The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Been on this board for years, and I think this a first! Love to have the opinions of other fans on here!

I've always been more of a lurker than a poster here. I haven't written much about college hockey since the HOCKEY-L days, mostly on account of living out of the US for quite a long time, but I had an extended visit in November and got to see quite a few Merrimack games, and they seem to be playing pretty well.

Thanks for the welcome!

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

I like the game threads, and many times we go weeks without one because some schools don't have much of a base here.
Serious discussion and good humored debate is always welcome in the Vermont threads!

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

I too have been mostly a reader and seldom a poster but would like to add a thought. I am also incredibly disappointed and frustrated with the season. Been to a few games this season and always watch the televised games. One thing I notice that nobody has brought up is how horrible the forwards play defense. I am not trying to say that it is ALL the forwards fault, I thought our seniors back there would be doing a much better job but it has to be frustrating for them too. It seems the defense has their guy tied up and the trailer scores, or somebody sneaks in from the point and the forward is not covering them. I know there are a lot of underclassmen up there but this is basic stuff, I think our forwards are really making our defense look much worse than it is.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Can it get worse. Ryan's blog reports we lost Miller and Marshall. Wow any predictions on lines this weekend. This will be fun to see. Does Sneddon skate Lance Herrington at forward and play Greim. Does he skate Brooks with Albertson and Leonard and leave Greim as the only healthy scratch? I feel pretty confident he will shake up the top lines as well. Defensive corps must be better. MMacks first goal Friday was on a Miller blind pass on his backhand off the wall, instead of just getting it out. Saturday a midget could have stood in front of Madore and had ample opportunities as our d didn't clear anyone. Also, did anyone notice that our D are frequently on the same side and oftern behind the net. Am I missing something, who is clearing and patrolling the front? Need 3 this weekend.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

I think we just doubled our total goal output in the past previous 3 games with tonight's win. [Insert snide BC or lowell comment here] At least UMass lost tonight, so uvm is only 2 points out of the 7 seed.

7 goals for the Cats and THUNDERSNOW both in the same night. I must have died and gone to heaven.

Maybe all the liberals will evactuate the state before midnight and my dreams will have been answered.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

For a 3rd straight week we had a close game on Friday and a 6 goal blowout on Saturday, at least we got the better end for a change. Did everyone
else feel like we were watching a replay of last weeks Saturday's game but with different colored uniforms. The best part of the game is that 7 players
scored which should give them some hope going up to a struggling Maine next week.

Shumlin is still there. Sorry but some dreams just aren't meant to be. I was loving your dream.

This game was finally one where everything every bounce every player got involved. This might relieve some of the "squeezing the stick too tight." If we can steal two points next weekend there is a chance that could lead to a chance for fifth looking at schedules of UMass and Northeastern.

That's certainly possible, but I'd be happy with just a playoff spot at this point. They did look hungrier last night and they capitalized on every single chance they had. That hasn't happened (aside from the U-18 game) all year. We need more of this!

Well, maybe Shummy will cough up some dough for a new arena, afterall he brought that magic pot of money to the state house with him. Let's look at the bright side:D

I agree, I would be happy with a playoff spot. Nice to see a game where things went right for a change. A 3 point weekend was desperately needed, and it was nice to see everyone chip in. Glad to see Griems get some playing time, as well as the line changes. I think putting the frosh line together is good, let them gel as well.

Agree on the line changes also. I think McCarthy & Stalberg need to stay together they seem to play well together. Leave Decenzo there as well now we have two lines gelling for next year too.

We should move Franzon to offense. He is this year's Burrows...............jk

Cats get another forward for next year, presumably to replace Pacan?

http://blogs.burlingtonfreepress.com/oncampus/2011/02/08/hockey-cats-add-a-mountain/

That brings in next years class as :

Forwards :

Kyle Mountain 9g 14a - 23p in 54 games
Zemgus Girgensons 14g 13a - 27p in 29 games
Colin Markison 6g 7a - 13p in 36 games
Mike Montagna 8g 12a 20p in 34 games

Defensemen:
Blake Doerring 0g 8a - 8p 34 games
Nick Luukko 4g 3a - 7p in 22 games
Mike Paliotta 0g 4a - 4p in 18 games

Losses will include :

Downing, Stacey (already gone), Burrows, Leonard

Medvec, Miller, Lawson

Looks like there is room due to the departure of Pacan for another forward. Considering the lack of offense this season, the Cats really could use to add another pure offensive forward to the ranks. And, Sneddon needs to over the summer sacrafice a chicken or something to get rid of the bad mojo around Marshall. As a senior next year Marshall really needs to score. He has good speed and energy. Handles the puck well, but just can not seem to get the puck past a goaltender....any goal tender.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

The only way we win either of these games this weekend are if madore stands on his head and if the offense can actually produce like they did against providence last saturday.

I can see the first one happening. The second one, not so much.....especially since they're on the road against a PO'd Maine team. I envision a 0 or 1 point weekend. Anything better than that would be a big success.

Wow. Nice to see character. Team really seems to have responded. Tension may have been lifted. Let's keep it up.

Leonard coming back next year. Has a year of eligibility and he's gonna use it.
