The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

I can see the first one happening. The second one, not so much.....especially since they're on the road against a PO'd Maine team. I envision a 0 or 1 point weekend. Anything better than that would be a big success.
I'm happily eating my words from yesterday for breakfast. Way to go guys! They're beginning to put the fun back in being a UVM hockey fan. :D Tonight we're playing with house money--let's go out and play loose, have some fun, and go back to Burlington with 4 points.

APparently the bad bounce thing has turned in the cats favor recently; let's hope it keeps up; hard to reconcile last two games with the umaSs beating and no show at Mack. What gives?

I don't sEe them finishing better than 7th and that is if pc and umass lose the remaining games they should lose but ill take that happily after the way things were going two weeks ago

What worries me more is the apparent lack of scoring in the incoming class of forwards. Gergensons is young and will improve and be an impact player but I worry about markinson and montagna not lighting it up like I hoped they would. Although we also don't lose much up front this year or next so not much drop off either

Marshall may have a breakout campaign next year but I doubt it.

How about the snow. amazing

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Well, two points on the weekend has to be considered a success. Lost Medvec early in the game and he never came back. MacKenzie didn't even suit up tonight after last night's injury. These D injuries are happening at the worst time. Depending on the status of MacKenzie and Medvec, maybe we'll see Burrows move back to D??

Madore played very well once again. Thought the team moved the puck around well in the 1st period, but in the 2nd and 3rd period, they couldn't get anything going offensively. They only had a total of 8 shots the last two periods.

Back home for two against UNH next weekend.

Leonard coming back next year. Has a year of eligibility and he's gonna use it.

He should be the captain next year. Oldest kid on the team and inspirational too.

Burrows played D pretty much from the later part of period 1 to the end of the game. UNH lost both games this weekend to Merrimack, not a good thing for UVM - them coming in losing precious pairwise positioning.

Hard to put a 4th liner as Captain but definately a Assistant, I was thinking Mackenzie will get the C

With all they have had happened and with all the injuries I am very pleased at a split this weekend, to go into Maine and add a point lead on the
last playoff spot while gaining a point on 7th is a great outcome. And yes they didnt muster alot of shots in the third last night but they
still were in the game till the last minute.

What the Cats have been missing all year is Confidence and they have found it, to bad they dont have the horses left to be a major threat
to the league title.

I agree, Mackenzie will get the C (should be wearing it this year), Stalberg will get an A and maybe Leonard or Roos

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Looks like both Medvec and MacKenzie are day-to-day, pending further evaluation....from the article in the BFP this morning.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Sneddon was right and they should be proud, they absolutley played 120 minutes of inspired, hard working hockey this weekend. Losing MacKenzie for a game and a half, Medvec for a game while already being down Miller and Marshall they could have made excuses and packed it in. They did not, they moved their feet every shift and really gave the kind of work ethic you hope to see as a fan no matter who was on the ice. If they bring that each game from here on out they will bring fear to any opponent.

Medvec is extremely lucky he didn't come away with a serious neck injury, went head first awkwardly over an opponent and at his height that's a lot of torque on the neck, spine. Was glad to see him skate to the locker room. Burrows seemlessly stepped back to D and played very well, also picked the right times to join in the play as the trailer. Lance Herrington (other than the go ahead goal) also has impressed me with his step to the next level, last year I didn't think he would develop into a viable D-man....he has. Griem looked much more comfortable this weekend and was given ice time in key situations which proves the coaches believe in him. Franzon, since Miller has been out, has stepped up his game as well with the increased minutes. That is comforting as he will be relied upon heavily next season. Lawson did a nice job on a tough matchup for him in Nyquist and Bruneteau continued to look like a veteran at both ends.

Many, maybe all, forwards played to the next level this weekend which was great to see. A lot more moving the feet on the forecheck and the backcheck. Downing, Stalberg, McCarthy all looked like they played like they wanted to dominate. Hmmm, maybe Brett Leonard's work ethic is rubbing off, that's I guess the best way to describe the effort this weekend....all played the Brett Leonard way. Albertson can really get in on the forecheck and play along the wall. Brooks Herrington also played well, I have complete confidence he can become a factor.

