Top Chef Las Vegas

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

I'm going to go with the pudgy grey-haired guy, I don't know that I want pork in my dessert.

(Also, when did Brian get a big-*** tattoo (or at least the outline) on his arm!)

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

My thoughts through the show:

- Kevin gets a sucky draw in the knife pull. Preeti and Ash? Bleh.
- Surprise fourth course, maybe? We'll see after the commercial.
- Surprise! <s>Your</s> Their moms!
- Ahh, there's the fourth course. A dedication to their mothers. Kinda cute, veeeeeeeery predictible.
- Kevin's "mom" dish sounds really good. Fried chicken, yummm.
- Bacon brittle!
- And here we go, first course is headed to the table.
- I really think the judging in the finale should be blind.
- "Which dish did you like better?" Un. fair. :p
- I think I would've enjoyed any of the "chef's choice" course.
- Tom looks annoyed.
- Dessert might be a little rough. Glad they made it mandatory though. Let's see how creative these guys can get.
- Judges' Table.

I'll save the end until later :)

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

That was a horrible thing to do. Do they do that every year? Mean, mean, mean.

I don't think so....that was wicked cold.

Michael nailed the box and chef's choice dishes and methinks those weighed much more heavily than the other two courses.

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

Nothing against Kevin, but I was very glad the brothers were the final 2. To me they were flip sides of the same coin, I can't understand how ya can root for one without rooting for the other.

Very strange not seeing Jennifer there.... well, you know what I mean.

Easily the best season since season 1! Wouldn't it be great to see the 2-3-4 finishers of seasons 1 and 6 face off for a mini-season?

Agreed - he got a rough draw on the sous chef... :(

I'll say.

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

Agreed, and I think it's the right thing to do.

Just read Toms Blog. Kevin won course 1, Michael won courses 2 & 3, and Bryan won course 4. And it doesn't sound like picking a favorite in courses 2 & 3 were all that close while the other two were very close.

Edit - Bryan won course 4. Ug my typing.

Hmmm, alright. Myself, I got the impression while the food was at the table that the third course favorite was Bryan's and nothing at Judges' Table really made me change my mind...

Nice comment from season 6 Top Chef:

Bravotv.com: Did you feel as the younger brother that you had something to prove when competing against Bryan?

I don't think I had something to prove. Honestly, when it came down to that moment, I didn't want to win. I didn't want either one of us — I was hoping they'd say, "You both won! Congratulations it's the first time in Top Chef history!" Because you can't celebrate when you know your bother is standing next to you, and he doesn't have the same thing to celebrate about. I worked for a chef one time and he went to take the Certified Master Chef test, and it's one of the hardest tests you can take. There were ten people in his class, and he was the only one who passed. At the end of the whole grueling process he didn't have anybody to celebrate with, because no one else had passed. So it just kind of sucked, at that moment.

And *** is this? lol

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

The more I think about it the more I dislike the random drawing for sous chefs. Kevin really took it up the shorts on that one - and it could have been a lot worse for any of them. More importantly, Kevin really let Preeti's incompetence get to him during the prep time. At the very least only the last 6 or chefs sent home should have been brought back.

I agree. I don't mind the random drawing so much, but have the last six, like you said, and have them draw from there. Clearly the other people got booted early for a reason, and I wouldn't want them working on my team. That isn't to say that they're bad chefs, because clearly they were on the show for a reason, but for whatever reason, maybe the whole competition thing isn't their strong suit, and that's a crap draw for the top three.

I'd agree, but that means someone would have had Robin on their team and I think that would have been more of a distraction than Preeti. (I'd have loved to have chefs from previous seasons in the mix - can you imagine Tre cooking with Kevin! or Marcel and Michael?).

I enjoyed the final and was happy with the winner (though, truth be told, I would have been happy regardless of who they chose). I think this was the best season by far and I hope it's out on DVD.

Looking back, I wonder how much of Michael's personality was the subject of editing. From what I've read over the last few weeks, he seems genuinely more humble than how he was portrayed.

I DVR-ed all the episodes and am very much looking forward to having a marathon (once they air next week's reunion show, of course!).

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

Curse you, editors! I don't care if the drama is removed, I don't like having to read Tom's blog to figure out that the reason Bryan lost, despite "winning" two of the four courses, is because Michael actually won the third course.

And that drawing knives for sous chefs was just stupid.

Agree 100%. My wife and I both thought Bryan had it by what was presented to us on the screen by the editors. I may not watch any more of the series in the future because it's not even reality TV, it's Editor's TV. Don't manipulate the truth.

The the knife thing was dumb unless you had the 6 best losers, not the whole wad of losers. Preti couldn't even cut a stinking pumpkin right.

Several of the judges explicitly said Bryan's food was undersalted. Undersalted = bland. Bland food in the finale will not get you a win. It's inexcusable to not properly salt your food. Undersalting has nothing to do with restraint, but rather a complete lack of confidence in judgement. It's the first hing you learn when preparing food - taste, taste, taste. If his taste was telling him his seasoning was at the proper level, and a group of the best restaurateurs in the country thinks differently, it's you, not them.

I was slightly surprised at the judges not picking kevin for the winner, however I think he'll be this season's best success story even without winning. He's got the best temperament to run a medium to small restaurant where he can continue to develop his own style.

From what I've heard throughout the industry, they do a very good job of judging. Having met TC several times and hearing what other people, and he, have said about the judging process, I'm confident that they picked the correct winner here. The only instance where I thought they completely blew it was when Ilan and Marcel were in the final.

Grey said Tom's blog said that Michael won 2 of the 4 and from the editing how could possibly think anyone but Michael was the winner? It was clear as day before they announced it that he was going to win and he should have won from everything I saw during the episode.
