The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

JC I think you had your green colored glasses on when viewing that hit. It was clearly from behind with the intent to check him.

I'll disagree. Brickley was carrying some momentum and definitely crushed him. He was intending to check him and did so. But as I remember it he got him more from the side then behind. I can't find a video on it so we can agree to disagree.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Is it me or is Franzon going through the motions? Seems to me he is really lacking some hustle and just isn't the same player he was as a Frosh. I wonder if with the injuries he is of the mind he doesn't have to work and is secure in ice time by default?

The two 5 min hitting from behind calls were a joke. Brickley's wasnt even hitting from behind, just looked bad. Downing's definitely was but Noonan turned into, had he not turned it wouldn't have been. It's almost like he was actually positioning himself to get the call. Moreover, he was smiling about it afterwards as Downing was heading off the ice. I'm all for protecting players, but if you are going to put yourself in position for it there shouldn't be a call, no different then diving.

Franzon is playing with a shoulder injury that if there were any more available D, he would be out rehabbing.

Just thinking out loud here....some teams, BU, BC and Maine in particular, seem to have enough skill guys that practice time probably is boring for them. So perhaps they spend some of that practice time learning the "advanced" skill of diving - that is, making it look legit to the officials. Whereas teams like the Cats, with a lesser number of skill guys, have to actually work on their skills during practice time???

Maybe some schools help get the players enough credits by putting them in Drama classes.

Are the Cats finally going to beat the lowly Redhawks?
Funny how the Cats crapped out last year in the final RS series but backed into the playoffs and then beat top seeded UNH. This year the Cats have a whole lot less points though so big difference between being 8th last year and 7th or 8th this year......

Recruiting is looking encouraging though. I'm already ready for next year

What is the story on injured seniors? Any returning this weekend or are they doing senior night with stretchers?

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Was a bit surprised during the UVM-UNH weekend when looking at the ceiling - there were banners for things like Olympic participants, players from the ECAC years, etc. but didn't see one for the 1996 ECAC Regular Season, did I just miss it?

Miller should be back for at least one game, Marshall should be back for both games. Not sure what to think of the returns. I think Griems has done a decent job, I hope he remains to get some ice time. Marshall... well I just don't understand him. He has good speed, good puck skills, plays hard...but he can't score for anything. Right now the lines seem to be playing pretty well. Not sure if you reinsert him or not. I have to imagine he will be on the ice, he can skate and move the puck. Medvec remains out and will not play.

Anyone have an opinion if we match up better against BC or UNH assuming we will get one or the other in the playoffs based on the current standings? It is tough call.....

I don't particularly like the prospect of playing either one of them. You could argue either really though. The success last year in Madore shutting down UNH and their obvious lack of success in the post season. On the other hand I do think UVM seems to play BC tough. They have held their own against BC. I think MC would be the preferable team.

That said, according to my predictions with the what if calculator UVM is mostly likely headed to Comm Ave for a first round match up against BC. Tough part with that is UVM hasn't seen BC since November and Jerry usually has BC tuned this time of year.

Regardless, much like last year being a 7th-8th seed there are very few expectations and UVM can go out on the ice and play as the spoiler with nothing to lose.

Uh Oh ...

Federal researchers declare eastern cougar extinct

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Wednesday declared the eastern cougar to be extinct, confirming a widely held belief among wildlife biologists that native populations of the big cat were wiped out by man a century ago.

After a lengthy review, federal officials concluded there are no breeding populations of cougars — also known as pumas, panthers, mountain lions and catamounts — in the eastern United States. Researchers believe the eastern cougar subspecies has probably been extinct since the 1930s.

They say that every year. However, people seem to see them and tracks turn up from time to time.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

I'm not sure that either of these guys coming back from injury is going to do much. They were playing as well without them as they were with them earlier in the year.

Question: I noticed that Madore has a 9-11 tribute painted on his helmet. Does he have a connection to any of those events?

How could this even be a question?

