Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

Drew Leblanc in the post game interview said we played "too nervous and tenative" and we had "nerves" too worried about making mistakes.
I thought the same thing about the pregame and some of the stuff we did offensively- playing grenades and getting rid of it instead of being patient and getting off a good pass. Same with pressure on the puck defensively.

I thought they looked hesitant instead of pressure on the puck, especially on the first penalty kill. I think it's time to play our game instead of trying to react to Minnesota's game, especially playing the top 2 lines too much so guys are fresh. The whole building had that feeling and I think it carried on to the players. We have to take it to them every shift and see where the marbles lay.

If they want to gain confidence and go on a high going late in the season this is where it all starts. It's all about attitude so give them all you've got. Go Huskies!!!

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

Really I wish I could find a video clip of Schmidt's goal. It screamed 'do what you want, you have no chance'. The play is total arrogance.

I thought we played the top two lines too much. It was evident in the 4 on 4. Both Jensen and Hano looked gassed and Schmidt was fresh. I would have rather had Milan's energy than Holka tonight. We shot a lot wide and high tonight and passed on a lot of good looks in the slot. I thought the second no goal was obvious, Rau obstructed Faragher and even pushed him back when Budish scored. Last I checked you can not obstruct the goalie in the crease.

Its not that the Gophers have two similar top lines...its that it really has two #1 lines. Possibly the two most gifted talents in hockey, Haula and Bjugstad, have top talent to support them. I can't remember a time when this was so true.

I thought the 4th line did fine tonight (Bertsch, Rehkamp and Holka cycled quite a bit in their end but didn't generate many quality chances off of it). The third line too (Thorson and Morley) except for Benik with no pressure D.

I was thinking just how strong the Gopher 3rd and 4th line played. I remember alot of sustained pressure from Boyd, Ambroz, Isackson, Holl, etc.

Its cliche to say that SCSU will pick up its game after a friday night loss...but this should be a good game. The Gophs have come close to abdication once in the second half against Mankato...that won't happen tonight.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

That's not arrogance, that's playing with confidence. The problem I had was they were so tired they basically watched him walk it in, no pressure on the puck. They should have had fresh legs out there. Wilcox stoning Prochno right away when the game started was big too.
When a guy winds up like that and takes all day it should be an easy stick tip out of play.

SCSU is fast. They may be the fastest team I have watched Minnesota play this year. But as others have pointed out, they started to look gassed towards the end of the game, while the Gophers kept flying around. I would really like having Hanowski or LeBlanc on the Gophers. The Huskies are not going away without a huge fight tonight. I think they're going to score first, the crowd will start roaring, and Minnesota will have to find a way to stem the tide. Cannot be upset with a split, but Minnesota needs at least a tie tonight to keep their MacNaughton Cup hopes alive.

That's the grenade stuff I was talking about on the breakout. They kept it in because our guys weren't being patient, just trying to throw it off the glass or the boards blind which is dumb hockey.

As far as medicating in the meantime, I'm on crutches right now, and no Koho, not from the nut hairs, from a hockey injury and I've got vikes for that. Your win tonight barely registered. I'm good. :)

Hockey injury? Someone take your legs out while coaching, or do you still strap em on? Been lucky to avoid any injuries that require serious medical attention so far. But I play with guys who are hand-picked to be clean players, and for the most part, will try to avoid situations that could result in something serious.

I believe SCSU can put in a better effort and be less tentative, but some of that dumping it out on the breakout was as much the result of how tenacious UM was on the forecheck for much of the game. There were several shifts where the Gophs just wouldn't allow the time or space for the Huskies to breakout of their zone, and SCSU would end up just dumping it to get a break from the pressure.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

If you watch Leblanc, or Jensen they are very effective at using their body to shield off pressure , they are calm and take that extra second to make sure they hit an open man. There is no reason to blindly throw stuff out of your own zone because it usually leads to trouble like that funny bounce off the glass seam that led to a quality chance.

I don't care if you are Sidney f..ing Crosby playing in a college game, if you have two players attacking you and the puck and passing lanes are also covered, you'll have to dump it up the boards sometimes. Bjugstad is as good as anyone at shielding the puck, but it doesn't mean he never loses it or is pressured into making a play that is rushed and isn't ideal.

Blindly firing it out of the zone because you don't take the time to look when you have it is one thing. Firing it out occasionally because you just need to relieve the pressure and regroup is another.

Took a slapper in the ankle while playing Tuesday night. Three fractures.

Not really what I'd call "painful," but annoyingly uncomfortable. I'm hating having to use crutches and wear the boot.

Been fortunate that this is my first fracture or break in nearly 35 years of playing. Have had other injuries of course, but nothing that required more than rest and rehab.

Out 4-6 including on-ice coaching. Hope everyone can get by without me.:p

Agreed. Getting a short clear is better than turning the puck over in your own zone.
