UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

Everyone should know that the SCSU Men's and Women's basketball teams are hosting Winona State Fri (Women at 6pm Men at 8pm) and Upper Iowa Sat (Women at 4pm Men at 6pm) this weekend at the same time as the hockey Gopher series (7:37 Fri and 7:07 pm Sat).

Parking will be at a premium. Especially around Halenbeck hall. I think a lot of people will be using the downtown shuttles.

I believe the women's hockey team is also hosting Wisconsin at 2:07 pm each day and an Alumni function (Van Nelson Open) track meet at noon to 2pm Sat. It should be a busy weekend down there. At least wrestling was scheduled Thurs eve.

The baseball and softball teams are also kicking off the season in Corpus Christi Texas and Las Vegas Nevada.

I am not sure who came up with the scheduling.

Blast from the past...
Classic photo from SCSU's 1987 NCAA trophy ceremony featuring Husky men's hockey coaches Craig Dahl, Herb Brooks and Bob Motzko. TRADITION!

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

I asked Roman about the 4 team Minnesota Tourney in 2014 and asked him to clarify if Mariucci was indeed the venue for 2014 as he stated in the Strib article. I told him I had heard it was at the X. Just received this email tonight from Roman:

Don't go too hard on him. ;)

Thanks for clearing that up Harley. Roman had quite a few people hyperventilating over his error. This should be a great tourney. Props to Lucia, Gaspirini, Motzko and Maturi for getting this thing going. From what I understand, the new athletic directors at both schools have been working hard to finalize things. Long overdue.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

This may sound like a sarcastic question, but it really isn't. What kind of expectations do you Husky fans have for your team this year? Conference champs? Frozen Four? NCAA title? I'm just curious and would like to know.

None of them are unattainable.
These guys are definitely good enough to do any of the three or all of them.

Re: UM @ SCSU: Everything this series should be

Are these games going to be pushed to crappy FSN Plus?

According to the schedules listed on this site, both games are FSN+ Why "crappy" though? I've never had any problem with FSN+ (well... other than the first time they did this a few years back and I couldn't figure out what channel it was on my system...)

Not sure where you are going with this but this is the best team SCSU has had in quite awhile so expectations are high.

This is the latest in the season we have ever been in the conference lead. We have a great freshman class that is way above any expectations
(Brodzinski, Morley, Kossila, Prow and Murray - hopefully Benik).

We have 3 Hobey candidates (Leblanc, Hanowski and Dowd) . Not to mention 3 of the best defensemen around Jensen, Gravel and Prochno. They play a great style and are fun to watch.

But yes, there were 3 or 4 games that were dreadful this season but they have played outstanding the last 3 series minus a period here and there.

Since moving to D1 a little over 20 years ago I would rank this just under the 00-01 and 01-02 seasons so far (disappointing losses in the NCAA tourney, expected to go much further).
It's probably on par with the 09-10 season - our first NCAA win.

With the way they are playing recently I would agree with FT, LT that any or all of them are possible. Especially if Faragher continues and Benik starts getting hot.

For most of the games I have watched on FSN+ the channel is not in HD (Comcast in Twin Cities). That is probably the knock most people have on it.

Other than Kevin Gorg's painted eyebrows...they do a decent job.

1. The channel is hard to find
2. It is not in HD

SCSU doesn't have their games in HD either, but that is a student-run broadcast. I was looking forward to being able to watch my team in HD.

How can you NOT go hard on the old Jackwagon??? Even Russo knew about the tourney being at the X and he covered the team for what 4 months? :p if you don't know what you are talking about, assume. Go back to loving on the Lynx - YUCK.

I guess what I'm asking isn't what you think is possible, but more so what do you expect out of them? For instance I expect the Gophers to make it back to the Frozen Four. Anything less I'd probably be disappointed with, anything more and it would be a pleasant surprise.

At the beginning of the season I thought all three were possible and expected our team to contend for the MacNaughton and at least win one NCAA tournament game.

At this point I expect us to win the MacNaughton since we have a 5 point lead and are playing this series at home. Frozen Four and NCAA title are hard to predict because plenty of teams that were favorites to win it all have lost before even getting to the Frozen 4. I will say that this is a better team than the 09-10 team that lost to Wisconsin to go to the F4. I think SCSU is one of the 5 best teams in the country and this weekend should make it clearer as to whether we are maybe even higher than that.

I take it one game at a time. A lot will depend on brackets and who you draw(who's hot who's not) when you get there. When you get the top talent like Minnesota typically does it is easier to have those type of expectations year in year out.
SCSU and Minnesota struggle against trapping teams so I don't put a lot into that stuff. It's more on strategy, matchups and who comes out working the hardest. Minnesota has had the talent recently but they ran into a hot goaltender last year and the years earlier they didn't bring it. Plus like a lot of people said, getting Guentzel back shored up a lot of Minnesota's defensive issues. I still see a lot of lapses by both of these teams at times. Mostly when they are behind a goal and are pressing in the offensive zone they breakdown their rear puck support or are positionally way out of place for defensive support.

I get FSN+ in HD. On the other hand, the cable system where I grew up in Minnesota doesn't get FSN+ at all, despite getting FSN.

I agree, SCSU is one of the best4-5 teams in the country. Wouldn't be at all surprised if they ended up at the Frozen Four this year.
