UAH Hockey 2011-12: Will Someone Break the Conference Logjam? Thanks.

Re: UAH Hockey 2011-12: Will Someone Break the Conference Logjam? Thanks.

Curious what you base your UP voting bloc on? Trying logical as the furthest to travel with some of smallest budgets? (We do not use logic here) Example wouldn't FSU be a no bloc (recent success aside) as they were almost going to cut the program not long ago? Care to list the nWCHA schools with your guess to it's vote and confidence level? Personally I would vote yes in. I mean who wouldn't want eight points :D

My logic is that, yes. What I know about the other six schools is 1) inside information that 2) is a month or two old at this point. I would be hard pressed to make a case for how the nine schools would likely vote that wouldn't betray the thinking of one or more people inside UAH. As such, I have chosen not to do so, but I would be interested to see others make their arguments.

Karr got the job at NMU.

I'm seeing on "The New WCHA 2" thread that during the Forrest Karr press conference it was mentioned that the next WCHA meetings are June 12-14 in Detroit, but can't find any confirmation. I wouldn't expect a decision on UAH then, but perhaps. I'd like to get at least some indication on how the process is going.

I hope that there's a public date on when they act. I could see them acting then, but I think that's too soon for us to get the result that we want. I don't know that we've had a chance to make our case to a room full of decision makers.

Re: UAH Hockey 2011-12: Will Someone Break the Conference Logjam? Thanks.

Not knowing much background on UAH's athletic administration, does anyone know if they would accept a sizeable exit fee (also applicable to the elimination of the sport entirely) as a condition of acceptance to WCHA (or any other conference for that matter)? Just curious, as agreeing to this might assuage conference member concerns about the long-term stability of the program.

I'm fairly sure that's not been discussed.

Lou called me, and we talked about things. Things are pretty good with the WCHA bid. They could be better. We have hope everyday that they'll get better. The Karr hire can't hurt and probably helps. Things are good otherwise; didn't ask about any more forwards. We talked a bit about the alumni game tomorrow night at the Iceplex and the golf outing on Saturday. I don't know that I'll be out for anything on Saturday [y'all know that this fat man doesn't golf], but I'll probably see y'all tomorrow night, if for no other reason that I want to thank Roscoe personally for what he's done with the alumni.

I don't. I'll see if Lou can tell me something that I can release.

Just ask him which schools' websites we should be monitoring. ;)

I suspect the rest will be filled out with D3 and club teams since all the DI schedules pretty maxed out from what I can see. We're up a couple from the 7/8 DI weekends we were looking at back at season's end, so that's good.

Re: UAH Hockey 2011-12: Will Someone Break the Conference Logjam? Thanks.

U-18 and maybe one more. Since everyone else can read just as well as I can, we will be applying for a one-year waiver of the NCAA minimum games requirement. We cannot pre-apply for the waiver. I would be completely stunned if our waiver went unapproved given the situation. I don't think this year is any different from 1998-99 when we played a hybrid D-II/I schedule, because you can look at UAH as a renewed D-I team.

Thanks, Portera. We had a great schedule for this season.

Lou says we're done at eight. School should have a PR soon.

WCHA discusses Alabama-Huntsville, but too many questions remain
http://www.miningjournal.net/page/b...untsville--but-too-many-questions-remain.html

According to one source who is familiar with past WCHA meetings, there is support in the league for adding the Chargers, however, it is not strong support and nowhere near a consensus.

I know there's still a lot of work to do, but this did not raise my optimism level.

And then there's this:
http://www.miningjournal.net/page/b...WCHA-commissioner-Bruce-McLeod--UPDATED-.html

The WCHA plans to pair the two Alaska schools in the first round of the WCHA Tournament every year regardless of seeding. That they are willing to kill seeding integrity to avoid two extra trips between Alaska and the 48 indicates to me how hesitant they are to add Huntsville to the travel itinerary. I think getting into the WCHA will be tougher than we even thought.

Yeah, looking at this realistically, this doesn't leave me with a whole lot of confidence. Knowing that we looking to get in, they first made sure that the voted & approved a nine team schedule and tournament for 13/14. Why would you do that if you had any leanings towards adding a 10th team and just cause all the scheduling rework? That they've agreed to let UAH give their presentation, on the heels of all they decided this week and the spoken concern about costs, kinda has the feel of "well, we let you address us but..."

I'm still hopeful the UAH folks can be extremely convincing, but not feeling like the odds in their favor. Reminds of lots of news headlines about building new highways/jails/power plants/<insert latest public craze here> - there are many, many people who are in support of such things, but when the rubber hits the road it's the "but not in my backyard" argument.

Re: UAH Hockey 2011-12: Will Someone Break the Conference Logjam? Thanks.

I think the WCHA is more likely than AH, but I think we may well be looking at a situation where each thinks it's the other's job to "save" us. My take comes down to what I said in 2009: if we're offering a travel subsidy, what's your problem?
