Re: UMaine - 2011-2012 Season Thread (cont) - Beating Back the Internuts ?

Honestly, while I'm rooting for either of Maine's nominees, I might go with the kid from Colgate. Passing is hugely important, but the fact remains that assists are an imperfect indicator. The inflation of assist 'scoring' means there's basically 2 assists for each goal, unless it's really, really impossible to justify a 2nd. Goals matter more. If there were someone close to him, than I might get into the whole ECAC angle . . . but there's nobody close to him.

Have the seen the kid a few times this year, and I agree that he's a special player, and probably NHL-bound. I also agree that official-scorers hand out assists like candy... But I'm willing to get into the whole ECAC-angle.

I see a bunch of ECAC live/TV games out here in Bumf^(k, NY. That league is not awful by any means, but it's clearly a tier beneath the big three, especially this year. I don't believe Smith would have the numbers to be a Hobey candidate if he played a WCHA/HEA/CCHA schedule.

Just MO.

I'm nowhere near a PWR expert, but while we are rooting for UMA and PC this weekend, it appears to me that we should concurrently be sending vigorous hate-vibes to Miami and Union as well... I don't see any other (realistically) flippable comparisons to the North of Maine right now.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong about that, please... But it's looking like the Bears will indeed have to run the table until at least getting a berth in The Garden if they are to feel confident about their PW chances, barring a perfect storm to their South.

sometimes you do not have to flip a direct comparison.
If Maine has 22 comparisons and Lowell has 23. Maine can move ahead of lowell if Maine stays at 22 and Lowell keeps their comparison against maine and loses 2 other comparisons (2 head to head losses this weekend, maybe)... (not that Maine-Lowell is a good example)

We've seen many lineups during this year....some effective, some not so. What is our best lineup, forwards and d pairings?

Sullivan between the pipes
O'Neil - Cornell, Nemec- Hegerty,O'Connor- Pryor/Rutt with mu vote going to Rutt Pryor is a defensive liability and at playoff time you need to control goals
Abbott-Flynn-Diamond
Anthoine- Hiigins -Mangene
Shemansky-beattie-Ceratani/Parker
Anderson-Liedermark-Parker/Ceratani

Situations will dictate who palye when, so after the first line, all bets are off...

I'd put Swavely for sure and probably Leen as well in over Andersson and Liedermark. Sure Andersson and Leidermark are great on the PK and are senior role players but Swavely and Leen have more upside in my opinion.

Have been a fan of Cerretani, but after the games at NU I liked the Sat. lineup. Easy when it is a 7-1 win but Swavely proved his value with work ethic on Abbott's goal in 2nd period as he took puck down low in offensive zone and every player on the ice changed while he battled and eventually led to a goal that he did not assist on. Anderrson has played much better since he sat and Liedermark is out on the ice winning face offs at critical times. Like to think all 4 lines can score but winning face offs in close games is key. Leen could end up being a key player but his +/- is not good this year and as a result I doubt we see him again if everyone is healthy.

(Yeah, I agree with that one... I don't see UML getting swept by PC.)

I was in fact looking at direct comparisons, and there aren't many in Maine's neighborhood that they can hang their hat on, as far as I can divine. It's looking like they have very few chances to move up, and a couple of teams within a hair of overtaking them from behind.

The more I scrutinize the PW, the less I like it. You have the ridiculously arbitrary double-cliff TUC, and then you have a faulty way of measuring H2H, where winning two of three vs. a given team accrues you two points in stead of the logical one..? Guess it beats the smoke-filled room, but it's a badly-weighted system.

Maine has three guaranteed contests remaining, and they should be approached as playoff games. If they win all three, I'm pretty confident that they get a bid, even if they're sited in beautiful Green Bay... (Order the butter-burgers there; it's a noble way to die.)

Just glanced at the HE standings and realized that this team could/should be sitting in first right now if they had won 3 very winnable games against 3 very winnable opponents in the last 3 weeks. These guys need to bring that sense of urgency every game, every period, every shift. They shouldn't be on the bubble right now in danger of their season ending in a week. It'll be interesting to see which team shows up; the finesse, pretty boy team, or the gritty, blue collar team? Are they going to bring it this Sat, or let UNH outwork, out compete and play grittier in their house?

In your H2H example, winning two of three from a team NETS you 1 point (the other team is given a point for their win).
But I have no idea what that all means. Just sayin'. ;) :)

This has been the problem with a Timmay coached team since he has been here. Sometimes they're great, sometimes they're awful. Who knows week to week what you are going to get. Doing the what if game will drive you crazy:) All winnable games and didn't show up to 2 of them

Maine fans can breathe a little easier.

ORONO — Steve Abbott, the athletic director at the University of Maine who was a 2010 Republican gubernatorial candidate, announced today that he will not run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Republican Olympia Snowe.

Abbott said many people have encouraged him to run, but he cannot leave the job to which he was appointed a year ago for a two-year commitment.

"Over the last three days, I have received many phone calls, emails, and Facebook messages from friends and supporters encouraging me to run for the United States Senate," Abbott said in a news release.

"My current job commitments at the University of Maine are something that I take very seriously and something that I truly enjoy," Abbott said. "It would be irresponsible of me to leave just as we are launching so many great projects for our athletic department."

Sounds like he'll run in 2014 if Collins steps down.

Re: UMaine - 2011-2012 Season Thread (cont) - Beating Back the Internuts ?

So, who are we supposed to root for, again?

UMass and PC?
Ideally, UMA wins tonight, loses tomorrow, finishes #9 in HEA and misses the playoffs. That guarantees that they would be a TUC. It also means a Maine win over UHN gets home ice.

Providence would have to sweep to give Maine a chance to pass Lowell.

Oh Lordy - Anybody listening to the UMass - Mack game? The play by play guy sounds autistic. I always knew Hanagan was good, but these two guys are frighteningly bad. The good news? UMass up 1-0.

Re: UMaine - 2011-2012 Season Thread (cont) - Beating Back the Internuts ?

i've heard worse, but yes Hanagan is much much better
