Top Chef Las Vegas

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

Comment in the preview for next week's episode: "Kevin makes food I make on my day off." I think that was Mike V. DOOSH. He really makes me angry. Have some class, seriously.

It's not the first time he's said that. I loose a lot of respect for him when he does. While your style of chef may be different, it's not better- it's just different. Kevin executes very well, and he is being credited for doing as much. Mike V has also "insulted" the diners for not getting his point. You may have a point, but you also have to recognize that half of the battle is making the judges happy. If you don't, it really doesn't matter how "sophisticated" your food is.

IMHO, I think Kevin makes the final 3. And has a very good chance of winning it all.

Glad to see Robin gone, but I thought Eli was toast last night. I actually liked the concept behind Jen's dish, but she really failed in the execution. The plastic sword was fun [Sword in the Stone is one of my favorite childhood movies :)].

Eli probably would have been toast, but Robin sank her own ship when she showed them the failed sugar work. Proved she didn't have the confidence to stick to her own food and didn't have the talent to compete with the others.
Eli's dish, while apparently terrible tasting, looked more professional and was more inspired.

I struggle with my feelings about Mike. He's a great chef, but his arrogance bothers me (as does his lack of concern about the customer). On the other hand, I feel like he also gets negatively portrayed. For example, when he yelled at Robin to get out of his space when he was cooking, I was totally in his corner. She left her station a mess and he had to deal with it, now he's in the midst of a timed cooking challenge and she's intruding in his space. The kitchens aren't that big, so it's a big imposition.

Go back to the end of judges table when Mike I was the one that was kicked off, if you have it on DVR. There was something going on between those two when they made the decision, so much so, that Gail sort of gave this look of surprise when she saw it.
Interesting. I'll have to go back and check that out...

I think this is the most important part. In every challenge (with the exception of the restaurant wars challenge, which I have hated every season), he has done extremely well and has been praised by the judges. In addition to one up's-manship, I wonder if Mike is also feeling upstaged by a younger chef (Kevin is 26, Mike is 30) from the South (not traditionally thought of as haute cuisine).

I don't mind the younger V's arrogance, especially given how much editing goes on with every episode and I've seen hints of humility here and there. Besides, his brother and Eli are just as cocky/confident they just express it differently.

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

So, apparently Season 5 is out on DVD, but none of the other seasons are? I thought last season was the weakest...

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

Did anyone else notice Jen said she was ready to go? She said it twice. When she was trying to figure out what she was going to make she seemed like she had other things on her mind. I wonder if she has beaten herself our something outside the show has distracted her.

Either something outside the show or she was resigned to the fact she's done so poorly lately that it might have been her time to go.

I heard it once and wondered what she meant. My thought was she wanted to go home to ???

I like how he has a disconnect and can't see that if he likes to eat it on his day off, maybe the judges will like to eat it, too.

Like he's putting the form ahead of the function.

Went back and looked at this tonight, Jen kisses him pretty forcefully on the cheek, which is what I think Gail is reacting to. Interesting...

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

Well, we have our finalists! The Brothers V, Kevin, and Jen. Anyone else call this a while ago?

Just kidding... it's NOT the finale next week. Good, because I'm not going to be able to watch. :(

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

I really enjoyed this episode and I got the feeling Tom was extremely proud of what the chefs did in front of such an esteemed group.
I wanted it to be about a half-hour longer. For how interesting the quickfire was for once, I was annoyed it only got about five minutes of coverage. So much cooking they could have shown, and the same goes for the EC and Judge's Table.

Still a good episode though.

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

I love how every single time Kevin wins something, he is truly humbled by it and you can very much tell. He's so sincere. He cooks what he knows and he goes with his gut and it's paying off for him so well.

Does anyone else notice that the set lights glare off of his eyes at Judges' Table? It makes him look misty-eyed, but maybe he really is and that's why the lights reflect. Something I've noticed this season.

Kinda sad to see Eli go. I thought maybe Michael was going to get the boot this week.

Predictions (mostly baseless :)) - Jen's out next week, and either Kevin or Bryan win overall. I think Mike's attitude may get the best of him.

I think ultimately their motto needs to be K.I.S.S. It's gotten Kevin really far.

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

Gail & Tom's blogs are really interesting this week. I really think they are enjoying this season due to the high quality of the chefs. IMHO there is no way Tom drags last year's crew in front of the amazing group he assembled to judge last night. No way.

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

I sure thought Kevin slit his own throat with trying that immersion cooking method, but it worked out for him. I thought Bryan might go home for this lamb, but Eli's was worse, so I think that was the difference.

Immersion cooking...doesn't anyone like a good seared piece of meat these days?

I kind of laughed when Kevin said that the bonus $30,000 was just about as much as he made in a year. I picture him driving a 2003 Prius and and Brothers Volt bumming around in BMW's.

She seem's to be low man right now. What happened to her amazing sauces? I think Kevin has the edge over the others. If he doesn't win I would guess Byran takes it.

I wouldn't mind seeing any of them win besides Mike.

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

It's a frat party, Bryan wins and Jennifer goes home.
Great and classy episode, I had no clue who would win and who would go home. I was really, really, hoping they would move all four into the finals.
