UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

Yeah I guess that kind of made it his job to get in front of shots like that then, ouch.

I might have still moved. His dad would probably still have the puck embedded in his chest if Reed had had a composite stick of today.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

Thanks!

Yeah, dude was about 5 feet from me and we were about 10 feet from the net. Tried to blast it through me. Dumb. I certainly wouldn't do that.

I didn't realize how bad it was till the next shift when I jumped on the ice and went down when my ankle couldn't support me.

Actually took a slap shot in the ankle from Nick Oliver back in high school up in Roseau. Hurt like a mother, made me second guess blocking shots rest of my career!

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

Game talk - MN played really good team D last night and for the most part kept SCSU to the perimeter.
Key to MN winning tonight is staying out of the box, SCSU really has a nice PP and MN was fortunate to only give up one PP goal.

The Gophers played exceptional defense "for the most part". But looking at the first SCSU goal notice 4 Gophers standing in front of Wilcox basically flatfooted in addition to providing a partial screen for Benik. One of the Gophers (Marshall or Alt and they knew it) could have easily made an attempt to move in, drop and block the shot or at least cause Benik to think twice and hesitate. They didn't look desperate enough at that point and that's not going to cut it tonight when SCSU ramps up their play for the split.

On SCSU's second goal, Rau showed why he's probably the gutsiest player on the Gophers, especially considering his size, when he attempted a full face, body block on his knees in front of a hard windup by LeBlanc, who rifled a nice ka-ching off the pipe on his PP goal. But again the goal was assisted by a partial screen on Wilcox from Parenteau standing behind a kneeling Rau and it looked like Wilcox was frustrated and said something about it.

I like the fact that they're protecting the paint, but they've got to be more desperate with shot blocks and sacrifice the body tonight and watch the screens if they really want this sweep.

My dad took a Reed Larson slapshot to the chest that broke his sternum.

Sounds like the days when scarfaced Gump Worsley stared down 110mph Bobby Hull slapshots with no helmet or face protection and a chest protector made of thin deer hide.

Round #2: Gophers are 9-1-3 on Saturdays. Hope they can extend their streak of not being beaten on Saturdays to 10! Go Gophers!

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

SCSU is fast. They may be the fastest team I have watched Minnesota play this year. But as others have pointed out, they started to look gassed towards the end of the game, while the Gophers kept flying around. I would really like having Hanowski or LeBlanc on the Gophers. The Huskies are not going away without a huge fight tonight. I think they're going to score first, the crowd will start roaring, and Minnesota will have to find a way to stem the tide. Cannot be upset with a split, but Minnesota needs at least a tie tonight to keep their MacNaughton Cup hopes alive.

The Gophers are really deep this year which is why they probably will not be gassed tonight or the rest of the year. ;)

AND...also on the line tonight is the Gophers are currently riding an 8 AWAY game unbeaten streak, and have not lost an away game since Nov. 3rd. Rah!

Wow, I forgot all about that.

I think it was Alt on the first goal who should be taking that heat. Marshall made an attempt on the pass, and Alt just kind of stood behind him watching what was going on. Really, though, Boyd making an unforced turnover is what caused that one. Those just kill you in the defensive end. Everyone is moving to break out, and all of a sudden they have to get some sort of defensive shape immediately. Not good.
I thought Boyd really struggled through the first 30-40 minutes last night. Turned the puck over a lot.

I don't think Wilcox would have saved the 2nd one even if he saw it. But point taken on the screens.

Tonight's going to be intense. I'm anticipating a very tight defensive and low scoring game. 2-1, 3-2 type game. I'm guessing St. Cloud will up their effort in the defensive end. I think if MN can get into board battles and rely on guys like Budish, Ambroz, Boyd, Bjugstad, Serratore to grind things down low they will have a good chance tonight. That is an area where they really match up well with St. Cloud.

A tall order to win the weekend, but I won't be satisfied with the series if MN doesn't earn at least a point tonight.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

See, Minny? We can run goalies too. Coxie is gonna have a long night.

?
I didn't think there were any penalties on that play. Looked fine all the way around.

I agree. I think they raised thier arm and then realized it was not a penalty. They didn't want to look like an idiots so they called one both ways ... and looked like idiots.

That was a B.S. interference call at the end of the second period. Condon used body position of gain control of the puck. What a nice equilizer the refs handed out. Also one of those two Huskies should have been gone for the game.

Actually both were from behind into the boards. Five minute 5 on 3?
