Top Chef Las Vegas

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

Nice to know I picked the final three on the first week. I am crushing fantasy Top Chef.

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

It seems the only real drama this season - other than the winner being named - was who would join those three in Napa.
I'm totally fine with that. I just want to see a bunch of chefs cooking their tails off and getting fired up by the competition.
Because most cuts taste better sous-vide.
Yay! Welcome back! :)
I hate the editing on this show so much.
Any particular reason?

I can't stand catering challenges, but as far as they go, I guess this one was okay. I feel badly. I want to like Jen, and I do think she's a good cook, but she's just not mentally strong enough.

Happy to see these three in the finals; the finalists from last year should watch and take notes. These guys are in a whole other class.

My statement may have come across wrong....I wasn't complaining. :)
Looking back I'm sure if this show will ever have as good an episode as they did with the Bocuse d'Or.

Just one of those random cases of being annoyed at them manufacturing indecision at judge's table to build drama. Reading this on Tom's blog and then comparing it to what we're shown during the tasting and then at judge's table creates a sort of disconnect:
It may not make sense to you but it was clear to us immediately that it would be Jen who would be going home. What it came down to was that both of her dishes were way too salty. Jen's overseasoning of both her dishes stood out to the judges like a sore thumb. We had our conversation at Judges' Table about whom to send home, but it was pro forma; we already knew and were in complete accord.

There was more of a discussion about who was going to win, where each of the remaining three made excellent choices and also made minor mistakes.

They didn't say a thing about the duck being too salty at any point; in fact, Tom liked the strong duck flavor.

From the comments from the tasting period, I thought Bryan was going home because they said he lacked seasoning that would have put his food over the top. Then when Chiarello was saying why the winner won, he said it was because of the perfect seasoning. The tasting comments were contradictory to that. I think the editing on this episode sucked.

And on the quickfire, Chiarello wants to steal Jen's idea for his own, but doesn't give her the win.

I really like the tasting and judgement on Chopped much more. It'a all out in the open.

Re: Top Chef Las Vegas

It's about time I posted on this thread...

So, apparently Season 5 is out on DVD, but none of the other seasons are? I thought last season was the weakest...

Really? I thought season 2 was far and away the worst, a bunch of whiny little brats....

It's a frat party, Bryan wins and Jennifer goes home.
Great and classy episode, I had no clue who would win and who would go home. I was really, really, hoping they would move all four into the finals.

I would have like to see all 4 move on to, I so have the hots for Jen. :p

I think she's as good of a cook as the other 3 but the mental grind of the extended competition just wore her down.

I still think season 1 is the standard as far as the cast goes in terms of best mix of personality and culinary abilities but this season is a very close second.

And after reading Gail's blog, I'll have to modify that. In terms of the entire cast, I still think season 1 is the standard. But the top 4 has to go to this season - no one but the top 4 won a single elimination challenge over the entire season, wow, didn't realize that!

Anyway, I guess I'm pulling for Bryan but I'd be content with any of the 3 to win. Mike's kind of a cocky ***** but it doesn't strike me so much arrogance as a high degree of self-confidence and a lack of tact.

That's not entirely true. Sous-vide just guarantees even cooking all the way through, so on a show that emphasizes execution it's a wise move. Taste is subjective for the most part, because I personally prefer a nice crust to my steaks.

Agreed on steaks. Throw it on a hot grill, get a little black on the outside, keep it bloody on the inside.

If you do it right, you can sous-vide it and THEN sear on a VERY hot pan- preferrably an iron skillet. That would be the best of the best steaks.

BTW, spoke with Eve this past weekend- she did a cooking demo, and we went yadda yadda. She mentioned that there IS a lot of editing- much of the drama you see is made up, including some of the private moment talks, where they ask pointed questions.

She knows who wins, but obviously can't spill the beans.

One other thing- for you top chef fans who are coming to the FF in Detroit- anyone want to have dinner at Eve? I'm sure I can arrange something for a decent sized group. She's a lot better chef than what you saw on the show- which was totally out of her element. I'd link to her webpage, but it's down for some reason.

Here we go, ladies and gents! I'm trying to do the "virtual viewing party" with Twitter on Bravotv.com but I can't seem to make it work no matter how many times I allow the application. Oh well.
