UMaine Offseason...Belly Up to the Barr Boys

Yeah Maine isn't going to accumulate a roster full of NHL draft picks for the reasons you mention. Barr realizes this and I think he can do what he has the intention of doing, bringing this program back into the conversation.

Wasn't that part of Hastings' model at MN State? I seem to recall when they were making Frozen Fours they did so without any NHL picks on their roster. It can be done.

Of course the huge schools have an advantage, and they always will. But you can never just project a tourney field full of giant schools and call it a day, there's always room for little guys. Look at the Final Four this year, its three teams who have never made it this far before, with one who may never make it here again (plus Connecticut, who I hope dosen't ruin everything). Even in football, noted powerhouse TCU made it all the way to the title game. Sure, they got waxed by a massive school, but the fact they even made it there, and took out UM along the way, no less, shows there's always room for the unexpected.

The key to success in collegiate athletics is a good head coaching hire, and above that a good and committed athletic department/university president who is willing to do what it takes to win.

This is really the place to come for a pick-me-up.....yeesh. Step away from the ledge fellas.

Meanwhile athletic superpower Quinnipiac is in the Frozen 4.....must be pulling a Shawn Walsh down there in Hamden.

This was my point- that Maine isn't going to do it with the #1 NHL picks that some people want. It's going to be development. It's still doable, it just isn't going to be with plug and play talent like it was in the early 90's.

Now with the portal, stay focused on top end BCHL/NAHL players and build with them for a 4 year plan with each class. Grab USHL players that are serious about Maine. my point is if you bring in players that are getting better and better and give them the playing time they will be happy, and stay. This is the formula that St Cloud and Duluth use and they have done very well to compete with the big boys. Do not get wrapped up in the NHL #1 draft picks as they are one and out. That formula has only gotten Michigan to final 4's and their goal is national championship, however the players do not stay to accomplish that. I have seen players have career years their overage years in the BC and NA and when they come into college at 21 they are just peaking stay with them and they will keep getting better. Its pretty simple, now if your a top 10 school in the country every year then another approach can work for them.

How do you figure recruiting has improved? Barr has brought in 10 forwards and only one was a legitimate top six forward. The floor on the guys he has brought in other than the goalie has been decent enough but they really haven’t produced much. There are very few guys he has gotten to commit that show much potential and honestly the best recruits Maine has committed all have ties to the prior regime. It seems like this calendar year things have improved some but there is a long way to go.

Drew, we’ve gone back and forth on the “guys with ties to the previous regime” thing too much. At the end of the day, there are currently two guys coming in next year who committed under Red. On top of that, anyone choosing to still come is Barr’s guy, just as Byron, Brown and Renouf were Gendron guys.

In addition to that the entire defense, which was better than anything Gendron put together, was composed almost entirely of Barr committed guys. My post clearly said that Maine probably doesn’t have enough high end scorers committed but the average recruit has been better. There were a lot of D3 guys coming to Maine under the previous regime and that seems not to be the case under this staff. The high end scorers will come but putting a competent D1 team on the ice is a huge step in the right direction.

Yeah the Nadaeus are the most talented skaters this programs has since Gus or maybe Brian Flynn so I think recruiting has improved. For crying out loud.

I think in 17-18 Maine had a much better group of dmen but that is beside the point.

Barr has done fine with dmen, but that is only maybe 25% of the game. If you don’t have someone who can stop the puck and you can’t score you’re never going to win. The four freshman forwards Barr brought in last year scored five goals in 106 games, which isn’t anywhere close to good enough. I’m on record saying they pass the eye test but at that the end of the day you need the end product to be there.

I most definitely would not count Renouf, Brown, or Byron as Red’s recruits nor would I consider Pecararo even though he came in a year later. Red recruited plenty of decent players without trying to take credit for Timmy’s.

Actually it was 6 freshman forwards who produced 10 goals and dmen who added another 10.

2 of those forwards are most likely walks on in Carney and Lindauer. No expectations for them and by the end of the year they were on the 4th line. Carney worked hard and was a nice surprise on the 4th line playing a simple game. But that’s what those guys are.

