UAH Hockey 2011-12: Will Someone Break the Conference Logjam? Thanks.

Re: UAH Hockey 2011-12: Will Someone Break the Conference Logjam? Thanks.

GFM - Just curious, when the original announcement was made, did the players receive some sort of special dispensation to transfer out (ie no 1-year penalty) and have the new developments altered that arrangement? or changed the minds of any that had committed elsewhere?

PS - Paul Brand left Elmira (D3) for UAH, and there were a couple of very interesting series between the two schools in the 'early days'.

Is this one of those generally known things? Is it in the public somewhere? Are you saying this based off of internal sources? I'm not trying to be adversarial. I'm just curious.

GFM

I heard our coach say that what was being discussed was each school average out what each trip cost their institution then the Alaska schools would cover the difference. Fairbanks would be getting a better deal then they had and the visiting schools would not have a huge dent in the company credit card.

It was some time around the middle of the season when i heard that so it may very well be entirely different now I have no idea. Coach also said he had hoped to see UAH find a home in the nWCHA and what his take was on the ccha not granting them in was the question of scheduling with your shared arena.

I hope for your sake you get admittance into the nWCHA as soon as possible. The Lakers had a little scare last summer which pales in comparison to your situation.

GFM is ther still a jersey sale to help your cause ?

When the announcement was made that the program would be dropped, players were allowed to leave for other schools without sitting out for a year. A couple players exercised that option.

Yes, players were given leave to go to other places, and our coaches were actively helping them find new homes. Three did so: Clarke Saunders [NoDak], Mac Roy [RMU], and Nick Gatt [Sparty]. When the program was revived in December, the free rein on transferring ended. I know of at least one player who was offered to be let out of his NLI by the new school, but the player chose to keep the commitment. I don't blame any of them for leaving, but I sure wish Saunders was staying.

The VBC has heard that complaint loudly and clearly, and the deal has changed, not only in terms of arena flexibility but also the revenue split on home games. There's been a sea change, and I for one like it.

UAH in Minnesota Tourney after Xmas with Gophers, Air Force, Boston College

I don't think I've seen us referred to as "Alabama in Huntsville" before.

Still, that's cool. Although, they should just go ahead and say the opening pairings will be UAH vs. Minnesota and Air Force vs. Boston College.

That will be a great tournament. Hopefully one of the goalies will be up to stealing a couple of games. Plenty of minutes to be had, y'all.

Since I mentioned goaltending: UAH is after a third goalie. I don't know if they're bringing someone to be in the mix or someone to be the clear #1. Neither Griggs nor Groh have gotten enough ice time to determine if they're up to being a D-I #1. Chances are that the coaches favor Griggsie, but CJ could always pull it out with more ice time. Eligibility is an interesting question: Johnny has two more years of eligibility if he wants to play them both, but my understanding is that he'll graduate in 2013. Will he want to enroll in graduate school and play his fourth year? CJ has two years left. I'm sure that the coaches will have to see who they get interested in coming down here and base their plan on that. If they get a kid that they think can play right away, I'm sure they'll throw him out there. Otherwise, I wouldn't be surprised to see next year's third get redshirted.

[It's always fun for me to talk about our goalies because I hear from all three dads. I know they're reading. ;)]

GFM <-- interested to see how the goaltending situation shakes out and who will be feeding Lysaght the puck.

Re: UAH Hockey 2011-12: Will Someone Break the Conference Logjam? Thanks.

... and Gregg Guehl will be the third goaltender on the UAH roster come the fall: http://nahl.com/news/story.cfm?id=5485

Speaking of goalies, Cam Talbot ('10) has been ripping it up in the AHL postseason. He wasn't expected to start, but he got the all for game one, stopped all 42, then stopped 41 the next games, then won a 4-3 OT game. WTG 'bot.

So...Griggs, Groh, and Gruehl. Great gregarious goaltenders. :p

I'm pretty sure this is the first time that UAH has had all three goaltenders be Americans. As long as I've been associated with the program, we've had at least one Canadian goaltender. I think we'd have to go back to the club days to find that again.

Man, now I wish I had access to the archives. I so want to look that up now. The oldest piece of UAH hockey literature that I have is a 1990 game program. Randy Resek of Toronto was a senior that year, so that would mean UAH had at least one Canadian goalie since at the latest 1987.

I know, right? We can safely say that it's true for the current D-I iteration: Briere, Byrne, Munroe, Narduzzi, Talbot, and Saunders, and those are just the guys who were #1s. The only American goalie who's seen #1 minutes in that time has been Blake MacNicol.

Going back from memory in the mid-80's as UAH transitioned from club to varsity, I believe the goalies at that time were Barry Friedman (Illinois) and Chris Parsons (Michigan). Parsons and Resek may have been the tandem in the late 80's.

From 86-90 the goalies that came thru the team were:
Jim Mitchell (backup goalie for us - last year was 86-97) - from Vancouver, B.C.
Barry Friedman (last year was 86-87) - from Springfield, Illinois
Chris Parsons (last year was 87-88) - from Michigan (Detroit area, but can't remember which town)
Randy Resek (last year was 90-91 I believe) - from Scarborough (part of Toronto)
Doug Brown (not sure when he finished, but believe 91-92) from Detroit area
Brian Toffey (last year was 92-93) from Vancouver Island
Bob Thompson (came in 89-90, but not sure what years he ended up playing if at all) - from Zurich Illinois I believe.

Thanks, Paul. Jim Mitchell's presence would confirm we've had at least one Canadian goaltender throughout UAH's varsity history (1985-present). Anyone have data from club time? I believe tnlong has the National Club Championship programs from 1982-84. Perhaps they show where the goalies were from back then.

Re: UAH Hockey 2011-12: Will Someone Break the Conference Logjam? Thanks.

Steve Moerner was the MAN from 1982 to 1985; before that, goalies were Wayne and Bobby Zeek. I think Moerner was from Michigan (Douglas, can you correct me on that?), at least not from Canada; can't remember the Zeek home town, but I think they were from the US, too.

Re: UAH Hockey 2011-12: Will Someone Break the Conference Logjam? Thanks.

Now that it looks like UCONN is going to Hockey East, there's some options.

I believe Moerner was from Wisconsin.

All I can recall right now is that he was from the mid-North, as in MI, MN, WI. I know he's in Michigan now. If Terry is looking he can probably dig out the answer for us. All my Club Days stuff (except for two championship flags) is in boxes in the attic of my back garage.
