The MCHA Thread

Re: The MCHA Thread

what LF policies are you talking about? I think ever since they have left the NCHA they have struggled ebcause of there coach. He was not taking them in he right direction. They now have a new D1 caliber coach, who will lead them in the right direction. I imagine that will have a decent year, hopefully getting 10 wins. They should be able to toake care of Amherst and the NEscacs when they go out east, but do not stand much of a chance vs Adrian, who's recruiting class is all d1 caliber.
I would be shocked if LFC experiences this degree of success on their eastern trip!!

Re: The MCHA Thread

a few years back, LF would beat LU 5-1. Overall, LU has improved much more than LF has over the past 2 years. LF needs some stability to build off of. Many players go there, and dont play ll 4 years. that needs to change. Bark #15 from LF will help them tremendously this year. Erney and Stuart are also 2 very good goalies.

I think it was more than a few years back, but I agree that it hi-lites the post-NCHA slide of Lake. I think Lake fans just need to let McKelvie do his thing and rebuild the program. This season could be ugly, but he has a reputation for being a good young coach.

Re: The MCHA Thread

MCHA Preseason Coaches Poll
Adrian: 46 points (4 first-place votes)
MSOE: 42 (3 first-place votes)
Marian: 41 (1 first-place votes)
Lawrence: 31
Northland: 19
Finlandia: 19
Lake Forest: 18
Concordia: 8
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

That is where I would have put 4-8. Still not so sure about 1-2-3 ... should be entertaining.

Re: The MCHA Thread

How improved is concordia-wi? How can they be that bad year after year? Look for LFC to take this league to the next level...Adrian will win it with all froshski's. This league will be a decent league in a few years. Right now they are still jokes on the wheel like spokes on the steal.

While the league is no powerhouse by any means, I think it's safe to say that the MCHA is no longer a joke. Also, it should be very tight between the top 3 teams. No guaranteed crown for the Bulldogs this season.

Decent league in a few years? Wow, you must not watch too much hockey.
So it must take TWO teams from the SAME league in the NCAA final to be a good league?!?

And if LFC is taking the league to the next level ... it's not a level I want the MCHA headed.

I agree with your commentary. With 11 teams invited to the DIII playoffs it is most probable that only 4 Western teams will be in it. The MCHA has improved, and is respectable , but is still behind the NCHA and MIAC in grabbing that 4th Western slot.

However, there is a scenario in which the MCHA could get 2 teams into the playoffs this season. It starts with the USCHO'S Pre -season poll placing both Adrian and MSOE in the top 15. This positions them for a good run. If Adrian and MSOE split their season series 1-1-2 and they go 14-2-0,or better through the MCHA, allowing for possible losses or upsets in "trap games" to Marian, LU, or another team on the road, they'll be in good shape. This also is possible.

Both teams would have to go 4-1 or better in their NC games giving them a regular season record of 19-4-2 or better. Then they would have to meet in the Harris Cup Final. The rest of the MCHA teams would have to go .580 in their NC games as well. Possible for the top 2, but highly unlikely for the other 6.

Meanwhile, the NCHA and MIAC regular season champs would also have to win their conference championships leaving no clear second team in the conference strong enough to get that 4th slot. This could happen.

Of course I wouldn't recommend that anyone run to Vegas to lay down some monetary funds on this happening, but then in 1980 the hockey world did witness another strange set of events.:)

The MCHA won't put two teams in the tournament until they do away with their 20 game conference schedule.

Re: The MCHA Thread

I actually have watched hockey thanks...the MCHA is not good and it wasn't because of how many ncaa bids they have. It is because of the gap between Adrian and the lower end. LFC had a poor record because they had to play the likes of SNC, UWSP, UWS, stout on a nightly basis. Playing finlandia and northland is dumb and dumber compared to wedding crashers. nyuck nyuck nyuck

Re: The MCHA Thread

LFC is 8-10-2 and 5-14-1 in MCHA play the last two years, respectively. If their poor record is due to tougher competition from the NCHA, then what is the excuse for the past two seasons? LFC's poor conference record the last two seasons is not because they played SNC and company. Your argument regarding LFC's record does not hold water, given the two sub-.500 seasons in MCHA play.

As for the rest of the conference, MSOE probably had their best team ever last season, and Marian has been decent the last two years. I do not believe that this is a coincidence with regards to the other two major factors that have affected this conference. First, Adrian's 4-year dominance, and secondly, the AQ that is now available provides teams in this conference a valuable recruiting tool that they can use. We are beginning to see the fruits of that. This is not the same glorified club team conference that we saw 4 years ago. To believe anything else suggests that someone is not paying close enough attention. Is it a Division III elite conference? Certainly not. Much better than even 2 years ago? Absolutely.

1- Dumb and Dumber was an awesome movie.

2- Your first two posts on this forum stink.

If this were true, they would have popped into contention in their first year in the MCHA. They didn't. End of discussion.

Re: The MCHA Thread

Captain Howdy sez...my first two posts are of a lower caliber...noted. I will improve so I can be just like my hero NUprof. Finlandia is the league darkhouse...write that down.

Re: The MCHA Thread

It's cool that MSOE seems to have had success pulling players from western U.S. junior leagues like the WSHL and NORPAC. While certainly not as strong top to bottom, there are some kids in these leagues who can play. The few who move on to D3 have generally put up monster numbers in juniors. I think Blake Barkwell of Adrian had something ridiculous like 80 goals and 130 pts in his final season in the WSHL.

I wish Utah still had a WSHL team. Watching U18 and ACHA D2 hockey kinda doesn't cut it sometimes...

edit: Whoa, I just learned Park City has an expansion WSHL team. They're winless, but more hockey options are always welcome in these parts!

That certainly seems to be MSOE's MO.
