UMaine Hockey 23 - 24: The Barr Crawl to Glory!!!

Another one....2004 F Austin Peters....Chilliwack (BCHL)....joining Maine in the fall of 2025.

After James Taylor and James Bond, hold your hands up if you're disappointed this guy wasn't Austin Powers.

Maybe next year Barr will add Taylor Swift and John Wick to the growing list of UMaine celeb recruits??

And if Barr doesn't give bond the fabled 007 jersey, he's missing a trick. Pure NIL gold ...

I think it’s a tough league to project how players will do at the next level. One great player we had who came out of the MJHL was Brady Keeper.

Of all the folks on this thread, you have got to be the last person I ever figured to be a "dirty hippie" type.

In what world does a "James Taylor" end up not skating with UVM or UMass Amherst?!? Sheesh ...

I wuzza a cawledge hippie I suppose, but a clean one.

lol.

Here’s what’s out there on him.

https://chilliwackchiefs.net/chiefs-...023-24-season/

He also had a few YouTube interviews that for some reason wont link at the moment.

I’m not sure how strong the Manitoba junior hockey league is but he had 20G & 42A in 52 games.

The MJHL hasn't been a big feeder for NHL quality talent over the years (Hamonic, Zajac, Whitecloud & Keeper are probably the most recognizable names) so not sure what level of impact he'll make when he gets here.

That said, Peters did make some good progress after only scoring 19 points the season prior. Finished in the top 10 in league scoring last year so it certainly looks like he's a player whose game is improving.

Pro Hockey Trade Rumors had a short article on Duda and that the NCAA taking a second look at Dudas request to play @Maine...they stated that he had played in 3 leagues that are considered to be pro leagues in Russia..article said he could go back to the USHL route...and that the Arizona Coyotes do not want him to go back to Russia to play...stay tune...the saga continues.

Biggest thing I noticed from the scrimmage was a top PP unit using four forwards:

B. Nadeau | L. Breen | T. Freel
B. Holt | J. Nadeau

Other units they played were the standard 3x2 setup.

C. Hanson | H. Scott | N. Niemo/F. Trudeau
L. Antonacci | R. Hopkins

B. Poisson | N. Renwick | D. Houle
G. Arnott | D. Breazeale

Will be nice to have 2 pp scoring units.

My thoughts from yesterday..

1. Great to be back in the Alfond and to have hockey back. The scoreboard and ribbon under the student section are tremendous. Was not impressed with the audio still. It might have just been me but I don’t know if the audio will ever be good in the old barn.

2. Josh and Brad Nadeau are legit talents and belong on the top line. Josh though only 5’8 works hard and fights for pucks. Brad is just so gifted and will be a treat to watch.

3. Breen continues to be such a work horse all over the ice. Love the way he competes. Gonna be fun watching him with 20 and 82.

4. Hopkins is also as advertised. Good size skill and speed. Not sure why he hasn’t been drafted. He stood out big time.

5. Harrison Scott was one of two pleasant surprises for me. All over the ice making plays and working hard. Think Scott Niemo Freel is your third line to start the year.

6. Bodie Nobes was the other pleasant surprise. Competed, made plays, threw his weight around. Maine’s defense without Duda is already very good.

7. Arnott was breaking up plays all over the d zone. Him and Breazelle will be a great shutdown pair that can skate and move the puck.

8. Tommy Freel is just all over the place and all around the puck. Competes so hard. He did shank two breakaways tho.

9. Hard to get a gauge on goaltending because they were rotating so much.

10. Think Califiore is going to be contributing by the end of the year. Think Scholle can too but didn’t see a ton from him though he won some faceoffs.

11. Trudeau continues to just not be a factor on the ice. You can see his skill when he has loads of time and space. Yes it was just an inter squad scrimmage but I’m worried about him not progressing. Hope I’m wrong.

12. Team continues to work extremely hard, skating continues to get worlds better, and you can tell Barr is preaching details/play without the puck.

13. Major concerns will be someone pushing Ostman and what happens when he is hurt or struggles. Other is still scoring which I am worried about the first half of the season with another tough schedule to start.

How I see lines to start..

1. B. Nadeau Breen J. Nadeau
2. Poisson Renwick Houle
3. Freel Scott Niemo
4. Pabich Hanson Califiore

1. Breazelle Arnott
2. Holt Antonacci
3. Chabrier Hopkins
Nobes extra skater.

But we will see! Things can change until the UNH scrimmage.

Thanks for your take on what you saw yesterday and what you think as in the roster to date...one thing for sure is for this season to be good is goaltending, that for any team is big and the key to success. Would be nice for Ostman to continue to be steady and solid...but would be and now a days the backup goaltender also has to be ready and able in case of slumps or injuries. I myself figure the D will be a plus.

I think your observations on Trudeau are spot on and I noticed he isn't in your starting lineup! I think this year will be similar to last year for him in terms of point production. Except the team is much more talented and he's going to have less opportunities. I really really hope he proves me wrong and comes out and puts up a 25 point season. But I think if we see another 8 point season out of him he's playing somewhere else in 2024.