Freel I had no expectations for and he was skating on the first line by the end of the year and had 15 points.

I was hoping one other freshman would pop and contribute. Trudeau like Ben said really struggled to adjust to the college game. It was noticeable as he looked behind the play most of the year. KKO seems to have some skill but I think 1) he was hurt a lot of the year 2) his skating needs work. Pabich is a very good skater and you can tell he is working is @$$ off.

But they are freshman and Ben’s first freshman class he put on the ice whom he recruited his first year besides Trudeau. College hockey typically takes 2+ years to build legit classes and Ben put those 6 + Antonacci, Holt, Arnott, and Chabrier together on the fly. The one guy he kept from Red was Kincaid who the other 4 skates circles around and is now in the portal.

And defense is more than 25% of hockey but it’s definitely not everything. But those 4 guys move the puck better and skate better than any dmen I have seen at Maine in a long time. And this is leaving out Breazelle who Ben got on the fly the summer he was hired and he has been a stud on the back end and is another tremendous skater.

Red’s 17-18 roster was by far his best (rest in peace). But that was year 5 and they went 18-16-4. Yes they were headed to the NCAA in 20 before shutdown but that was Swayman carrying that team. All that to say that Red even when he had all his guys after 5 years it still wasn’t good enough.

Ben had these guys playing harder than any Maine team in probably 20 years. Their skating was better, they broke the puck out better than they have in forever, and Ostman took a massive step forward. The Alfond was louder than it has been in a long time. We saw major progress this year and ripping 1 freshman class after their freshman year is premature. Ben’s track record speaks for itself and it’s not always about getting the firs

Also this notion that Ben’s recruiting is disappointing is premature as well.

Unlike Tim, Red had some good future commits lined up when Ben took over (Tim had Pecararo, Cloonan, Roberto, Romeo and that was about it). Josh Nadeau (aka Jake Pappalardo), Pichette, Lambert, and Trudeau are all good gets. I was hopeful for Kincaid but I am plenty happy with the other 4 freshman d. Ryan Remick is the only other guy I think that is a leftover. He is projecting as an overage walk on at this point (he did attend wild d-camp fwiw).

Bradly Nadeau was not committed and that’s Ben’s guy. Yes Josh was already and I am sure Bradly was a lay up pitch but I am not going to fault Ben for that. Red got Ben Poisson but couldn’t get Nick his younger brother who is better. If Ben doesn’t get credit for Brad then Red gets faulted for not grabbing Nick who was on the same junior team.

Ben has been able to identify what is leftover that is worth salvaging both on the roster and in the commitment list. For the guys he kept almost all of them have improved tremendously since his first game last year.

As for what’s coming? We don’t know until we see them. So we are all speculating. But the overall depth and quality of commitments is so much better than it has been in a while. Red’s first two classes were for the most part not great and it wasn’t until his third that there was any traction.

Shea and Berzins (goalies) have both been praised by Mark Divver who I would listen to over anyone.

Dave Starman compared Calafiore to Joey Diamond (both Long Island boys-hopefully more discipline comes with Calafiore) but I will take that comparison all day long. Joey was a spark plug.

Hopkins is Ben’s guy and from what I can see is going to make some noise all over the ice.

I haven’t seen Nobes play but from what I read he’s a great skater so that fits Ben’s mold. Lesakowski is a big body but I don’t know a ton beyond that. But 6’5 playing in the USHL sounds like a nice addition.

I think worrying about future classes is just too soon to do because when these guys commit it’s what they project to be in 2-3 years. Like it has been said 1000 times, we aren’t getting droves or USNDPT guys or future first and second rounders.

And then for guys beyond that…Nick Peluso has started to pop in BC and looks to have serious skill and ability to shoot the puck (something Maine needs badly).

Guys like him and Scholle and Cisar are a couple years out. Cisar is a 17 year old with 14 points in the USHL. Brady Arneson and Leo Eperjesi are also both 17 years olds plying for Chicago who is probably the best non-major junior program in NA (Chicago and Penticton are 1A and 1B). And they are loaded again this year.

