TV: The League Of Anarchy Is A Bunch Of Justified Mad Men

To be fair, I've never seen The Longest Day, have no interest in Band of Brothers or Saving Private Ryan, and thought Schindler's List was wildly overrated.

The Longest Day was good, not great. Lots of cliches. Saving Private Ryan has some slow stretches, but the first 25 minutes are astounding. Band of Brothers is about as good as it gets for TV miniseries. The interviews with Winters and the other members of Easy are wonderful. "Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?" "No...I served in a Company of heroes."

Casablanca has some of the most quotable lines in movie history and is a fantastic story.

Re: TV: The League Of Anarchy Is A Bunch Of Justified Mad Men

Everyone SHOULD watch "Kids," and "Requiem For A Dream" but I'll be dammed if I recommend those movies. Best movies I'll never watch again.

After watching "Requiem," it was like "OKAY, OKAY, I'LL NEVER DO DRUGS!"

Re: TV: The League Of Anarchy Is A Bunch Of Justified Mad Men

I will not watch Argo because it is a Hollywood piece of "mostly fiction" as you aptly put it. Affleck made the CIA the heroes while ignoring the role of Ambassador Ken Taylor and the Canadian government.

No he didnt...not that you would know that since you havent seen it.

It was Hollywood-ed up in parts yes, and the role of the Canadian prime minster was lessened, but it was still a pretty darn decent story.

There was an article from some CIA people who were involved, and they said that it got the gist of the story right, but was so absurd of a plan and went off so well and smoothly that it would have made for a boring movie.

I'd give it a pass and call it Disney-fied like Miracle was.

And I've seen Band of Brothers, Schindlers List, Saving Private Ryan, and the Longest Day. All great movies (series for Band of Brothers).

I still need to see Casablanca.

Re: TV: The League Of Anarchy Is A Bunch Of Justified Mad Men

I saw Saving Private Ryan....really no interest in Casablanca. The Longest Day is also on the ol' queue.

You are officially no longer allowed to razz me for movies I haven't seen. That you haven't seen band of brothers, the longest day, casablanca, or Schindler's List is crazy.

Re: TV: The League Of Anarchy Is A Bunch Of Justified Mad Men

I fully admit it is a fault. I hang my head in shame. It IS on my list.

Jesus, it was like $25 or something on blu-ray before X-mas. And yes, this is one everyone should own, not just stream from Netflix or whoever.

Well yeah. It's of its period. That's what Hollywood did then.

Another Cornelius Ryan book-turned-movie that got pretty lukewarm reviews, but I just love is A Bridge Too Far.

I actively am choosing not to watch Schindler's List, because I have difficulty watching that sort of subject matter. I barely kept it together watching Lone Survivor...and that is no Schindler's List, you know?

It's not like I haven't gotten around to it. ;)

Back to tv shows: Justified (final season) and The Americans start up later this month. Can't wait.

Edit: just added BoB to my queue, and moved up to the #1 slot. You guys happy, now? :p

Agree... everyone should own.

I haven't watched it a a few years now. I'm due and will get to it this winter.

Have seen it at least two times and maybe three now.

Also, just cuz they Hollywoodize a story doesn't mean it can't be great (c.f. The Great Escape). I was disappointed in Argo because it was an amazing true story and they turned it into a crappy vehicle for a crappy actor.

The Longest Day was good, not great. Lots of cliches.

I'd still like to see it, if only for the amazing scale. There is also apparently a "making of the Longest Day" documentary that shows just how unbelievably difficult it was to make.

A lot of today's generation forget/don't fully realize that there were few special effects (in the way we know them now) back than. If they couldn't use miniatures, they actually had to use the real thing. That's what makes many of those movies even more impressive.

Start drinking.

Nah, not in 1962 -- that was the heart of the realism movement (mid 50s to mid 60s). Hollywood today is far more cliche.

I just love is A Bridge Too Far.

Terrific movie, although about a quarter of it could easily be cut with no damage to the plot or the quality (I suppose that's true of many movies). It's as if part of the movie was outsourced to the screenwriters and directors of Airport 77.

Fun fact: a third Ryan book (The Last Battle) was going to be made into a film, but MGM had had a string of flops and couldn't afford to make it.

Schindlers List is the only movie I can think of that has the R rating that was shown in is entirety on broadcast tv (NBC if I recall). I can't remember if it was shown more than once over the years but the time I know it was shown it was shown without commercials save for one 5 minute or so "intermission" halfway through.

Edit: it was in 1997 and had 65 million viewers

This is correct. Also, the first 25 minutes or so of Saving Private Ryan goes commercial-free when it's on TV.

Schindler's List is only difficult to watch in the last 15-20 minutes or so. The rest of the movie is uplifting to know people like Schindler were able to get past the Nazi propaganda and do what's right.

Re: TV: The League Of Anarchy Is A Bunch Of Justified Mad Men

If you put a commercial in the first 25 minutes you should probably be fired on the spot. That's like cutting Guernica in half because it doesn't fit in a shipping box.

Re: TV: The League Of Anarchy Is A Bunch Of Justified Mad Men

Requiem was great but I wouldn't recommend it to easily 40%. I would never say that about Schindler's List.

Rube, I believe you've seen We Were Soldiers, Letters from Iwo Jima and Flags of our Fathers? You shouldn't wait on Band, see it pronto!

Watched The Dirty Dozen the other day fur the first time in at least a decade. Lee Marvin just kills it, as do Telly, Ernest, Donald...

I have seen all those movies, yes. And earlier in the thread I mentioned I bumped up BoB on Netflix. Should get the first disc on Wed or so.

The first hour of that movie is just pure scenery-chewing porn. I don't even know if it's good or bad, it's too much fun to give a frack.
