The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

i watched the BC-UNH game on fri night. UNH looked horrendous. Could have been a 10-0 shutout. Perhaps it's because BC is so good, or maybe, that UNH takes a night off once and a while, and is beatable. Let's hope they do the same next Friday night.

FHL team expanding to Vermont. Will play at Jay Peak as home ice... Not sure if this will affect plans for a new arena or not. I remember at one time they were talking about an expansion team being an anchor tenant at the arena when it was proposed to be build on the football field, but that was before this league was even started...

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Wow that was some powder. Last year VT finished 8th but was not far out of home ice, this year they finished 7th and were eliminated from home ice weeks ago. This is not the same dangerous team that gave Wisconsin a good game in the tourney last year.

I do hope they are more competitive next year, I think they will be. No where to go but up now....

Still on the first thread? Come on UVM fans you are better than that!

All the best against UNH this weekend.

Cheers.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

I apparently have too much time on my hands,

After searching the box scores and comparing the attendance of all the HE teams, it appears that UVM has the highest % attendance for the season at almost 97%. UNH comes in second. The astericks is that the final games attendance isn't listed, so being senior night I plugged in a sell out, although I'm not entirely sure what it actually was. For arguments sake even if it were the lowest attendance of the season they would still be the top in % attendance.

I think Vermont is going to have a strong season next year, the team is looking good, or at the least the parts sticking around for another season. But that can wait for an Off-season thread. Go Cats GO!!

The Gutt is also the 3rd smallest arena in the league (1k seats more than Merrimack + PC).

Was a bit surprised during the UVM-UNH weekend when looking at the ceiling - there were banners for things like Olympic participants, players from the ECAC years, etc. but didn't see one for the 1996 ECAC Regular Season, did I just miss it?
Anyone?

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Is there any way we can watch the game on tv/computer without paying for it tonight?

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Actually about 1500 more then MC, 1000 more then PC. It also has the 4th lowest enrollment in the league. It also had a terrible season.

It was also 5th in overall attendence despite being in a small town with the 3rd smallest arena limiting capacity. They also sold out over half the games (8 in 14) tied for most sellouts with MC and UNH.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

actually thought uvm was the better team tonight just couldn't cash in on their opportunities, Digirolomo (sp) did play great. effort was there, passing was there, bring the same game sat night and force a game three.

I was also satisfied with the team's effort, they generated a lot of quality offensive chances but they could not bury them. It just seemed like many of the shots were either blocked by the UNH defensemen or we just didn't get a quality shot off in prime scoring areas.

I watched the video feed, but did not have a good look at the play when Bruneteau went headfirst into the boards before UNH's first goal. Did he lose an edge or did a UNH player hit him from behind?

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

looked like he may have been trying to sell it a little but was definitely hit from behind, not violently but hit nonetheless, which in that situation 3 feet from the boards going in head first a referee has to make that call. play goes on, he is down in corner, finally struggles to get up but can't recover to pick up Thompson in slot (his man if he's not down or they make the call) and Thompson buries it. I will say the Desenzo line forwards didn't help Bruno out much in picking up Thompson .....can't let him occupy the slot unfettered.

i like Sneddon's comment regarding the goalie duel, .....but this is far from over, .......don't know if they win or not tonight but that's what you want to hear out of the coach.....this is far from over.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

I'm hopeful for significant improvement next season over the disappointment of this year, but it will be the year after that, if they have goaltending, that should be interesting.

I hope that Girgensons arrives in September and is not pushed out a year for academics (I believe he is trying to accelerate academically this year to arrive in the fall)

While he won't be as effective coming in that young it probably gives us an extra year of him assuming he will leave early under either scenario if his development continues

We need another Torrey Mitchell or Scott Mifsud to gel the offense around

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Like many games versus good teams this year Vermont 5 on 5 can play with anyone, but until we get a PP that scars someone and also find a way to get back
to the penalty kill we had a few years ago we will continue to be a average team. Last night 0-5 while UNH 1-1 says it all. Even when the effort is there the
finishing isnt. I like the improvement we have seen from the freshman over the last month and with only Downing & Burrows leaving the offense has to get better
right?

It's been a while since UVM's had a freshman come in and make an immediate impact like Torrey Mitchell. We're due! Why stop there--why not hope for someone like Marty St. or Eric Perrin, or both?

Was there ever an official announcement re Leonard? Is he coming back for sure?

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Had a family trip planned for Boston this weekend and convinced the wife and kids to go to Friday night's BU vs Northeastern game at BU. First time I have been to Agginis which is realy nice. Not too fancy (no carving stations like at Denver) but really nice. Such a bummer that HE quaterfinals always fall on spring break for the students. The place was a bit more than half full. Saw the highlights of Sat' s UVM v UNH game and the Whitt looked empty (ok less than full). You fight all year long for home ice and than the place is empty. Which is what makes the Gutt fairly special. As I remember when we last hosted HE Quaters if was full (against Mass L.?) Pulling for Merrimack at this point. No. 1 seed Boston College will face No. 6 seed Northeastern on Friday at 5pm and No. 2 seed UNH will faceoff with No. 4 seed Merrimack. Watched Merrimack take it to Maine on NESN on Sat night. Chippy game - which is I guess is what folks say about Merrimack. I want to see UNH go down so the story line continues that they choke in post season play.

I agree with your point, but keep in mind that the 3,332 in attendance on Saturday would have nearly filled the Gutt (capacity: 4,007).

Wouldn't there have to be some expectation that they should win for them to "choke"? BC are the likely favorites, not UNH. I guess it's better than the story line of seldom making it and never winning it, we left the ECAC in '84 and still have one more ECAC tournament title than Vermont.

It would barely be over capcity... yes the gutt is small but let's not get carried away. It's a poor showing, and by and large due to timing. UNH averaged over 6000/game. So 3332 is disappointing to say the least, spring break or not.

Is UNH expected to win against MC? Anyways, good luck to UNH, don't worry about 4035 he has his opinion. Not everyone shares it. I hope you guys win, because frankly the I find the whole "University of No Hardware" to be childish and just plain stupid. It's almost as bad as "sucks to BU" the unoriginality of today's fans is disturbing.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Agreed. but part of my point is I would rather have a medium to small sized barn that is almost always full - than a big barn that has empty seats. I have been to several post season games now (NCAA and HE) where the rink in half to 3/4th full and it is depresssing as a fan of the game. Which gets into the whole conversation regarding where the first round of the NCAA's ought to be played. I am starting to feel like top 8 teams should get home ice for best of 3. You would get full barns - If not during spring break. -- but alas it will probably never happen. Went to Albany NY - last year for first round.. it was awful.
