The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award

Re: The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award

Eddie Johnston (backup goalie to Esposito and Dryden in the '72 Summit Series)

Patrick Roy

I actually remembered one, Cheevers was I think both a goalie and a coach but this sort of thing does not stick in my brain. I knew you guys would have a list.

Does that mean I'm supposed to contribute? Okay, Jim Scanlan.

Bob Deraney - Providence
Brian Durocher - BU
Dave Flint - Northeastern

This would be my chance to say "Well, I meant successful coach!" :) :D

Re: The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award

Well, how about Lester Patrick who coached the New York Rangers over Montreal to win the Stanley Cup. In one of these games when his regular goalie was injured he suited up at age 44 and stopped 18 of 19 Montreal shots and the Rangers won in overtime. Okay, it was his only game as a goalie, but not bad though.

Re: The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award

A follow up on Save %.

Did a quick analysis of of Save % for the top 5 goalies in the NCAA in this category. They are Desbian .966, Maschmeyer .951, Burt .950, Rossman .949, and Newell .945.

In terms of games played that they had 25 shots or more here is what I found:

Top 5 Goalies based on Save %
Shots More than 25
Goalie Goals Saves Shots Save % Ave Save % 25 Shots + 30 Shots +
ARD 1 84 85 98.82% 0.966 3 0
Maschmeyer 25 440 465 94.62% 0.951 14 12
Burt 6 153 159 96.23% 0.95 5 4
Rossman 1 83 84 98.81% 0.949 3 0
Newell 16 295 311 94.86% 0.945 10 5

Games with 15 or less shots against:

Shots Less than 15
Goalie Goals Saves Shots Save % Ave Save % 15 Shots Games -
ARD 2 75 77 97.40% 0.966 7
Maschmeyer 0 0 0 #DIV/0! 0.951 0 (no games with 15 or less shots)
Burt 3 83 86 96.51% 0.95 7
Rossman 8 119 127 93.70% 0.949 11
Newell 1 12 13 92.31% 0.945 1

Notes:

It looks like the most dangerous time for goalies to give up goals is between the 16 to 24 shot/game range. %'s are generally better at 15 or below and 25 and above, and that the 16 to 24 hurt their averages.

Also, Maschmeyer has had no 15 shot games and Newell has had only one.

Rossman has 11 with ARD and Newell have 7 each.

Rossman and ARD have had no 30 shot games this season. If I were MJ (UW) or CT (Q), I would try to simulate getting 35 shots in a game, since if you play a BC in the 1/4's or finals they won't see just 20 shots.

Make it easy. Just post the goalie's most impressive box scores where she stole games.

UW plays great D in front of ARD, I don't think she's see anything close to 30 against BC, UW held UM to 23 and 24 shots in the first matchup.

And the thing you won't see in the St. Cloud box score from this last weekend is that she was 4 for 4 on stopping clean breakaways. Gold, Jerry, Gold!

I concur, but just to be safe, it would be a good idea to give the Brandt line a few odd man rushes when they meet in Mpls to simulate the Carpenter line, and again if they meet in the NCAA.
And the Badger blueline should fire a few shots on goal themselves to get her over 25 and just to keep her on her toes. You wouldn’t want to find out in the NCAA finals that Desbiens gets tired after 25 shots.

These are all valid ideas. I will tweet this to Jackie Friesen and she will propose it to MJ. I'm impressed you are looking out for WI's longterm health as a team this season. I'm always kinda hoping Brandt steps on a snowy curb wrong and has a minor injury. You are a better person than I.

Re: The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award

I was looking purely at points since the New Year and was somewhat surprised by the top 20 (stats from http://www.hockeyeastonline.com/sta...on&so=on&jr=on&sr=on&stats=scoring&sort=pts):

Code:
1 Kendall Coyne Northeastern 15 14 29
2 Denisa Křížová Northeastern 8 12 20
3 Hayley Scamurra Northeastern 6 9 15
4 Alex Carpenter Boston College 7 7 14
     Jordan Krause Northeastern 2 12 14
6 Haley Skarupa Boston College 8 5 13
     Katie Rooney Rensselaer 7 6 13
     Paige Savage Northeastern 4 9 13
9 Dani Cameranesi Minnesota 6 6 12
     Emily Clark Wisconsin 6 6 12
     Annie Pankowski Wisconsin 3 9 12

13 Karlie Lund Princeton 5 6 11

     Emily Antony Minnesota State 3 8 11

1) HOLY *** LOOK AT NORTHEASTERN

2) Who would have expected the top 20 to include skaters from RPI (at joint 6th!), OSU, Vermont, and Minnesota State? (Thanks UND). And, if you go down to everyone with 10 points, you also take in Cassidy Carels from Providence.

3) Wisconsin are a depth team, so only two skaters in the top 20 isn't that surprising. But to see only two from Minnesota as well is unexpected, and backs up my feeling that Minnesota have dropped off a bit (although who knows what will happen this weekend).

Interesting. Curtis and Boucher from UNH have been hot too - 7 points a piece with only 5 games in 2016. The Eagles look good in the rear view mirror!

not a real surprise when a team plays only 2 lines and sprinkles in the 3rd once and a while...I assume MN, WI and BC use 3 lines with the 4th sprinkled in.

Brandt didn't play in half of the UM games in January.

I assume MN, WI and BC use 3 lines with the 4th sprinkled in.
Wisconsin plays its 4th line much more than Minnesota does. Particularly in January, UM didn't always have a full 4th line dressed. There are teams like Bemidji State that are deeper and can roll four lines much easier than the Gophers. But your point is correct that all those teams give their third lines regular shifts.

Not a math major, but love numbers. Using a simple model: Weighting 1-3 and 4-6 as 1/6 each and rest of team as 4/6 - I come up with the following for most balanced teams in terms of scoring (considering only the five listed)

1 MN
2 BC
3 WI
4 NE
5 QU