Jaden Johnson and Kason Muscutt are 17 year olds playing in a league of 20 year olds in the NAHL.

Gilmour, Bosland, and Wellenreiter look promising but they are even further out.

My point is we don’t know exactly what these guys will be so saying recruiting is disappointing is just leaping way too quickly. I trust Ben and his track record for not only recruiting but coaching as well.

Maine’s biggest issue this year was putting the puck in the net and creating offense. Ask me in another year how this class, the incoming class, and the future recruits look because it is way too early at this point to be pessimistic. Ben’s the guy and he deserves and needs our support.

It's too late in the day for me to be interested enough to read all the below, but it's nice to see the fan base so engaged.

Red was a lousy recruiter. Very lousy, actually, with a couple of notable exceptions. (OK, maybe just Swayman.) And, BTW, Byron was a Whitehead guy, and if this current iteration had 4-5 of guys with that level of talent, we'd be singing a different tune right now.

Gendron's tenure was an utter, decade-long disaster, and Barr was dealt a weak hand... Yet, I'm still a bit hopeful.

The first thing that Maine needs is a better than average goalie. Ostman isn't going to keep them in close games on a regular basis. He just isn't that guy. Start there.

Sorry to be so long winded!

I have been reading this forum for 15 years and never posted. But Drew’s comments were driving me insane.

We are lucky to have Ben running the program. Excited for the future. Cheers!

You’re not the only person I’ve driven insane!

Here is what I see. Next year I think Maine finishes around the same as last year. I can see Maine scoring 5-10 more goals and conceding 5-10 more goals. Folks might not want to admit it but a lot this year’s success, especially in league games, came down to Ostman and Breen. This isn’t a slight on them but it’s hard for me to see them replicating that same form next season. I think/hope B. Nadeau will be good enough to help offset that.

The year after Maine hopefully won’t lose a lot but not sure they bring in much either. Hopefully Peluso, Raftery, or Coccomiglio really blow up but time will tell.

The season after, 25-26, is when I worry things could really go off the rails. It’s easy for me to see B.Nadeau leaving if he has success and that would be on top of Breen, Houle, Renwick, Brezeale, and Ostman. Maybe Trudeau and Freel develop nicely. Maybe J.Nadeau is Adam Dawe and not Josh Pappalardo(it’s a very fine line at that size.) Maybe Pichette or Lambert turns into S.Swavely. Hopefully other recruits fill the void as well but just between Breen, Renwick, and Houle you’re talking 40 goals last season. It’s not going to be easy.

Speculation on guys you haven’t seen play is a waste of time. I’ll pass judgement once they are in Orono for awhile. Paul Kariya ain’t walking thru that door. I think AMC has it right, Barr has to develop a team so it takes some time. My eyes say he has them moving forward.

Coming up through the Burnaby Winter Club system, the North Vancouverite embarked to the BC Hockey League, where he spent two seasons in Penticton. Playing for the team during their Panthers days, Kariya posted 112 points in his freshman season and won most sportsmanlike player, most valuable player, and rookie of the year.

Kariya followed up his impressive rookie campaign with an even stellar sophomore season. After posting 132 points in just 41 games, Kariya saw the accolades continue. He won most sportsmanlike player and most valuable player once again and was named Canadian Junior A Hockey League player of the year.

Bradley Nadeau posted 113 points this season....he and his brother Josh have both been nominated for BCHL MVP.

I see the comment about the freshman on the 4th and that is all they will be.. disagree, Freshman will get better and better with experience and will and can move up the line up. Jason Polin at Western was slated the same way 4th line Freshman year with same talk that is all he will be. Actually 4th line Sophomore year and now Hobey Baker finalist.. The key is to keep your players all 4 years

I agree especially for Maine with guys like KKO, Pabich, Trudeau-they will get better and better each year. I had no expectations for Freel, Carney, Lindauer coming into the year. Freel blew past those expectations and was a pest all over the ice all season. Carney was solid on the 4th line second half of the year and Lindauer started to see ice the last month. I just think it’s far too early to be pessimistic about the guys Ben is bringing in and has lined up.
