TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

Re: TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

Did anyone actually think that Tiger was going to let this keep him from playing in the Masters? I certainly didn't, in fact I said this is exactly what would happen quite a while ago. He'll probably go out and win the damm thing.

Re: TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

I for one am going to love the combination of tabloid people and Southern blue-bloods converging on Augusta for that weekend.

The tabloid people won't get anywhere close to Augusta. Way too much security. That's why he won't be playing Bay Hill.

Isn't the airspace above the course protected too?

Re: TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

The anti-Augusta feminists are going to be extra annoyed this year, aren't they?

Although, I'm sure it will be made worse by the fact that Tiger will probably have to stop sleeping with a good number of them.

Re: TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

Normally when Tiger's in the hunt, the weekend TV audience doubles. In this year's Masters he doesn't have to be in the hunt, he just has to make the cut and the TV audience both Saturday and Sunday will probably break all records. Now a significant number of those folks will be hoping for him to get struck by lightning, but they'll be watching.

Hell, if he's in the hunt, its got a **** good chance at cracking the last episode of MASH ratings numbers.

Re: TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

There is no way a golf tournament will ever exceed the percentage of households that watched the finale of M.A.S.H.

That would be the worst thing to happen for any golf fan out there... It would destroy coverage... You would see every other players shots taped and as an afterthough.... It was bad enough before all this Tiger crap went down... Now it's gonna be a total Tiger infomercial...

You're probably right. But what if he's in contention? Ooee!

Changing the subject, my memory on the Hawks isn't as good as yours probably is. I remember "Red" Hay (from CC) centered Bobby Hull but can't remember the right wing. And Stan Mikita centered Kenny Warham (sp) but can't remember the left wing. I do remember Pierre Pilote (smallest defenseman in the league) paired with Elmer "Moose" Vasko (biggest defenseman in the league) do I get extra credit? Who are those missing wingers? I'm sure I'll have a V-8 minute when I see the names.
Also extra credit: I used to buy my Hawks gear at Gunzo's and the occasional ticket at Whitey's right across the street from the Stadium.

Murry Balfor was their mate on the "Million Dollar" line, I know that... Not sure who played with Makita though... That was before my time as he called it quits 3 years before I was born :p

That was just put in there because I am sick and tired of the **** bandwagon... This city went from "We have an NHL Team     " to "OMG, I'm a die-hard season ticket holder"... You wouldn't believe how many times I was asked at work this Christmas season for Jonathan "Toes" (as in what is on your feet) jerseys... I've also been told twice that I was being rude and disrespectful for cheering during the anthem at the UC... You also only see Towes and Kane jerseys... Not any JR or Chellios jerseys sadly :(

I have a Chellios Jersey... :D

I hear you. Growing up with Hull and Mikita tends to spoil you. After 10 or 15 years of not caring at all about the Hawks (because they were so awful) I've recently come to realize they're a pretty good team. I got to reminicing a week ago about Bobby Hull on the Olympics thread and I attached a video of him getting a hattie against Toronto in '67. The first two came on blistering slappers that nobody in the building saw. Check it out if you have the time.

FYI, Whitey's was a scuzzy bar across Madison street from the Stadium (pretty much that whole block was given over to bordellos when the sun went down) and he was a licensed ticket broker. So once in a while my white, western suburban rear end would drop by to buy a ticket. Looking back on it, I probably shouldn't have done that. :D

I don't think so. I think both the PGA as well as the networks are going to be much more careful and methodical with how they treat Tiger going forward. Tiger's negative ratings were probably not even measurable before last November whereas now they will be off the charts. I'm not just talking about ratings here, I'm talking about a lasting image and perception of the sport.

I've watched about 60 minutes of golf total since Tiger last played, and I play the game and consider myself a fan. I would have eventually come back for more (even sans Tiger) but this leaves a bad taste in my mouth. There's a part of me that's disgusted by the thought of Tiger coming back to the Masters (too calculated, too soon, too convenient, too selfish) as opposed to a no-name tour stop. If this is overblown and overdone it could possibly turn me off completely, no matter how much drama I may miss.

Re: TIGER WOODS hurt in car accident.

Well there really hasnt been any big Tournies since Tiger last played...not many people watch the Accenture Matchplay even if Tiger is there :p

If Tiger is in contention on Sunday I think we will get the usual Tiger fellatio but we will also get a nice dose of how amazing he truly is to be this good while dealing with so many distractions. Remember these are the same people who fell all over themselves to pat Tiger on the back for his fake *** robotic statement :p ;) :D

He chose the Masters for a reason...he won't have to deal with anything. The media will have to walk on eggshells, the fans will behave and the story is just too good.

That and I don't think he ever intended to miss a major because of this. I really don't think he cares that much about what happened, and he sure isn't going to let it get in the way of him trying to break Jack's record.

I'm afraid I disagree. Tiger's return will be (and is being) treated as a bona fide news story. In addition to the millions of Tiger fans who customarily tune in to his tournaments, the audience for this Masters will be even higher--because of Tiger's participation. The network coverage will reflect that reality. And I like your phrase "no name tour stop." Of course there is no such thing if Tiger's there, and especially under these circumstances.

Your observations about calculation and convenience and the rest are on the money. But this is the world we live in. This guy is a billion dollar enterprise and lots of people have millions of reasons to do what they can to help him get past this and back to winning tournaments. Besides, Americans have an endless capacity to forgive bad boys--think Marion Berry.

I think you misunderstood my broader point. I agree with all of the above, but I was think more along my response to Pio:

To be clear I wasn't referring to the media at large and I could still see CBS being very careful with their coverage should Tiger merely make the cut and not do anything miraculous over the weekend. Tiger will very well be protected inside the ivy walls of Augusta, but that's not the same as CBS fellating his every move. I very well could be wrong about this thought and CBS may go off the charts with Tiger coverage, but if it were me I'd be very calculated with how much attention I gave to him given the potential backlash.
