The MCHA Thread

Re: The MCHA Thread

Well, two legs are down, and things have cleared up quite a bit. Lawrence is all but out of the running, and now have their hands full trying to stay ahead of Northland for home ice in the 1st round. Marian now needs quite a bit of help, as they are now 5 points back of Adrian. MSOE now sits 4 points back, but they will make the trip to Arrington to all but decide this season's regular season title. If Adrian comes away with anything this weekend, they're the overwhelming favorite to take a 5th straight regular season title, as they close with Lake Forest, Concordia and Finlandia. MSOE's schedule is very similar after this weekend, too.

It's all or nothing for MSOE. A sweep gives them a tie for the conference lead, with the tiebreaker. Anything less and Adrian's likely gone again. That sweep at the hands of Marian really put a dent in their title hopes.

On another note, who got the bright idea to schedule Adrian at Marian for a Sunday-Monday series??? And then have Adrian turn around and play four days later at home? Just whose brainchild was this?

Re: The MCHA Thread

Another good weekend of MCHA hockey.

First positive thing I noticed was the 'bounceback' sweep for LFC over CUW after the hockey community got wind, or totally misunderstood, the process of evaluating the program at season's end. The Foresters now have the the inside track over CUW for the Harris Cup play-ins in the South Division.

LU, the MCHA version of the 'defense first' Nashville Preds, had a road trip sweep over Northland 3-0 & 3-2. They shut down the MCHA's top two scorers, McIntosh and Wright, while having an unbelievable comeback in game#2 by scoring 2 goals in the last 25 seconds. The sweep puts them in a more desirable situation for the second seed in the North Division.

Finlandia's Saturday overtime road victory over Marian puts them right on the heels of Northland for the final spot of the North Division Harris Cup play-ins. Finlandia hosts Northland next weekend in a big series.

Finally, the MCHA powers met in Michigan and MSOE gained a needed win, and a ground saving tie, to close the gap to two points in the standings. Now, both teams have 3 series to go against, as Raidineer calls them 'goof troops':p, to see which squad is fairest in the MCHA.

Re: The MCHA Thread

Wow.

I'm operating under the assumption that there are a couple Lake Forest people that pop in here from time to time. I have a question regarding one Brendan Sullivan. Ummm....why didn't he play until last weekend? He's been on the roster for three seasons, and while his performance in seasons past is underwhelming, he was absolutely stellar tonight. From my limited point of view, he appears to be clearly better than Marc Stuart (and since I have not seen Austin Erney, I have no opinion on him whatsoever, but Stuart was playing ahead of him).

Was his lack of playing time injury-related, disciplinary, or otherwise? I'm not asking for anything too deep here, but to have this guy on the roster and not to use him given the other options (along with the team's other record) is a head-scratcher to me.

Re: The MCHA Thread

MCHA Sweeps Week

Lawrence sweeps Marian to take share of North Division lead and 3rd in MCHA, while taking the season series 2-0-2.

Finlandia sweeps Northland to pass them up for 3rd in North Division and hold down 5th in MCHA. Season series now tied at 2 .

Adrian swept LFC to keep top spot in MCHA and 2 point lead over MSOE.

MSOE sweeps Concordia (WI) to keep on heels of the defending MCHA champs.

Re: The MCHA Thread

The north is looking much more fluid this year. Marian and LU should not be sleeping on Northland and Finlandia this weekend.

Re: The MCHA Thread

You know, I had not noticed that.

Lake Forest has also been noticeably better as of late.

EDIT: Let's be careful about Finlandia here. To be fair, their six wins have been against Concordia (1), a sweep of Lake Forest before LFC found out about this thing called "goaltending", one against Marian (full credit there), and a sweep of Northland, who has been Jekyll and Hyde this season.

They have been clearly improving. Good to see...

I agree it's nice to see the bar is being moved,..... but I'll reserve my praise until we can measure the improvement in terms of our perfomance out of conference. I'd really like to see more games out of conference in our schedules.

