The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

From Ted Ryans blog in the BFP:

"Leonard’s situation: On chat boards, it’s been mentioned that senior Brett Leonard of South Burlington could be with the Catamounts again next year since he never played a game as a sophomore. That’s true, but Leonard still must receive a waiver — often called red-shirt — from the NCAA for a fifth year of eligibility.

It should be just a formality but as of midweek, UVM coach Kevin Sneddon couldn’t confirm that Leonard can/will return. Given the dynamo’s level of play as a fourth-line center and role-model of work and energy, his return could only be considered a huge bonus." (emphasis added)

We're famous! ;)

LOL, Someone really does pay attention to these boards...

Well, that's great news that Leonard CAN continue to play. The question I think now becomes does he want to. I like Leonard a lot and it would be great to have him back in terms of hockey, but I have to wonder if Leonard WANTS to come back for a 5th year. I'm sure he would love to play another year of hockey however, does he want to pay $30,000 to do so, does he want to take classes and remain in school JUST to play hockey for another season, or does he want to get his degree, graduate and move on into the real world. Leonard has tremendous energy, good speed and is a hard worker, but if you consider the other VT native, Lenes had all that plus an ability to score and a great shot and he is playing in Austria. I don't see Leonard playing hockey after college and one would have to think he would prefer to move along and get on with his life. I suppose if UVM were to offer him a scholarship for the year, he could take courses towards a Master's but outside of that I don't think it would be a good personal decision for him.

But, all that said, time will tell.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Would like Leonard to stay given how thin they are but it's not going to make a huge difference IMHO. A freshmen will get more ice time next year if he's not playing and that won't hurt in the long run. I think this team is set up to be better next year than this year and then even better each of the following two years (12/13 and 13/14) before dropping again

Hopefully the new arena shows up in four years or so to bump recruiting to an even higher level.

Did our fan base leave on spring break early? Let's hope for two hard earned points this weekend to keep a nose up on PC who can probably get 3 or 4 points this weekend.....

New recruit for the Catamounts, Kyle Reynolds from Alberta:

http://blogs.burlingtonfreepress.com/oncampus/2011/02/25/hockey-cats-add-high-scoring-forward/

He put up 38 goals and 40 assists...in 49 games for Okotoks in the Alberta Junior Hockey League, as a 21 year old. Apparently he visited North Dakota and other WCHA teams were interested.
Cool, I'm psyched. This is not your typical UVM recruit--i.e., someone who can score goals. Let's hope he can continue that trend at the D1 college level.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Kyle Reynolds sounds like the real deal – 78 points in 49 games. Excuse my ignorance – but….does anyone know how the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) stacks up against the USHL? In looking at a few College hockey Rosters it looks like it does ok.
BC – None from AJHL
BU one from AJHL (Kieran Millan)
North Dakota 9 from AJHL (including Matt Frattin)
Denver – 3 from AJHL – And Joe Colborne who now plays on the Maple Leafs came out of the AJHL

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Definitely looks to be a good recruit, small but fast and can score. Another Peter Lenes?

I thing next year is shaping up to be a good season. Girgenson along with Reynolds as Frosh, Brickley, Decenzo, Lenz along with Bruneteau as soph, Stalberg, McCarthy as Juniors ,and Mackenzie, Madore to backstop things.

Hope the kid is all he is touted to be.

I stopped putting to much in pre-college stats after I saw Anctil come in to VT after a 53G-51A season and we all know how much he scored in his career, however his last goal was
a very big one. Some guys like Irwin come in with mediocre stats (8g,12a in 20 games) and develope more scoring than you think.

