The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award

Re: The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award

No, that's not what I meant.

The announcement has been made.

I just watched part of Carpenter giving her acceptance speech.

Re: The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award

Congratulations to Carpenter. Well-deserved and certainly not surprising. it's hard to know, without more inter league play, how her stats stack up against Brandt's. It would be fun, as a WCHA fan, to see more of these great eastern players.

Agree with every point of that, particularly the desire to see more interleague play.

Carpenter did what she needed to do to win the award so she deserved it (though as a Midwesterner I always assume an East Coast bias in all things, particularly the awards thing). Listening to her acceptance speech I only objected to one thing, she said she was happy the way things worked out (her winning, BC not) If that is true I would be very disapointed in her. Hockey is a team sport & I would rather win a championship than to be the MVP.

That isn't how I took her statement in context. I think she meant it more as she wouldn't have wanted to accomplish what she did with any other team or group of teammates. Any other interpretation is contrary to what I believe I know of Alex Carpenter.

Re: The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award

if you cannot see that Hannah Brandt is the first player you would want if picking a team from all the college players you must be blind

That could be, I assume she was making one of those little white lies we all engage in from time to time because she didn't want to admit her disappointment. I was trying to be a bit light-hearted about her talk, probably would have worked better in person where you could have seen I was smiling. I personally would not know where to begin choosing between those 3 they all deserve recognition.

Re: The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award

You could make the argument that Brandt and Carpenter were on teams that were very deep in talent, so both had great supporting casts to help generate points. Poulin was on a much less talented team and still had a fantastic season. If its about the points then they got it right . I think all three of these players were very deserving of the top 3 nominations. Congratulations to all three for a great season. On a side note 3-1 score tomorrow in the final. Harvard Wins!!!! Goaltending will prevail.

Re: The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award

If I recall correctly, Alex had been talking about what great teammates she had and then mentioned the loss and then said she wouldn't have it any other way. I thought the sentence structure could have been a little better, but I think she meant she would rather lose with her current teammates than have won with another team. She seems to be a real class act.

Re: The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award

Ready to contemplate the 2016 nominees?

Kendall Coyne
Ann-Renée Desbiens
Dani Cameranesi
Annie Pankowski
Hannah Brandt

I'll let the BC folks suggest their nominees

Others from the CHA, HE...ECAC?

Honestly in my opinion it's Coyne's to lose. Otherwise Carpenter, followed by Skarupa.

there's a player on brooky's list who is on pace to break two NCAA individual records, and by pretty healthy margins. And it isn't any of those you mentioned...

I don't think Pankowski is deserving to be on the list. She is not as dominant as Knight, Ammerman or Duggan were, so she's not there yet. She has to get to their level to be under consideration. ARD is absolutely deserving to be on the list.

Re: The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award

Just me thinks that all the WCHA posters have their rose coloured glasses on for their players.

I generally talk about goaltending

Specifically goaltending.

I looked at the top GAA and Top Save% goalies in NCAA, and here is what I found:

The only goalies which have 10 or more games with 25+ shots in the game are Whitlinger (10/16) 63% of games played, Maschmeyer (11/14) 70%, Mowat (12/25) 48%, Chuli (12/15) 80%, Selander (16/22) 73%, Dodds (18/25) 725, and M. Black (22/23) 96%.

Top Tiered goalies from rankings -

Desbian (3/24) 13%
Burt (5/21) 24%
Leveille (1/19) 5%
Rossman (3/25) 12%
Tiley (3/24) 13%

Does anyone out there know goaltending?

If you asked MJ or BF or KK from the top 3 over many beers and you were sworn to secrecy, they would let you know who they would prefer in net for the final game - NCAA. If your a reporter or a troll, they would tell you all you want to hear about how much of a team player their current goalie is and how much trust they have in them and they come up with the big saves when needed, but when it really comes down to it (the semi's or championship game) each one of those caches are having a sleepless night before the game because they are praying that their goalie on the top 3 teams doesn't crater.

Think hard posters, would you bank your house on the top 3 goalies when they have to face the likes of the other 2 top offences in the country. If I'm MJ and we line up against BC in the final, I just hope we can score a lot and vice versa for KK. I give UM almost no chance of winning unless they do get a Kessel back.

If you look at shots/game again here is how it plays out for top 5 teams IMO:

Rossman 22.9 SOG/Game
Burt 21.3
Tiley 19.5
Desbian 18.6
Leveille 17.7

If I were to rank these goalies I would take them in the order presented.

Teams ramp up on offence and clamp down on defense if they have concerns and I believe that UW, UM, and BC all do have concerns about the goaltending position.

Now if you asked me who would I trade out my goalie for this would be a tougher question?

I see ECAC plenty but not enough of M Black. From an ECAC standpoint it would be Maschmeyer, Newell and Tiley or M Black (she is averaging 39.2 SOG's with a .935 Save% - kind of amazing).

Other leagues?? Benzie, Mowat, Whitlinger, Dodds, Selander, Chuli ????

I swear to you, for sure UW and UM's coaches lose sleep thinking about their goaltending. Better bring the offence to beat BC. And I also think BC's coach would not like to have 30 plus shots on her goalie in a big game with big time shooters!!

Quit looking at SO's or wins, try to look at the real #'s. Most NCAA coaches really don't know goaltending so I can't hold a poster responsible .

I like that folks think Minnesota has little to no shot...

The Wisconsin goalie has been lights out. Ask most any Wisconsin fan from this past weekend who the difference maker was in Wisconsin winning two close games with UND and many would say Desbiens.

This does seem like Coyne's year to win.

Sounds like a WCHA gaga fan.

Did a further check Coyne, Carpenter and Skarupa have failed to point on Maschmeyer in their 1 game appearance against Harvard this year.

Checked further and Carpenter has 5 goose eggs vs Maschmeyer in 7 games vs Maschmeyer over the years (3 years due to the Olympic year).

Carpenter had 10 shots on net last game and not a tally or helper vs Harvard?

Keep believing that Desbian is the one. My guess is that if you play BC or Clarkson in the final you'll be looking at Desbian with a 4 GAA for the game.

Sleepless nights for MJ!

Re: The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award

There was another goalie from "la Belle Province" named "Red Light Racicot", similar styles.

Sleepless in Madison. haha

Coyne right now. I get suspicious of goaltenders on elite teams, especially when all the back-up goalies have the same stats.
