Trump First Term I: I for One Welcome Our New Trumpy Overlord

Re: Trump First Term I: I for One Welcome Our New Trumpy Overlord

As far as I'm concerned the people who go to the service academies are the best our country produces and should be respected regardless of politics.

Good god. I'm sure all of us have friends who attended service academies. A friend of mine has 4 kids who went to them--1 army, 1 AF, 2 navy. They were nice kids who wanted that path, and their father had a good relationship with a senator. They were not the best and brightest of their classes. They deserve respect because of who they are and because they served, but no more, in my mind, than the kid who went to two years to community college then jointed the service or the kid who graduated from State U to become a school teacher.

WRONG! Teachers are money grubbing overpaid lazy people! #thingstheGOPbelieves

I chuckle when I see this sentiment repeated over and over. The military has more successfully marketed itself over the last 15 years than any entity in the history of mankind. Yes there are plenty of fine people who have attended the service academies over the years, but the full on worship of all things military in this country since 9-11 has not been a net positive. The service academies have more than their share of people you would not be proud to know if you took off your American flag goggles for a minute or two. In fact I know quite a few people who say the best officers in the military are ones who have come out of other universities and ROTC programs. The academies are fine and proud institutions and most who attend do so for good reasons and are patriotic and eager to serve their fellow citizens. But so are lots of other people. This blind blind faith in our military needs to stop. Never has the rant by Bruce Springsteen preceding his live version of the song "War" meant more.

And all of a sudden Trump's $25 million settlement gets pushed out of the news.

EDIT: And Trump blamed (deliberately, one assumes) the minority cast, rather than the largely white audience that was actually booing.

Trump University is dead anyways...the second the judge told the people to settle people stopped caring.

Good god that's about the most outrageous thing I've read on this thread yet. And that's saying a lot

Thats a decent thought, certainly better than anyone else on here has been able to come up with.

I was reading some of the old stories on Petraeus tonight and it really is a fascinating case. If mistress #1 doesn't go psycho and mistress #2 doesn't report it to an FBI agent she knows he probably never would have been caught. It's surprising, and at least to me doesn't make any sense, that the mistress who was in possession of the classified information was never charged with anything. She actually had classified info from other sources too.

I hope Sessions or whoever is AG doesn't spend any time trying to prosecute Hillary. It would be best to draw a line under the whole situation and move on. Her career is finished and country should be focused on more important matters.

I hope democrats don't let their hatred for Trump and conservatives overshadow how wonderful some (not all) of the people he has nominated are. As far as I'm concerned the people who go to the university of minnesota are the best our country produces and should be respected regardless of politics.

Trump's nominations are really bad though. Many just don't have any policy experience...and others are just conservative talking points. Who's going to actually have the knowledge to run the government.

Ill say this about the people from the armed services that have come back to work in industry. While many or most are great, a very large chunk of them are hothead alpha males who substitute chest puffing for real leadership. Intelligent discussion is substituted with a perverted chain-of-command in place of a discussion among peers.

Being from an academy doesn't mean you are great, it means you knew a congressman and have at least some smarts.

So much this.

My experience has changed over time. Years ago people I worked with that were in the military in the 70s or 80s very rarely brought their service up as one of the first topics of discussion, and absent some specific MOS, specialty or rate that applied to our civilian jobs, I had no opinion on how their military service affected their job performance. Nowadays, if someone was in the military, it is often the first thing you find out about them, and too many people assume there is a higher likelihood they will excel at whatever they do in the civilian world simply due to the fact they wore a uniform.

This is a great post and I agree with it wholeheartedly. I think it is more of a reflection on society in general than anything else though.

I certainly don't blindly love all things or all people military. There is no doubt a percentage of people who go to the service academies are deplorables or whatever you want to call them. I think there are a decent amount who spent 25+ years serving their country and passed up on a lot of wealth and comfort. They should be honored and appreciated regardless of what we think of their political views.

Honored and appreciated, that's fine. But if they're a c**t I'm still gonna call them a c**t.

Re: Trump First Term I: I for One Welcome Our New Trumpy Overlord

My opinion is that people in the armed forces deserve a fair amount of respect up front. It they betray that respect...then there's no reason to extend it.

Also I think our police and firefighters deserve respect along the same lines. Often those who respect armed forces even a bit too much, don't reserve nearly the same respect for police and firefighters who risk their lives to keep our communities safe. That's unfortunate.

Re: Trump First Term I: I for One Welcome Our New Trumpy Overlord

The only service academy I'll really openly question before giving true respect is the Air Force Academy. Not because "hurr durr Chair Force," but because the AFA is notorious for being a breeding ground for Christian fundamentalists and a pretty terrible culture because of that. A lot of Air Force rank and file can't really stand academy grads because of that.

None of which has anything to do with their qualifications as cabinet members.
