Re: The WJC Thread. USA! USA! USA!

I tell ya, I get no respect!

Brayden Schenn enjoyed another banner five-point game against Norway, giving him six goals and 12 points in three games. But the public address announcer at HSBC Arena pronounced his name as "Sheen."

The announcer was corrected by the pro-Canadian crowd, when the fans yelled "Schenn, Schenn, Schenn." The announcer got the message and said it right the next time.

Schenn had four goals, tying the Canadian mark for goals scored in a game at the world juniors, set by Mario Lemieux in 1983 and matched by Simon Gagne in 1999.

Re: The WJC Thread. USA! USA! USA!

if it's true that Kassian got a 2game suspension than the Slovak kid should be on an airplane as we speak

Kassian's hit was eerily similar to the hit Matt Cook put on Marc Savard.

This hit should be at least 2 games. The player was completely defenseless, did not have the puck and Kassian's play was certainly interferecnce and you could argue charging.

The question I have is why Kassian even tries to make that hit? What was gained...what was the upside?

I have been outspoken about this in the past, but I feel the only way to do away with garbadge like this hit is to not only police the heck out of it, but over-police it. It's the only way to stop these cheap shots and hits to the head that end careers.

This is my problem with this hit also. It wasn't overly violent or cheap, but was completely unnecessary from a hockey/game-flow standpoint. It was also late and on a defenseless target.

Of course we've had this debate before and some chose to blame the person being railroaded because he wasn't looking in the direction of Kassian. Whatever. There was no reason to expect a hit that long after the play is away from you and the Canadian's weren't going to gain an advantage by taking him out.

Predictably, the Sioux, er Canadian fans (:p) on HFBoards are defending the hit. I see no defense for it as it wasn't a good hockey play. Those opportunities are available in every game on nearly every shift and if no one polices it...

I guess I would have to watch it again but the two things I noticed were that he did NOT charge the guy (he seemed to be gliding in from a long distance) and that he kept his elbow down.

I'm pretty sure they guy had just played the puck but again, I would need to see it when I get home and rewatch it.

Seemed to me he went out of his way to tuck the elbow down. Glided in and when he made an impact his shoulder hit the guy on the head (that is going to happen with different sized guys out there). Seemed ok to me. The guy was looking the wrong way. If you're looking down at the puck and don't see it, that's ok to get hit and it's your fault and everyone says "keep your head up!", but if you are looking left and get hit from the right, that is a bad hit? Seems strange to me. Any time a guy isn't looking it is defenseless? I would say no... gotta keep your head on a swivel.

I kept wondering if he left his feet. He might have gotten off the ice about an inch. Not like he was jumping into the guy to hit him in the head but borderline?!?!? That was the one part I saw that I watched a few times to see if he jumped. To me it was open to interpretation but I would have said no.

I thought of Cooke too with this. Savard wasn't hit late like the Slovak kid. Cooke came a hair more behind the shoulder than this one.

I've seen Niagara's Dwyer Rink before, but that mauve wall has to be new, no? My god, I know your're the Purple Eagles, but man, that's gotta go...

Re: The WJC Thread. USA! USA! USA!

I don't see how he came from a long distance. A player is going to go toward the puck, and the Slovak was part of a give-and-go through the neutral zone. It was barely late, and barely high, nor did he have a very high rate of speed. I believe in players respecting other players as much as the other guy, but you can't hold Kassian responsible for the Slovak not keeping his head on a swivel.

It made contact to the head, and deserves the five and a game with the one game suspension.
