UAH Hockey 2011-12: Will Someone Break the Conference Logjam? Thanks.

It's a shame Penn State didn't agree to play at UAH, as well. I don't think PSU has hit their 34 games allowed either, so it would have worked.
Penn State has filled their allotment. 12 games are against D-III, Club, or the U18 team, but they do have 34 games scheduled for next season.

Re: UAH Hockey 2011-12: Will Someone Break the Conference Logjam? Thanks.

Has UAH petitioned the NCAA for AL to be added to the AK/HI extra games exception in hockey? If not, why not?

I'm not sure of the procedure, but I don't think that the University can make that pitch. That AK/HI exception is for all sports. Some have suggested an exemption for schools X miles away from the closest member school in your sport, which would allow for growth in any number of sports, including say lacrosse most anywhere but the East Coast. Given that the change would have to be decided at a very high level of the NCAA, I don't think we'll see anything on that score. This is a whole different kettle of fish than the grandfathering and the continuance of the CHA's auto-bid after dropping below six member schools.

Re: UAH Hockey 2011-12: Will Someone Break the Conference Logjam? Thanks.

Why can't the University can "make that pitch? Is there a law/regulation somewhere that says they can't? Hockey is already unique with allowing non-DI schools to have hockey as their only DI sport. 100% of the shots not taken don't go in. UAH suffers from the very same problem in hockey that prompted the AK/HI rule. Investigating what is required for a new NCAA rule and following-up with such action just seems to be logical. It at least keeps the topic alive and indicates continued interest from the UAH administraion.

I'd like to see any indication that W. E. Brophy has taken any action to save the program rather than his original covert actions to take it to club level. After taking UAH out of the U of A System was removed from the legislative agenda, much of the impetus to keep the program alive has disappeared. While Brophy's salary had to be based in some part on his managing a DI sport, his life will be much simpler without it. Seriously, are either the President or William taking any proactive actions at this time?

Dr. Altenkirch and Dr. Brophy are both hard at work to get us into a conference. EJ's actions have been vastly different under the new administration.

That's not true; see, for example, Hobart lacrosse.

I believe there (were) some colleges that play up on soccer and water polo.

New York Tech and Dallas Baptist baseball.

Hartwick soccer.

Sorry, I accidentally omitted the qualifying word "fairly". Then, that gets into Websters' discussion on whether or not it's proper to ever use the third definition of unique with a qualifier in that manner.

I'm not going to argue you on that point. Just trying to make sure that you are making factually correct arguments.

Aww. I'm sorry I hurt your feelings. Next time I'll make sure not to correct you when you're trying to make an excellent point, but you're forgetting the actual facts.

Re: UAH Hockey 2011-12: Will Someone Break the Conference Logjam? Thanks.

...they struggled to get their heads around the idea of a whole conference and blamed the cost containment idea rather than the fact that a bunch of D-3 teams had just moved up to D-1.
RIT is the only D-III team in AHA and to the best of my recollection the only D-III team to ever be a member of the AHA or MAAC. It was originally a group of D-I schools that had either been "playing down" or not playing at all and D-II schools that were losing their championship.
MAAC D-I: HC, CC, SHU, Fairfield, Iona, UConn, Army
AHA D-I: NU, RMU, AFA
MAAC/AHA D-II: BC (now BU), AIC, MC (now MU), QU
AHA D-III: RIT

Always looking for ways to get more games for you. How about convincing Army to send their team down to Fort Benning, GA for training or military base site preview purposes and playing them in the 10,000 seat Columbus Ice Rink that opened one year ago. Besides minor league hockey teams, Auburn and Florida State use the rink for their club teams so bringing in some D1 teams may go over well there. It would also be a reasonable drive for UAH fans and it may be enough to get Army there instead of Huntsville. Army is also one school with enough open available games.

No need to go to Ft. Benning, Redstone Arsenal is < 5 mins from the UAH campus.

You're right, of course. Many of the original MAAC schools where D1, but I was referring to their level of hockey. They were playing at a D-3 level and under D3 rules. So when they "moved up" hockey-wise, so to speak, in the early years they were for the most part not putting teams on the ice that were made up of D1 level players. A lot of what got blamed on "cost containment" was really a result of the state of those programs at that time. Had UConn or Holy Cross made the jump alone, nobody would have been too surprised if they struggled for several years. In this instance 9 or 10 schools all made the move together. They were pretty competetive among themselves, but struggled against more established programs, as should have been expected. But that struggle was blamed on the league's cost containment approach when a much bigger factor was the fact taht they were all only a couple of years removed from D3 hockey. Now that isn't to say that cost containment doesn't to some degree limit the upside. It clearly does. But we have seen the gap close quite a bit from those early days. And while it will never close completely due to lots of factors, the quality of play has improved dramatically, and AHA teams can at least on occassion, play with the 'big boys." RIT certainly demonstrated that a few years ago.

I guess my bottom line in all this is that AHA hockey is pretty decent. Fun to watch and if UAH has the opportunity they shouldn't pass it up becasue of the "cost containment" stucture. While that limits the upside to some degree, it doesn't have the negative impact that some people, erroneously in my view, attributed to it.

I'm sure that our preference is the WCHA, but we would take an AHA bid over folding the program any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I'm trying to run down information on what Chargers are still playing professionally. For recent guys, I think Matt Baxter is going to be back in Dayton, and Ryan Burkholder's talking about some league in China. I know Joe Koudys played in Germany last year, but I think he's decided to hang them up. Any help would be appreciated [hint hint MN].

Speaking of alumni, Tyler Butler ['03] got signed by the Fort Wayne Komets, who move to the ECHL this upcoming season. 32 and he's still at it; he captained a CHL team in Arizona last year. Glad to see Buttsy get another shot in the ECHL.

GFM <-- hoping the silence on the conference front is a good thing...

Got the hint and I sent you an e-mail through this website.

EliteProspects.com has a very handy "where are they now" feature if you pull up a team page. They are more Euro/Non-North American based, but do a pretty good job of being more up to date than HockeyDB (and easier to find information).

Only drawback is that the NHL/AHL/ECHL/CHL can take until October to be accurate.

Surfing via mobile otherwise I'd post a link.
