UMaine - 2011-2012 Season Thread (cont) - Beating Back the Internuts ?

irishfan, BC was good under Coughlin and post gambling scandal under TOB/Jags (for over 10 years). Will they have a winning record every year? Obviously not. But 8-4 or 9-3 is "good". It's all about the coach. The right guy can win at BC (before going elsewhere). It's all about who you bring in next.

As for TOB, he brought the program as far as he could. He couldn't take the next step and get to an ACC title game.

It all depends on your definition of good. I probably should have said great. BC will never be consistently great in football. Hockey is the only sport BC has the ability to be consistently great in out of the major sports.

And that's the only one that the Athletic Director is actively trying to kill. Cake and ice cream all around!

Why do you say that? Attendance seems to be at all-time high for BC. I mean I've seen close to capacity attendance even against Merrimack. The hoops team is begging people to attend games against ACC opponents.

The AD doesn't know the first thing about hockey. He suggested hockey should be 2 30 minute periods for TV sake.

He's successfully destroyed the football program though

Abbott's biggest strength is his quick release. He's made some good passes, but his best attribute is the quick shot.

Flynn is a much better all around player. Several teams are following him closely.

I think the big difference is Abbott would have to be a top 6 forward in the NHL. Flynn could be top 9 (maybe 12), with the way the league is heading (more skill guys, less "tough" guys). I am not so sure skill is the question with Abbott, but rather defensive coverage/speed. I can see him having a tough time keeping up at the next level.

The move to center has certainly improved Flynn's all around game and I think has helped his stock rise among scouts. I would think he is quietly getting more attention from the NHL, where Abbotts great season may win him more individual awards (yes, even maybe Hobey).

Re: UMaine - 2011-2012 Season Thread (cont) - Beating Back the Internuts ?

Nick, I don't disagree with anything you said. BC's third line isn't the same as some HS team that only plays 6 forwards. Still, they list him 3rd. I think he's the best pro prospect in the league, I'd take him on any team I was rooting for in less than a minute. I shouldn't have said minutes, just "3rd line." But BC made the chart, I didnt make it up out of thin air. I'm going off their info.

Point is, pro doesn't mean jack for the Hobey or for college hockey awards. How Abbott does in the AHL means nothing. Brandon Yip is a better pro than Chris Higgins and Jason (Joey, Whoa) Lawrence and those 2 meant more in college. Etc.

LOLed at Joey Lawrence.

BoSox, Kreider is a better, more well rounded forward/prospect than Abbott, but Abbott is more deserving of the Hobey. How's that?

Come on...if you would put a Dumoulion with Maine's d-men and had Kreider on the offensive side you would have a Letal Team...Dumoulin would shore up alot of the mistakes/toughness in the back-end and Kreider would just add more fuel to already potent Offence...but thats just dreaming of course,by that they are both excellant players with a Top Notch Coach/Program...not a BC fan but you can see it on the ice when they are playing....

The Hobey, like the Heisman, is an award based on collegiate excellence. It is not an award given to the best pro prospect.

I don't believe Flynn or Abbot are the best players on the 1st line

I don't think that's too much of a stretch. Diamond has raised his game big time. Worrying less about the stupid stuff and finishing. He was very highly regarded as a younger player. Diamond has a higher point per game average than Flynn, who's been in a slump of sorts lately.

That being said I disagree.

Has made some good passes, cmon. I think Abbott is a much more threat and a better forward where Flynn is better on D.

I'm surprised ppl talk about Spencers speed, he did beat Gus in the fun skills comp Maine ran, and Gus is quick. Abbott is sneaky fast because he is a different skater, he doesnt run real quick on the ice, he takes long deep strides.

If Abbott at the next level is put with players who see the ice as well as he does I think that will greatly improve his goals, a lot of times this season he is open and doesn't get the puck.

While several teams are following Flynn and he will have no problems getting a contract hes a stud, don't kid yourself if you don't think several are following Abbs as well.

I think the next level with some good coaching they will help close the D gap, althou I must say he has been playing better D and closing the +/- gap.

Flynn and Abbott are both much better, Diamond doesn't see the ice at all, hes good at checking and causing problems infront of the net. I will be shocked if he has the same goal output next year without playing with those 2.

5 0n 5, puck in the corner, which one of those guys makes his own space.?

What Irish said. I mean Wilson was a better prospect than Gilroy and who won the Hobey? My original point that got lost in the line chart stuff was that if the Hobey was about pro scouts, Kreider would win it hands down. It's not and yet because a few people think Abbott can't pass in the AHL all of a sudden he won't be in the Hat Trick, won't be an All-American, etc.

To Walrus' point, my top 3 for All Hockey East forward would be Abbott-Flynn-Kreider. Diamond is on a tear but they won't go 3 Mainers and I can't see him unseating either Abbott or Flynn, being seniors and character guys. Right or wrong, because the way Joey creates a shot with no space, forehand or backhand, is absolutely sick.

I love Joey, and think Spencer has really upped his game, has the best hands on the team bar none and possibly deserves the Hobey. But B. Flynn is the one who stirs the drink. He has done more to show his readiness at the next level than anyone. Moved to Center, playing more physical number 1 in +/- and also the Captain. ow can you not be impressed. Yeah he played with Gus and Tanner, but everyone thought his numbers would go down this year, instead quite the opposite! The kid is a leader and by staying he has really improved his chances of signing a better contract at the next level. He gets my Hobey vote if I had one!

I won't argue with that, I vote for Flynn on the Hobey page all the time. He actually knows where the other end of the ice and will hit guys. The 3 are different players, to each their own.

One other thing at the start of the season I had no clue that Maines first line would be as good as its become. I thought Gus was the one but I think its possible he hung around 1 year too long. There wasn't enough challenge to keep him interested?? or boredom maybe??

and thus will go down as one of maine's best pure goal scorers.

also... I remember when Ryan Duncan won the hobey and he wasn't even the second best player on his line
