The new Super League is going down the tubes.

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

Says you. In fact, I pointed out again and again other fans doing this very thing all last season. Some of the worse were Gopher fans.

John Hill is no longer with the Gophers.

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

The club was only accepting membership applications from certified ignorant arrogant a**holes who want to destroy college hockey. Chambers reported it on his blog.

Can you be a bit more vague? What are you talking about? I wasn't being argumentative, I just wanted to hear his opinion. Instead, I get yours. Which is not an even exchange. That's DU, "destroying college hockey" for the last 60+ years. Who does this "certifying" you referenced? You, pipsqueak?

Attempt at sarcasm gone horribly wrong :o I support the crimson and gold through and through.

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

So while it is possible that the Big 4 in Hockey East might leave to form yet another new conference it is unlikely to happen in the next decade.

Sean

Could be.

But there are signs of more going on...

1. ND didn't join the National right away.
2. ND did say something like they were hoping to join a conference with 6 teams.
3. ND said they were not in talks with the Big 10.

So point two alludes to the fact that they are looking at a move (which anyone in their right mind would) and its not the Big 10.

That leaves the National and a Hockey East of sorts. I just wonder if they were going to join the National...why wouldn't they just do it? If they were going to join the Big East, why wouldn't they just do it (in addition to the fact they said they didn't like its size)?

Those facts point to more considerations than what's on the table.

Well, I guess in this case, the "arrogant a*shole" was me. I've put new batteries in my sarcasm detector and should do better next time. Sorry. The absence of quotation marks confused me. :)

Maybe they are waiting for the Pope to give his opinion. ;)

I read that they were waiting to see what happens with the television deal with the National.

Hockey East just extended Joe Bertagna's contract for three more seasons. While it is possible that BU, BC and one or two other schools voted against his contract extension I think that is unlikely. Furthermore, he has stated many times that he wants to expand Hockey East to 12 teams and a 22-game league schedule. Therefore, I think it is more likely that Hockey East will become a 12 team league before any teams split away.

As for Notre Dame, if I recall correctly the statement was that they preferred to be part of a 7 team conference with a 24-game league schedule as that would allow them to schedule 10 non-conference games with BC and B1G teams, among others. A 12-team HE with a 22-game league schedule (including 2 games vs BC) would allow them to schedule 12 non-conference games against B1G and other teams. And as I posted previously, if WMU joined HE as the twelfth team it would give Notre Dame a travel partner for league play.

Why wouldn't they make it 24 games and give everybody a rival?

I said this on Twitter and will expand on it here:

Maybe its sentimentality or regional pride, but I think loyalty means more here in New England than in other parts of the country. BC and BU are not going to desert Providence and Northeastern after they took the chance to form a new league in 1983. Teams out west may value other things more and make moves to match their values...New England isn't like that. I like Hockey East the way it is. We don't need to be adding teams from Indiana or telling schools like UMA, UVM to get lost. In the end HEA may add Notre Dame just because the brand would strengthen the league, but it would really surprise me. I think (hope) that we're immune to the "me first" mentality that seems to have infected so many schools.
Right......the east coast is definitely known for caring about others. This is easily the dumbest thing I have ever read on this forum.

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

Anyone who thinks that BC and likely BU weren't in serious conversations with the NCHC is crazy. Who knows how far the conversations progressed or who pulled the plug on the deal (ADs, Prezs), but these schools were in the mix for a considerable length of time.

Not prior to July 13, according to CC AD Ken Ralph:

Ralph said an offer was never extended to Boston College or Boston University, but the league would certainly listen to any interested program fitting the league’s profile.

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

He's just a school AD, not the league's PR Director.

Right. I think an AD is a fairly trustworthy source, and secondly Colorado Springs is being considered as the new league headquarters. I think I'd trust his opinion over yours. Where did you get your information?

EDIT: Here's another trustworthy source by UND's Brad Schlossman dated July 13, stating:

Boston College and Boston University were not invited, although they would fit the bill of the programs that are in this league

Interest may have been gauged, but it appears no formal offer was even made.

I get my information from the league's PR Director: dgoddard :D
