The MCHA Thread

Re: The MCHA Thread

Despite their record, it would seem as though Finlandia is improving. A split with Lawrence, and they hung tough with Superior. Not a bad two weeks considering how low that program had fallen.

I agree, I think they are a young program moving in the right direction. They are also playing a bunch of freshmen. They should be interesting to watch in the second half. I don't think that Marian or LU should be sleeping on Northland or Finlandia.

A point well taken. Marian and LU know what these two teams bring to the ice. In the second half Marian will host both, while LU hosts Finlandia and travels to Northalnd. One should also note that LU has been playing its share of Freshmen. All 3 goalies that LU has used are freshmen, 2 of their top 7 scores are also freshmen. In addition, they start anywhere between 2 to 4 freshmen on defense.

One of the bright points about the MCHA is that most of the teams feature several underclassmen in key staring roles. This also might be the reason for inconsistant performances by the MCHA teams. If the good recruiting continues this league will grow.:)

You are right on the money. Close to 50% of the scoring leaders and 80% of goaltenders in the MCHA are first and second year players. This is a very promising sign that the MCHA is a conference in transition.
This will translate into wins out of conference, just not as quickly as we'd like to see .:)

You can make the same point (in your last sentence) about most D-3 teams in the country.
Underclassmen contribute right away on most squads. Keeps the talent cycling through the program.

Re: The MCHA Thread

I've been following along here and got interested in all the talk about Lawrence because I can't even remember the last time they beat MSOE. Since I was bored I looked it up and it was 11/15/08 but I also looked at some other things. According to USCHO the coach is 67-72-12 since getting hired which isnt exactly great. If you look where the wins come from you can see he is 57-17-6 against Lake Forest, Crookston, Northland, Finlandia, and Concordia and only 10-55-6 against everyone else which is horrible. Lawrence's last win over Adrian, Marian or MSOE came two years ago and he is 4-37-3 all time against those teams. I'm sorry but 10-55-6 against everyone other than the goof troop? Could someone do worse if they tried? Because of this it makes me wonder where this talk of them getting better is because it sure doesnt look like it and why should us at the top of the MCHA even take them seriously? Sorry if my numbers are off but if they are its only by a game or two. Really though isn't a team that is supposedly on the rise and so much better every year actually supposed to win?

Before you get too cocky on your lofty perch atop the MCHA .......I did some quick checking of my own. 12-39-2 is MSOE's record since 2007 against teams not named Northland, Concordia Wi., Lawrence, Finlandia, and Lake Forest. Is that a record that you are proud of ?

Along the way MSOE had some difficulties with teams you refer to as the "goof troop".
Losses include....Lawrence(2), Finlandia, Lake Forest(3)....Concordia, Wi. managed a tie.
Sorry if my numbers are off,........but if they are it's only by a game or two.

The only MCHA teams that have performed better than anticipated this season are the teams that you refer to as the "goof troop".

The bottom line here is that you need to show a little more respect for, and and a little less arrogance toward the teams in your conference.........because you're not that good.

If my memory serves me right, didn't the 2010 Lake Forest- MSOE Harris Cup 'play-in series' result in the Lake Forest 'goof troop' knocking the almighty MSOE Raiders out of the box? This was done on MSOE's Kern Center ice.:D:eek:

P.S.- and LFC had 16 frosh on their roster that season, of which only 2 still wear the Forester sweater.
P.S#2- Who gave St. Mary's their first win this season after an 0-8 start ??? ;)
P.S. #3- What MCHA powerhouse, with the MCHA player and coach of the year, got pumped 9 to 2 by Marian in the 2011 Harris Cup ?;)

Re: The MCHA Thread

Wow, tell us how you really feel about LU and the goof troop. I think LU has done some good things over the last couple of years. If MSOE wants to look past them, that is their business. I should also point out that, unlike MSOE, Northland managed to take a game from Bethel.

Re: The MCHA Thread

Good weekend for the MCHA !

