hands down the worst game they played so far this year, feel bad for those who took the trip west. net play was poor, defense was ugly, not much flow to the offense. vazzano pulled after 1 was surprising, can only think coaches thought the team was playing so poor defensively in front of him they didn't want to throw him to the wolves for 60 minutes. madore wasn't ready to step in. medvec and mackenzie were out of lineup, griem only got about 2 shifts, burrows actually played D in the third period. albertson played well, marshall as well but both of them probably saw the least amount of ice time. time away from hockey can only help at this point, maybe look at starting the season from scratch when they get back at it.

Worst game by far, can't be a good bus ride back to Burlington. Goalie change made little sense but very little makes sense with this team. If you bring a kid (Griem) into your program, he doesn't play (although is would be difficult with the upperclassmen) and then only gets 2-3 shifts....wow! Burrows was playing D in the 2nd period, which meant some forwards did not see much ice time as Burrows was centering the 2nd line at the start of the game. Time away....yes, might help but really wondering about the exhibition game - who are they playing and will they struggle with that team too??

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

also, i don't think i've ever questioned coaching decisions before but can't for life of me figure out why they didn't pull goalie in the latter part of the 5 minute powerplay towards the end to make it 6 on 4, they waited til' after the powerplay was over. they got 2 weak shots in that 5 minute powerplay, a powerplay that was a golden opportunity to get it tied up. (5 minute pp came with i think 6:20 left), pulled madore with like 50 seconds left down 2...should have pulled him with about 3 to 3:30 to go down 2 and on a 5 min pp.

post game comment, we were hoping alex could play the whole game but he let up a couple soft one's and didn't want him to lose confidence. ...so, pulling him after one period in his first collegiate start after giving up 2 soft one's is supposed to keep his confidence high? ....should have let him gather himself between periods, breath a little, and get back out there in the second to see if he could rebound. could have made it well known in the locker room between periods to the entire team that defensively they were letting a freshman goalie down in his first start by playing squirt-like defense. would have slammed the door and left the room at that point leaving it up to the players to motivate each other for the second period.

i see a lot of very poor angling with this team both on the forecheck and their approach to defense. it seems slight but it makes a huge difference on how the play will develop...or fall apart.

Ouch

"We had hoped Alex would play the whole game but the first two were pretty soft and we didn't want him to lose confidence," said Sneddon of relieving his freshman. "We were also trying to spark the team defensivey, we played so poorly, but we didn't get any better defensivley."

I am usually one of Sneddon's biggest supporters, but this really doens't make much sense to me. We've seen Rob get hung out for 6+ goals and Vazzano gives up 2 on 13 shots and he's done. Rob then gives up 4 on 17, so clearly either both goalies were horrendous or the D was hanging them out to dry, I would go with the latter.

Glad to hear Sneddon move Burrows back to D. He hasn't shown nearly the scoring touch he had last year and he has been getting lots of ice time on the top lines. There are other forwards that could benefit from that ice time. That and the it appears the D needs some help.

In case Sneddon was wondering :

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

I've been a pretty big supporter of Sneddon and I still am. He has raised the level of the program and clearly the expectations for the team, look at his disappointed we all are. That said, something has to change with the team and drastically. Outside of Wahs and Bruneteau ( who expected a freshman D to be the 3rd leading scorer on the team) no one is performing to expectations, and I don't think the expectations were too high. Stalberg has come on as of late so he after a dismal first few games he seems to be into the game. But outside of those three players I'm not sure anyone is where they should/could be.

Looking back in time at the top scorers/dissappointments :

Downing 2011 ( 0.4ppg) 2010 (0.6ppg) 2009 0.4ppg)
- despite a very significant increase in TOI his point production is at the same levels as in 2009 ?

McCarthy 2011 ( 0.4ppg) 2010 (0.5ppg)
- he is performing worse then as a frosh despite the year of experience and more quality ice time

Burrows 2011 (0.27 ppg) 2010 (0.23ppg) 2009 (0.38ppg)

- he is scoring the same or less as a forward then when he was a defensman, everyone was excited with his play last year once moved to forward but that was clearly a fluke, move him back to the D. A solid defenseman with an offensive skill set would prove invaluable at this point. And he is simply taking ice time from forwards that really couldn't do any worse at this point.

Miller 2011 ( 0.13ppg) 2010 ( 0.28ppg) 2009 (0.2ppg)
- Miller was never an offensive D-man but something isn't going his way here. Putting too much pressure on himself to over perform? I don't know, he is giving it his all on the ice, but perhaps trying too much...

Medvec 2011 ( 0.07ppg) 2010 (0.4ppg) 2009 (0.31ppg)
- perhaps the biggest disappointment this year may come from Kyle. The one player thought to leave early has become almost non-existent this year on the ice. Out with an injury now, the question becomes how long has that injury been nagging him if at all? And can he get healthy and contribute again as in past seasons.

Not sure the answer but the captains and coaching staff needs to really deliver a message, and I think it starts with some time on the pine to consider what individual players are doing for their team. No matter who it is. We have seen Wahs as a healthy scratch and Wahs has been carrying the team... possibly time for Downing and/or McCarthy to sit out a weekend. Granted this team is not that deep but Albertson has filled in nicely and as an underclassmen it would probably be beneficial for him to see an increase in ice time over an under performing senior.

Just my $0.02

Here is a youtube video showing a hit by our '11/'12 recruit Zemgus Girgensons:

This was during the Divison 1 World Junior championship in Belarus, where Latvia qualified for the top level of the World Junior Championships (US, Canada, Sweden, etc) next year. He was the 2nd leading scorer for Latvia as a 16 year old. Here is a wrap-up of the tournament:

Looking forward to seeing him on the Gutterson ice next year! (if he completes his high school requirements which he accelerated this year). He is slated to be a 1st/2nd round pick in the NHL draft in 2012.

A scorer that hits....thanks for the much needed Xmas gift of hope to the VT fans

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

This team is really disappointing...... But I guess given that they played poorly in conference last season it should not be a huge surprise.

Hopefully they get it going, but there is no reason to be confident that I can see.

I guess this is what it's like to be a UML fan.....

Cats put a 7 spot on the US national university team. Nice to see the points, let's hope the D can get it together so the offensive efforts pay off in the second half. The Cats have put up 17 goals in the past 3 games, and while that has been an exhibition and 2 ECAC teams, it's a much needed change. Now the D needs to crack down.
