UMaine Hockey 23 - 24: The Barr Crawl to Glory!!!

I was at the game and your description is accurate. UMass carried play much of the third period and were not rewarded. Maine had problems getting the puck out of their defensive zone and were out shot 16-4 in the third period. I'm not discrediting Maine in getting the win as they played excellent defense in front of Boija.

Crowd was awesome this weekend....Alfond is back with a vengeance. Has anyone else noticed the sea Maine jerseys, sweatshirts, etc in the stands? Bear Necessities must be making a fortune this season. I bought some stuff last night and the place was packed with people and long lines at the registers.

Ticket office just announced that game is sold out with the possibility of tix becoming available 2 hours before game time if UNH returns any of their allotted amount.

I don't disagree. I just think disqualifying candidates because "they have the best players" is not a good faith argument and it's a low-IQ/biased take. I think it has to be Barr or Brown - I don't see a compelling argument for Pandolfo over Brown to be honest. All that being said, sure Brown had a ton of talent but it was also the youngest team in the country, a 17-point differential over 3rd place Maine and a +74 goal differential (Maine +25 for reference to show how dominating BC was). But anyway, Brown is disqualified obviously.

Sure you should dominate if you have the talent BC and BU has, but both did (Pandolfo was on BC's heels in the standings the whole way and +69).

If they have the most talent its because the coach got them to come. Its more than Xs and Os on Friday and Saturday night.

BC and BU should definitely sweep every award and both 1st and 2nd teams.....they deserve it! UNH goaltender might make 1st team though.

In addition to the coach, I would also add that the reputation of the school is a big factor in attracting talent. Both BC and BU being private schools are held in very high regard academically.

But that being held in high regard academically should not preclude schools from sweeping awards....right Scarpy?

Yes in a normal world but HE HQ is in Mass outside of Boston, that speaks volumes in itself.

I think it's been moved to Amesbury in recent years, which is probably equidistant from UNH and Merrimack.

No doubt to accommodate Steve "Nigel" Metcalf and his better half, who is an assistant AD at MC IIRC??

Thankfully, the days of Commish Joey Buttons on Lake Q have come to an end, with Parker on speed dial etc.

So BC and BU coaches are disqualified in perpetuity from COTY because of projection of professional success via draft status?

Yup. You just can't have everything, Carmine. Maybe they can invent a "Recruiter of the Year" award for the guys who network the best with the advisors to line up the most top draft picks then? Barr as COTY this year is a no-brainer.

Predictions on HE awards? I'm thinking Nadeau Bros on All-Rookie although one may be squeezed out by BC/BU wunderkinds. Barr has to be COTY...right?

This year the rookies are dominating the scoring. There are four rookie forwards who have more points than the Nadeaus. So they might get 2nd team hockey east and not on the all rookie team.

The best way to kick-start the old UNH-UMaine rivalry into life again is for UNH to come up there next Saturday with a must-win agenda, and earn a trip to Boston with an upset win. No question, UNH should come into the game more motivated than UMaine, which can survive a QF loss and still make the big tourney. UNH is playing with literally everything on the line, and some unexpected belief after the "White Out" weekend.

If UNH can play a disciplined physical game against UMaine next weekend, the home ice thing may be neutralized.

It's the ultimate test for MS7 and his worthiness (or not) for an extension IMO.

Same old UNH - either loses to Lowell on Wednesday, or wins and then gets trucked by UMaine on Saturday

Different UNH - physically dominates Lowell again, doesn't wilt in Orono, and escapes with a narrow upset win

Should be fun ... too bad only one of our teams can make it to Boston this year, it was always best when both went!!

Goal diff was using overall numbers... league-only numbers. BC +49, BU +51, Maine +9.

Chuck, you are smoking something if you think Maine will be less motivated. Maine will be very motivated to set the record straight after getting swept at UNH. And they will be able to do something no Maine team has done in 12 years, get back to the Garden. The Alfond will be roaring. Any thoughts otherwise is wishful thinking on your part.

Chuck dont smoke...using my best language. He's a conservative. :-)

Maybe he ought to then, come up for the game go home after a stop at one of the recreation stores.

Chuck Murray I think that even though UNH waxed Lowell that is the brilliance of one game playoffs. For example, Maine Beat Vermont last year 3-1 and 5-1 at the Gutt and we all thought they would steamroll Vermont in the 6 vs 11 matchup at Alfond..and we lost. Vermont was 11-20, and had gone 1-4 in their last 5 games and was primed for a whipping and STILL won last year..oh their only win was at UNH lol..

With that said Maine will be motivated. I imagine they want UNH. That series at the Whitt pissed them off and the arena will be full..would be a hell of a game but let's get there first
