UMaine Hockey 23 - 24: The Barr Crawl to Glory!!!

From Larry Mahoney @ BDN:

"The University of Maine is awaiting word from the NCAA on the eligibility of one of the most prominent players that joined the team this offseason.
Russian defenseman Artyom Duda, a second round pick of the National Hockey League’s Arizona Coyotes in 2022 at the 36th overall pick, played for three teams in Russia last season.
UMaine head coach Ben Barr said the eligibility questions have nothing to do with academics.
While waiting for the NCAA’s decision, Duda is currently taking classes at UMaine and practicing with the team. Barr and members of UMaine’s compliance department are working with the NCAA on his case.
“We are doing everything we can as a school to help him realize his dream of playing college [hockey],” Barr said. “We owe it to him"..."

I mean how long does it take...the NCAA if it was football or basketball related would have acted in a timely fashion...but NCAA hockey is well on the back burner...I will stick with patience...but not counting on Duda this semester...

Isnt no news good news?

Curious to hear thoughts from anyone who went to the “public is invited” practice this evening. Skate with the Bears followed the practice.

Sounds like they're doing another Skate with the Bears event this Sunday at 11AM with player intros to show off the new video boards and sound system.

Would be cool if Barr brought back the old Blue & White scrimmages like they used to have. Anyone recall the last time they did them? Must have been like 2009 or 2010.

Had the afternoon free yesterday and took in practice. Line combos I took note of during drills:

B. Nadeau | L. Breen | J. Nadeau (this has been consistent at all three I've been to so feels like a lock as the top line)
A. Calafiore | N. Renwick | P. Lindauer
R. Pabich | C. Hanson | F. Trudeau
N. Niemo | H. Scott | T. Freel
D. Houle | C. Hanson | B. Poisson
R. Pabich | P. Lindauer | F. Trudeau
S. Scholle | L. Breen | A. Carney

D. Breazeale | G. Arnott (They played together a bunch last year and Barr seems to like them together)
L. Antonacci | B. Holt (Another pairing that has been pretty consistently together at all three practices I've seen)
R. Hopkins | B. Chabrier (This duo looked good together. Chabrier looked much more comfortable jumping into the play than I recall from last year)
B. Nobes | L. Lesakowski

Duda didn't practice on the ice, he was doing bike cardio on the concourse.

Thought Boija looked solid. Showed some nice lateral movement on cross-crease one timers during a 4x2 drill they were doing. Really fast glove hand.

Ho does Lesakowski look? Can he skate well for a big guy? Hands?

Skates well for a bigger guy but not so sure what to make of his offensive game at this point. Had a couple shots/passes yesterday that he outright whiffed on.

This blueline will need the size and physicality because we have some smaller dmen, but hopefully the offensive game grows more or he'll be a scratch quite a bit this year.

Thanks for the scouting report...on Boija, wondering if the Nadeau's and Breen stick together and click...if by any chance they with their New Brunswick connection they have some name for that line...!!

From Larry's article published today.

The team had its first scrimmage on Wednesday and Barr and Breen feel the team looks good.

“The guys had good energy. Our team speed has improved, which is good. But it’s also about details and all the younger guys have to make sure they are playing the right way away from the puck. But when we have the puck, we can get up the ice quicker with it than we have the last two years,” Barr said.

“We definitely have more speed and we have a lot more talent than last year,” Breen said. “We’ve taken a huge step in that department. We will definitely be making a lot more plays this year which is nice.”

Year 3 is generally the year where the big leap happens, and I have all the confidence it will be the same here.

Looks like a great get on paper. I hear he sings well too.

Of all the folks on this thread, you have got to be the last person I ever figured to be a "dirty hippie" type.

In what world does a "James Taylor" end up not skating with UVM or UMass Amherst?!? Sheesh ...