Adrian splits with UWSP, and Lawrence splits with Augsburg. Not all that bad for their 'Holiday' road trips. :)

Re: The MCHA Thread

The second half of the MCHA season looks to have a number of very contentious games, including some this weekend. Does anyone have any bold predictions as to how the conference will shake out? I am looking at MSOE as the favorite, but a vulnerable favorite at that. I think their NC performance suggests they can be had. I expect Adrian to play their best hockey in the second half. I don't know how Marian and LU figure in at this point. It should be an interesting conference to follow in the second half.

Re: The MCHA Thread

The league title will be all but decided in the next four weeks, and probably over the next three. The schedules for the next 3 weeks:

MSOE:
H-A Marian
A-H Lawrence
@ Adrian

Marian:
A-H MSOE
H Adrian
H Finlandia, with a home-and-home with Lawrence the next weekend

Adrian:
H Lawrence
@ Marian
H MSOE

Lawrence:
@ Adrian
H-A MSOE
@ Northland, with a home-and-home with Marian the next weekend

Believe it or not, it looks like the schedule favors Marian, of all teams. It's a 3-team drag race to the finish line, with Lawrence right on the other three's heels. But if MSOE or Adrian can run the table over the next six games, turn out the lights, as both of them have virtually nothing in their way after the next three weeks.

Re: The MCHA Thread

I agree that the schedule favors Marian. Both of their road games are very short drives. I think we are looking at some coin flips really. Marian and LU tied twice and Adrian and MSOE played two, one-goal games. So either the South is stronger, or the four of these teams should be reasonably competitive with one another and we should have some compelling games the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for the insight but MSOE's performance is not relevant to anything I said. Unlike with MSOE, for five or whatever years now all we hear every year is how much better Lawrence is getting when they aren't. His track record remains completely horrible and will continue to do so. Feel free to keep up the Lawrence drum beat though, it should help them march in place the same as they have been for years.

Re: The MCHA Thread

Well, the first weekend of the gauntlet is complete. Adrian swept Lawrence, which was expected. Marian swept MSOE, which was not expected. The MCHA race made quite the interesting turn this weekend. First place overall is now firmly up for grabs at Marian next weekend.

Don't be deceived by Lawrence's records prior to this season.
I believe I counted 14 freshmen on the program.
They are a spirited bunch. very physical, and they gave Adrian all they could handle in the corners, as well as on the scoreboard. Lawrence fans have good cause for optimism.

One area that the Vikings need to clean up are their penalty minutes per game, where they rank 8th in D3, (over 22 minutes per game).
This stat alone will kill you in big games.

Re: The MCHA Thread

At this point, it looks to me like we'll be seeing the same 4 teams back at Arrington for the Harris Cup. The only team that I could see having any say in this is Northland, and I don't see them getting past Lawrence, given what I saw this weekend.

I agree with your statement. At this point of the season I would feel comfortable saying that Adrian will win the top seed in the South Division and Marian will win the top seed in the North Division. The regular season conference title will probably be decided next weekend. MSOE will take the second South seed and dispatch Concordia (WI) in the Harris Cup Play-in series, unless that Raidneer fellow awoke the wrath of the 'goof troop' gods and MSOE muffs it like they did in 2010 to Lake Forest.:0

The fourth spot is the one still in question and that won't be decided until 6 weeks from now. Lawrence and Northland will essentially be jockeying the next 5 weeks for the home ice advantage for the Harris Cup Play-in series. The first 3 weeks favor Northland as they host Concordia (WI) and Lawrence for two each, before they play two at Finlandia. Lawrence has a home and home with MSOE, two at Northland, and a home and home with Marian. The final two weeks favor Lawrence as they host Finlandia for two, and have a home and home with Lake Forest. Meanwhile, Northland finishes with two at Marian and hosting MSOE for the final two games. If Lawrence takes the second seed they'll finish off Nortland in the play-ins. If Northland takes the second seed it becomes a toss up.

I still think Lawrence will be at the Harris Cup because of better all around team defense and balanced scoring. That is how they beat Northland in their first two meetings, tied Marian twice, gave Adrian fits twice on the road, and how they'll survive the Northland series where ever its held.

Great post ! You nailed it.........and snuck in a nice little shot at "that fellow" in the process.;)
MSOE have to be reeling after the sweep, and Lawrence are very capable of turning this into a streak for the Raiders.

Lawrence would really have to lay an egg to miss out in that 4th playoff spot.