Although a little shaky in game 2 on a couple shots, Madore continued to show why he is arguably Hockey East's best....I did say arguably, I know a handful of other guys can be thrown into the conversation.

Optimism after seeing the effort is much higher for the remainder of this season and moving forward. If it is within the rules, I wouldn't be surprised to see a club team player added to the roster this week. Last night's line-up was every healthy body they had and if Medvec and the others can't go they would be dressing 1 less than 4 lines and 6 D.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Vermont played very well this weekend. Came to play both nights. Madore is a solid goal tender and kept the Catamounts in the game on Saturday night.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

I'm just curious, how is it Leonard has another year of eligibility? Was he red-shirted? I thought his first couple of years he just didn't play much. Regardless, I'm delighted to have him. He works hard and sets a great example for the younger guys. In my mind, a guy like that can and should be Captain, even if he is a 4th liner.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

I believe they can add a player, but I would doubt they do given where they are in the season, better to just skate three lines and spot the forth with a rotating double shifting. And try taking fewer penalties so as not to consume so much energy killing penalties

Happy with 2 points, unfortunate they could not steal a point on Saturday

UNH is going to be very ugly this weekend, if we keep each game within 2 or 3 goals I will be surprised. We need to beat BU once and sweep UML (who owns us) to sneak into the playoffs.

He didn't play a game sophomore year.

Is there any confirmation of Leonard being around next year? I know he didn't play a game his Sophmore year but he was a rostered player and practiced every practice. Many athletes don't necessarily play games in a season, that doesn't in itself qualify them to continue to play for extra seasons.

I hope it's true, but I'm not sure where the Leonard thing is coming from...

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

but I hope that Sneddon or the players can find something to get them back to playing win or lose to the best of their ability.

As nice as the 3 points versus Prov was I think the 2 points last week was even better considering how beat up the D core was, what a difference 2 weeks makes.

I can go into this weekend's games believing that win or lose the Cats will make us proud, which is all we can ask for......or all I will ask for.

NCAA gives you five years to play 4 seasons. Even in redshirt years you can practice and travel with the team. That was Brett in his sophomore year thus he is returning nextvyear forcrhat fourth year.

Did he redshirt his sophmore year though? I can't find anything that says he did or reading the few articles from that year that bring up Leonard where they say that's the case. Can you reference the NCAA guidlines for this?

Actually, I did find the section in the NCAA's website referring to this fact. It's a little odd that more teams haven't used this. For example, Brooks Herrington has seen very little ice time, and will likely see very little from here on out. Presumably it would be an advantage for him to merely practice all year, learn the systems, get used to the pace of the game etc. and start next year as opposed to playing 3-4 games and then riding the pine. Weird.

Anyway, I agree it appears that Leonard is eligible for another season. I guess it would now depend on whether he wants to play another season. Leonard is a spark plug and a great kid to have on the ice, however his future in hockey is unlikely to go to the next level. Is it worth it to him to cough up another 30K to play hockey? Who knows, I guess we will have to wait and see what happens.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

UVM looked pretty horrible on Friday night, defensive miscues all over the place and very few scoring opportunities... Not an inspiring showing.

Saturday night was very different. I thought UVM thoroughly outplayed UNH in the 3rd and in OT and should have won the game going away. somehow Digirolamo kept the puck out of the net on numerous stellar UVM opportunities. Too bad for UVM but a great effort and shows that they are building some chemistry despite being badly depleted by defections (Stacey) and injuries. Congrats to the Cats for a great effort, please bring the same work ethic and effort to BU and make us followers proud.

As a side note, it would be nice to get a point or two at BU and solidify that last playoff position. PC is playing UML so they have a great chance to make up ground or even pass UVM in the standings....
