Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

USA vs Argentina on Saturday at noon. The TV audience would be astronomical. The team MUST capitalize on this opportunity.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

That last five minutes made up for the rest of the game.

Also some Oscar worthy acting by the Swiss player.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Defeat Messi, defeat Argentina.
Which is probably what the four teams that have lost to them so far this World Cup were saying beforehand as well.

Rough ending for the Swiss, though; they defended so well all match.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

There's no way this round goes all chalk, right?

We've gotta be pretty much bound to win now with all the favorites winning so far.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Rodrigo Palazao into the the game. You may recall that his father Enrico once sang the Star Spangled Banner before an Angels game with Queen Elizabeth in attendance.
You and your obscure cultural references. Next you'll say he sang it in San Diego.

Tough loss for the Swiss. Looked like they'd have their shot at penalties.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Almost saw my first soccer ENG.

I believe Ronaldinho scored one against Seaman of England from about <strike>the halfway line</strike> 40 yards out in the 2002 World Cup, though Seaman wasn't nearly as far upfield as the Swiss goalie was.

EDIT: after I found the video, it wasn't nearly as far out as I had thought it was. and it was off a free kick in which Seaman strayed too far upfield. not an empty net goal at all.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Starting XI released and no Altidore.

4-3-3 formation.
I can't figure out for sure what we're looking at. Is it:

Beasley - Dempsey - Zusi
Jones - Bradley - Bedoya
Johnson - Besler - Gonzalez - Cameron
Howard

?

USA 4-2-3-1 (?): Howard; Johnson, González, Besler, Beasley; Cameron, Jones; Bedoya, Bradley, Zusi; Dempsey.

US Soccer says it's a 4-3-3 on the locker-room whiteboard. Team was told 4-3-3 not 4-5-1 "to suggest an attacking mentality."

Still trying to figure this out. Evidently Bedoya is still considered one of our best midfielders. Not sure why Diskerud or Johannsson isn't being given a shot where we might need more offensive punch, but whatever. It's not like Bedoya has been bad. And Cameron at a defensive midfield position? Sure, I can see it.

But where's Beckerman?

I remember this one by "El Loco" Higuita. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tfQpz51kSQ

That was just the result of his crazy style. This one was almost a real empty netter -- the goalie all the way up field for a corner, in a situation in which you'd expect to see one in hockey..
