UMaine Hockey 23 - 24: The Barr Crawl to Glory!!!

Once you ditch your football program....it ain't ever coming back. There is a lot of upheaval right now across the collegiate landscape and no one knows at this point what FCS football will look like in a few years.

I figure that Maine (and all other FCS programs) are now essentially feeder schools for middle-of-the-road FBS schools. The Portal and the NIL thing has rendered FCS a minor league system... (And, FWIW, middle-of-the-road FBS schools are just feeders for Big 5 schools.) I don't like it, but I suppose that it's fair. The rich get richer in any free market.

I used to hate the notion of dropping FB, but maybe it makes sense now. except that the money Maine saves can't be plowed back into hockey unless Maine is willing to take a severe beating in every other program.

Ain't "amateur" athletics grand?

Why can't it be plowed back into hockey. From what I heard, hockey is the only program that doesn't lose money.

That used to be true, not sure if its still true. Attendance was way off for years. This year it appears attendance will be back to what used to be normal

Big 70-59 win on the road for Maine men's basketball over South Florida tonight!

Hey, shout out to you for mentioning that on here. I actually watched it too.

Gotta love ESPN+/Watch ESPN or whatever that is. WAAAAAY more Maine sports to be seen there than were ever available before in a National sense.

Basketball is definitely improving. I've only missed one game so far. I think the new-ish coach is the real deal. (I'm so f***ing old that I remember when hoops was the flagship program there- as in Rufus Harris and Rick Carlisle making waves...) And Skip Chapelle used to pick me up for 7AM classes on Stillwater Ave. when I had my thumb up, heading to campus from Old Town. Great guy.

OK, sorry. If the TG food-coma didn't finish you off, the above probably did. Sleep off the tryptophan, my brothers, and GO BLUE.

Attendance is up, some sell-outs to mostly filled...which is a good sign the fans are believing that Barr has the program going in the right direction...years and years ago the hockey program did make money...but the end of the Whitehead era into Gendrons(r.i.p.)tenure the program took a nose dive in play and in turn soured the fan faithful....we were very much spoiled by such a winning program that it was almost expected every year and once it went off the rails the fan support did also. But times look a whole lot better with the Coaching of Barr and talent coming in.....winning again is the recipe.

UNH looks to be tough opponent next Friday, I imagine Alfond will be rocking. Hope its warm out so the students waiting in line won't have to drink all their nip bottles of fireball : )

Maine up to #4 in the PWR again without even playing a game.....that's what a couple of wins vs. top teams will do for you.....those Ws are the gift that keeps on giving.

Well I figure if anyone knew it would be out for all to see...BUT, does anyone think that Maine and Duda will know before the end of December... if he plays meaningful games or continues to practice and more or less in limbo....

I can’t believe he is still in Orono. Not playing isn’t helping his future earnings

This is on the NCAA, this should have been figured out in October when the season began...but in the way the Berzins situation was handled....nothing surprises me with how the NCAA conducts themselves...with Duda being a 2nd rd. pick you would think that Arizona must have a plan in place..(?)...but the way it is dragging out I really don't expect anything till the New Year..(again?).

We can giggle and wink about the educational load to be taken on by a star recruit hockey player, but when he's coming from a totally different culture to one that will likely define at least the early stages of a burgeoning professional career, having a few weeks/months off from hockey to adapt to a new country with a new language, etc. is a great opportunity to settle in before the hockey piece is introduced. The road to success for many a Russian/other European prospect is riddled with examples of kids who did not get a chance to adjust, found themselves sidetracked with other "coping mechanisms", and were left strewn by the wayside. And as Drew points out, as a military age kid, already enlisted in military backed Russian hockey programs, being Stateside at this point in his young life isn't exactly a bad outcome, considering potential alternatives ...

I wish you were a Maine fan.

I haven't been up for any practices since before the season started but do we at least know if he is able to practice with the team still?

Would hope that if he's not getting game reps that he's at least able to stay in game shape. Plus, it's probably good for the rest of the team to get practice reps against a skilled draft pick like him.

I have only seen him practicing by himself when team was on the road...
