UMaine Hockey 23 - 24: The Barr Crawl to Glory!!!

Ostman is a #1 goalie....you have to take in a game sometime....live....all goaltenders have bumps in the road during the season, and Ostman is no different...not a Swayman or a Howard.....on a different note how'd Maine football season go this year and last...no more chatter that, that program has a legit chance at a Nat. Title anymore...

Brilliant of you to reference football, as if that had the first thing to do with with Ostman... Makes no sense to conflate the two, but you were likely in a hurry to get to some rally.

Ostman has had some good statistical stretches, but he usually fails the eye-test. I've only seen about 300 Maine games, but I stand by my assessment. And a soft goal is a soft goal, even if seen on TV with a thousand other angles available. ;-)

If I'm Barr, I'd give Boo-ya the next start. He's quick, anyway. No way in the world that VO is a FF goalie, IMO.

No...no rally 4 me/ever...just over the years you have said that FB was going to be quicker to a Nat. Title, as far as Ostman...he is the #1 @present...and if and when Barr decides to play Boija I see no problem with it...matter a fact if he can do the job or they(#32 &30) can form a tandem it only makes Maine better...as far as making the FF, whoever is in net would be special...but don't pack your bags for that this coming April...oh and a opinion is a just that a opinion...and I always look forward to yours....

But Ostman is a back-up goalie, plain and simple.

Based on what I've seen, having seen 3 of the past 4 Maine games, this is a bad take. But let's see where this discussion is in a few months. He was tremendous vs BC but I've seen third stringers have good nights here and there against BC (paging Vinny Monaco).

When football had one of the best young coaches in the country, they were closer to a natty than the hockey team.

Now mens hockey has one of the best young coaches in the country. So its flipped.

see how that works?

Your right that Maine had one of the top Coaches...but that is UM problem in that any top upcoming Coach will never stay @Maine...3 years tops...while in hockey there is a better chance of keeping a top Coach...but who knows down the line in hockey either...everything now changes in a instant.

I will say, though:

1. Football may have made the semis, but there was a mountain between them and Eastern Washington and North Dakota State. Maine wouldn't have beat either in 1,000 tries.
2. Hockey wins (or would win) national titles competing against BC, Michigan, Notre Dame, etc. Schools play FCS football because they couldn't compete at the highest level.

Also, the FCS playoffs get you trips to Ogden, Utah and Cheyney, Washington on five days' notice if you actually want to follow the team. Good luck.

This has been epsiode 4,949 in my 3,404,492 part series "FCS football is a waste of time and money and Maine should drop the sport."

"Generous"? They've played #1, 2 & 3 in the PWR and went 2-3-1 against them with 4 of those 6 on the road.

Perhaps I should have specified, generous relative to what I was expecting. I thought they'd fall into the 13-15 range in the poll.

For anyone interested there have been some older full Maine games uploaded to YouTube. Nice to see some of these old games make their way on here since I was too young at that time to remember.

One of them shows Jack Parker losing his mind and trying to get into the crowd and throwing water bottles. Also nice to see some pre-expansion Alfond Arena as well (they touch on the expansion plans in the 2nd intermission of this game).

I've wanted to get my hands on some old game tapes now that I have a VCR to USB converter and start uploading some myself. If anyone has any they want converted send those tapes my way.

Thanks for uploading...great stuff!

After watching the BU series from this past weekend...I think it's time to sit a few guys and let them earn their way back into the lineup. BU is a much bigger team and we need insert someone like Carney into the 4th line as he is big and from what I remember from last year he doesn't get pushed around too much. I thought he came on at the end of last year when he was able to crack the lineup.

Not sure who uploaded it but it wasn’t me. Was happy to come across it in my YT feed though.

Hope to see more older games pop up as well.

Maine would have to add at least one men's sport and drop at least one women's sport to be Title IX compliant scholarship-wise to make this work.

LOL, I totally understand your take here, as despite numerous trips to the FCS playoffs during the Coach MacDonnell era here at UNH, you just never saw the UNH program having a chance against the perennial FCS powers. In some ways, they're even more entrenched than the small handful of teams atop the FBS pyramid. Those programs actually have to fend off more serious challengers, every year. FCS powers seem to enjoy their little niche, and have decided they prefer the "big fish in the little pond" experience to the opposite, even if the fame and riches are far more modest. I'd never advocate for cutting UNH (or UMaine) Football, but it sure does temper your expectations ...

Once you ditch your football program....it ain't ever coming back. There is a lot of upheaval right now across the collegiate landscape and no one knows at this point what FCS football will look like in a few years.