Great comeback last night to get a huge point, many of us wrote these guys off after the Merrimack weekend and they have since gone 2-2-3 vs a good group of teams. With only 4 seniors
playing right now its a good sign of things to come and if you listen to the way Sneddon was talking in the postgame he seems to think that Medvec & or Miller might be ready by next week.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

After last nights tie Vermont still has a 3 point lead on Providence, if VT gets one point more than Providence tonight they clinch a playoff spot as they would have
a 4 point lead with the tiebreaker going into next weekend.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

hey beat BU tonight! Maine still has a tiny bit of hope for the fourth spot in HE

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Reynolds sounds like a real good recruit to me. Leading the league in scoring is a good sign obviously and he certainly was a finisher this year. Do wonder why other HE teams were not chasing him and why he is committing so late, but we'll take him and hope for the best. His stature, speed and finishing remind be of numbers 8 and 10 from 1994 to 97, we can only hope he's one third that impressive.

The Cats continue to confuse me. They looked only half interested in the 2nd period on Friday night at BU and then they came on and looked good to close the third.

Bummer about all these injuries to the seniors but great to see the younger players get so much ice time. I'm starting to get encouraged about the future, I am hopeful we'll see a nice improvement each of the next few years so were back in the top half of the league and looking at the PWR weekly.

The D that are coming in are pretty highly thought of so despite being young next year I think we can feel good about the potential. And clearly the future is brighter for the forwards since most of them are young/underclassmen.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

I like what I have read about Reynolds. I think if he is a true scorer, he could really raise Brickley's game! He seems like a player who would really compliment Connor's game!

How about this. Put Leonard on the PP as he can actually carry the puck into the zone. Try Lawson on offense and move Borrows back to D as Lawson actually has some hands and Borrows does almost nothing on offense this year. Thought he might blossom this year.......

Second 5 min was a joke and the Travino 5 min was a lame meaningless make up call.

Madore is just awesome. Hope despite his stature the pros give him a shot.

Per the team website the team is honoring seniors Burrows Downing Medvec Miller Lawson - no mention of Leonard.

Also don't be surprised if Zegmus isn't at UVM next year. He has got to clear NCAA and given when he was projected to come in he would have to have made up alot of school work. That may also be the reason why the coaches have Montagna Markinson Mountain Reynolds and if you add Zegmus you added five while losing Burrows Downing Pacan and Stacey.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Thoughts from the weekend :

UVM played very good for periods and a little too passive for stretches. The Cats need to be aggressive the entire game, size is only an advantage if you are using it and for very large periods of time there was not a hit anywhere from a Catamount player. When they are agressive, hitting, and grinding is when they are most effective.

Is it me or is Franzon going through the motions? Seems to me he is really lacking some hustle and just isn't the same player he was as a Frosh. I wonder if with the injuries he is of the mind he doesn't have to work and is secure in ice time by default?

The two 5 min hitting from behind calls were a joke. Brickley's wasnt even hitting from behind, just looked bad. Downing's definitely was but Noonan turned into, had he not turned it wouldn't have been. It's almost like he was actually positioning himself to get the call. Moreover, he was smiling about it afterwards as Downing was heading off the ice. I'm all for protecting players, but if you are going to put yourself in position for it there shouldn't be a call, no different then diving.

Either way, BU deserved Saturday's game. UVM should have had Fridays, I'm not entirely convinced the puck under review actually fully crossed the line, but whatever, those are the breaks. They rebounded nicely and played well.

Here's hoping for a sweep to head into the playoff's on a roll.

Word is that he is working on his acedemics in order to attend UVM next fall.

From Ted's blog :

Reynolds will join forwards Zemgus Girgensens, Colin Markison, Kyle Mountain and Mike Montagna and defensemen Blake Doerring, Nick Luukko and Mike Paliotta in the Class of ’15. UVM is also expected to add at least one forward and possibly a defenseman to the class.

JC I think you had your green colored glasses on when viewing that hit. It was clearly from behind with the intent to check him. That one is what the rule is intended to prevent. Downing's I agree. He bumped him from behind and the BU player flopped.

Agree VT looked better Friday. Last night they were pretty much manhandled but for a few spots here and there.

Let's hope we can actually beat Lowell for once and go into the playoffs with some momentum.