Let's see, the team that seems to go nuts on everyone in the postseason (that UVM hasn't beaten in the playoffs since joining HE) or the team that falls on their face in the playoffs every single year?

You want to play UNH.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

"Ice chips: Saturday will the Seniors’ Night for Catamounts Kyle Medvec, Kevan Millar, Dan Lawson, Josh Burrows, Jack Downing and Brett Leonard. Leonard, from South Burlington, has a year of eligibility remaining but has not decided whether he will return. ... Sophomore Riley Wetmore of Swanton leads UML in goals (13), assists (15, tied) and points (28)."

From the BFP article today.

Two notes : Leonard will be honored as a senior but hasn't made a decision to return or not.

My thoughts are this, if he stands on the ice as a senior, he is on his way out at the end of the year. I personally don't see Leonard staying for another year and racking up a few more thousand dollars in tuition bills simply to play another year of hockey. And I doubt the team has available scholarships. But stranger things have happened.

Note 2: The top scorer from UML is a Vermonter..... oh why oh why do both teams have to be at the bottom of the barrel. That could have been such good fodder if they were fighting for the top, or even home ice.

What are peoples thoughts in Wahs not being honored? I am kind of on the fence. On the one hand he quit, and honoring someone that quit on the team is kind of contrary to the entire purpose. On the other hand he was there for 3.5 years lacing them up and for the most part skating hard...

Obviously it isn't going to happen, but I was curious as to others thoughts on it.

The BFP doesn't say Leonard will be honored. It merely states Leonard is a senior. The UVM website specifically says who will be honored and Leonard isn't one of them. He will be back.

How could you consider Wahs being honored. That would be a slap in the face to the guys that fought through adversity. He bailed. Think how much better the team has played. If Wahs didn't quit and did what he was expected to do then maybe this team has a few more points and better position. You never honor a quitter.

Who is your soure for this info. Seems as I provided a quote from a source that says Saturday will be senior night for among other Brett Leonard. It also says he has not decided upon returning. You seem very positive about this, where's your info.

You need to chill dude, I wasn't advocating it. I was asking for peoples thoughts.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

You can't honor a guy who QUIT the team. That would make NO sense.

The Cats always seem to take the last weekend of the season off, they don't have much to play for (can't get higher than 7th) but I hope they bring it anyway to gain a little retribution and get ready for the playoffs.....

If Leonard loves to play hockey, which seems to be the case based on his excellent work ethic, AND has any masters degree aspirations then he might well be back although it is an expensive endeavor....

I hope he comes back.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

I agree, you absolutely cannot honor Wahs Stacey. For me, that's one of the things I found so baffling about him quitting. I don't know what was going on, but if he had just toughed it out for another couple of months he could basked in the glow of senior night, and hung up his skates as one of the more beloved Catamounts of his his era. Now he'll just be remembered as a quitter. Too bad.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

I see on the uvm athletic site it shows a photo of 5 seniors to be honored this weekend, Leonard is not in the photo which to me means it will come out within the ceremony that Leonard has elected to come back for that year of eligibility he has.....not a shocker and will be great for next years team.

I know Marshall is due back this weekend but I have to tell you I've loved the 4th line of Leonard-Albertson-Brooks Herrington. Every game they are giving them energetic shifts and are controlling the puck along the wall in the offensive zone. I assume he would replace Brooks but Brooks has played great and his size and strength are a factor that will lead to production in due time. With Miller back either Griem or Lance Herrington will sit, both have filled in nicely and Griem gets better each game. A positive sign that I've seen over the past couple weeks is that with losing so many on the blueline there is plenty coming back coupled with another good class next year.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

some great series coming next weekend, maine at merrimack, northeastern at BU, should be great. I know unh will have revenge on their mind and certainly won't take uvm lightly based on last year but I think uvm has a decent shot again this year. If they would have drawn BC I wouldn't feel nearly as optimistic. It's a whole new season starting Friday.
