The MCHA Thread

Re: The MCHA Thread

It's cool that MSOE seems to have had success pulling players from western U.S. junior leagues like the WSHL and NORPAC. While certainly not as strong top to bottom, there are some kids in these leagues who can play. The few who move on to D3 have generally put up monster numbers in juniors. I think Blake Barkwell of Adrian had something ridiculous like 80 goals and 130 pts in his final season in the WSHL.

I wish Utah still had a WSHL team. Watching U18 and ACHA D2 hockey kinda doesn't cut it sometimes...

edit: Whoa, I just learned Park City has an expansion WSHL team. They're winless, but more hockey options are always welcome in these parts!

What's wrong with ACHA D2? It seems the majority of college hockey I see these days is ACHA D2 :p

No offense, but watching Utah vs BYU in ice hockey isn't quite the same as watching Lindenwood play Penn State. ACHA D2 is probably better in the midwest and east too.

We've also got an ECHL team. Thirsty Thursday's are fun, other than that it can be kinda weird being one of a couple hundred people watching a game in an arena that seats 10,000. The atmosphere is a little different from when I watched USA vs. Russia in the same arena during the '02 Olympics.

Who manages the conference website?
Still talking about the opening weekend games from last week.
Come on Man!!!!

Re: The MCHA Thread

I hereby reserve judgement on the top 3 until I see Adrian play the U-18 team in late October. I've got a rough idea, but I need to see a couple things first.

From 4-8:
4) Lawrence
5) Northland
6) Lake Forest
7) Finlandia
8) Concordia

Tonight was the night I was waiting for before I finished this. After what I saw tonight, I think I can call this race now. My top three, in order:

1) Adrian
2) Marian
3) MSOE

Adrian beat the U-18s tonight 6-4. The man in net for the U-18's allegedly committed to Michigan on Thursday evening, and if that is the case, will likely be in goal in Ann Arbor next season. As for MSOE and Marian, the #2-3 spots are a coin toss, and as it relates to division seeding, does not matter.

This league is Adrian's to lose.

Re: The MCHA Thread

Thoughts and prayers to Northland's Nick Hewko, who suffered a nasty leg injury in the 3rd period of the Adrian-Northland game. Game was held up ~15-20 minutes to tend to his injury.

I have been told by a reliable source that Nick Hewko broke his leg when he fell awkwardly into the boards. :(

That can't be good. I hope he is feeling better. The MCHA has its first big conference match-up this weekend and I haven't a clue as to who is going to win these two games. It should be good hockey one way or another.

Yes, yes he did. It was not pleasant. *shakes head*

I was following the puck, when out of the corner of my eye I saw him go into the boards and heard one helluva thump. I don't know how he went it, as I was not following that part of the ice overly close. The way he was moving immediately after the collision, I knew right away he was in trouble.

Tonite's final from Appleton: Marian 2 Lawrence 2 OT
Very entertaining contest.
Lawrence held a 2 -- 1 lead going into the final period (all three goals scored in the first two minutes of period two).
Marian tied it up early in the third and that's now it ended.

Not the result I expected. Either Marian is struggling early ....or Lawrence is closing the gap.

I am guessing a little bit of both. It looks like LU outshot Marian by a fair margin. I know it is a bit of a BS stat, but it at least suggests that LU wasn't skating uphill all night. I don't know what to make of the Sabres. After splitting their early NCHA games, I was expecting them to blow out Finlandia and Lake. Both instead played reasonably well against Marian. I think it is reasonable at this point to conclude that MSOE and Adrian are pretty comparable, but we still don't know how exactly LU and Marian compare to those two. I think that we will consider both LU and Marian to be "good" MCHA teams at season's end.

This could be a very interesting MCHA season.

Re: The MCHA Thread

Another 2-2 tie between Marian and Lawrence on Friday night. A really good home and home series. The battle for the North Division will be a little more interesting this season.

I'm looking forward to the Thanksgiving Tournament games with these two squads against St. Norbert and St. Scholastica. They should be fun to watch.:)

Wonder which team will show up for SNC and Marian. They both seem really inconsistent so far. At the beginning of the year I thought the SNC v. Marian match up would be a good one.

I too am hoping for a good turkey tournament. These are the only two games that LU will play against NCHA schools this season. Norberts I suspect will be a big task for the vikings on the olympic ice, but the SSC game should certainly be competitive. If Marian comes to play and they get solid goaltending, I could see them winning both games.

Re: The MCHA Thread

I'm looking for some push from both Marian and LU. Both teams have good goalies. At times I feel that Marian's Baker is as good or better than MSOE's Toomey. With Dubetz and company, Marian has more fire power than LU. However, LU has a more balanced attack. Those two new LU forwards, #21 and #26, fit in nicely with the other established LU forwards. Specifically, on the PP.

I think that SNC has a little too much for the Hwy 41 crowd, but SSC could have real problems in both games.

Re: The MCHA Thread

So...let me get this right. MSOE splits with Adrian. Fine. I get that. But then they turn around tonight and lose......to 0-6 St. Marys.

That didn't do anyone in this league any favors whatsoever, boys.

Good god, have we reached a point where MCHA teams now look past their non-conference opponents?