I agree, and it is good to see. Like Lake, they are a very young team that plays a bunch of freshmen. I expected them to get better as the season went on. I am glad their program seems to be getting back on track.

Re: The MCHA Thread

OK, I'm waiting for Raidineer to pop in and pour some ice water on this Finlandia 'feel good moment'.;)

Re: The MCHA Thread

Finlandia has definitely improved, though they did not have wins against top notch programs... however, the win vs Marian showed they are going in the right direction, and are on the uprise...should be dangerous next year or 2, but imagine it is hard to recruit players there...there roster is young, and features many different jr leagues and hs players...

Lake Forest could have had around 6 or 7 more wins if sullivan played earlier...they already have a top notch NAHL goalie committed there for 2012-13 so there should be no more goaltending problems....they will be vey good within the next year or 2, and have a top notch school with an improving hockey program.....also recent rink renovation make the place a little better than it was before plus a beautiful new sports center...

Plus, Finlandia and LF both have top notch coaches, who will for sure build the programs in the right direction for years to come, but lf has the edge due to academic advantages

Btw, does anyone know the salary of a D3 hockey coach for mens???I imagine near 80,000???this would make sense b/c a d1 asst is making near
60,000???

It can't be $80K. If anything, I am guessing it is probably lower than $60K. I don't even know if tenured faculty members make $80K at a school like Lake.

Re: The MCHA Thread

North-
.
Lake Forest- They lost their top tender, their top scorer, and their top defenseman all of whom would of been Juniors
The offense's top 4 returning forwards are basically 'assist' men totalling 15G and 35A in 27 games last year. The
defense has 5 reliable returners. The netminders are capable, but injury prone.

My preseason analysis of LFC was fairly accurate. Now they have their top tender back, but little else has changed.

Sullivan has been good in his 4 games played since his return. In those games he has a 3.01 GA and a .915 SV%. This is an improvement over the teams current 4.14 GA as a team over the first 21 games. He deserved the 'Defensive Player of the Week' award he was given 2 weeks ago.

However, the problem that has not changed is the scoring. This team averages only 2.24 goals a game and that won't win you many games. They only have 2 players with more than 5 goals scored , and 5 guys (no pun intended) with a decent amount of assists. They have only one guy that looks like a finisher. As one of my LFC alum co-workers said," This team has more firepower sitting in the cafeteria with ex-Foresters, than is on the ice."

McKelvie will get this turned around. I'm confident of that. Those LFC underclassmen have been making good progress.

I think the top coaches are making more than $80K. I think some of them teach a class or two as well? I have no idea what the national average would be.

Re: The MCHA Thread

U]MCHA Sweeps Week II[/U]
Adrian sweeps Concordia (WI), while MSOE does likewise to Lake Forest. Going into the last week of the regular season Adrian leads MSOE by 2pts., but MSOE holds the tiebreaker. Next- Adrian @ Finlandia, and MSOE @ Northland.

Lawrence sweeps Finlandia, while Marian keeps pace with 2 over Northland. All even, but Lawrence owns the tiebreaker over Marian. Next weekend Lawrence has a Home & Home with Lake Forest, and Marian has the same with Concordia (WI).

Will it be Sweep Week III or will some dents occur on the road to the Harris Cup?

Re: The MCHA Thread

All right. Here's what we've got.

Concordia and Northland are done.

Adrian and Marian get byes, finishing first in their respective divisions.

The two 1st round games are Lake Forest-MSOE and Finlandia-Lawrence.

Had Lawrence beaten LFC last night, Finlandia would be heading to Marian instead.

Re: The MCHA Thread

Two weeks ago, I would have guessed Lawrence would have taken care of business ... but as they say that is why they play the games.

Other than that, I was happy to see Adrian did not get tripped up in any of their final four games.

Should be another good one.

Re: The MCHA Thread

Winning the Harris Cup this year is going to be like running buck naked through a mine field.
