Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

New FIFA rankings announced, post-World Cup 2014.

US drops 2, to 15th, leap-frogged by France and Chile. Costa Rica with nearly identical point total as US in 16th.

We made the top 16 in the tournament and were then eliminated, and now are ranked # 15. Sounds just about right.

One of the unintended consequences of raising a daughter.

This season isn't as much fun because Andi is a nothing burger, but prior seasons were great. In particular, Emily's was the Jwaneng mine of mockery and scorn.

Last season was funny in that Juan Pablo was a total dumpster fire of a human being.

(The wife watches it, so it's usually on the background.)

Generally speaking, the Bachelor seasons are better since boobfest > sausagefest. The problem recently has been the bachelors are such appalling human beings (Juan Pablo, Sean). Though the Sean season did feature the Greatest Moment in Reality TV History, when on the home visits Desiree's brother Nate ripped the entire premise of the show, its inauthenticity, and the vacuity of appearing on it. I don't really know why they aired that footage -- presumably because they thought the audience would share the girl's morbid embarrassment and be sympathetic to her and hostile to the brother. I think he's the greatest hero reality TV has ever produced.

I didn't realize that YMCA U-7 soccer took PKs. :p:D:D

So you maintain that penalty kicks are pure luck, and consequently no skill is involved?

Some skill, mostly luck. That almost certainly leans to more luck the higher you go in skill level.

And laugh all you want. I don't care. I've almost certainly faced more PKs than anyone on this board.

I've taken a couple dozen against d-1 players. It's a guessing game. Pure and simple. It's a massive area to cover. 192 sq ft. Even in lower leagues reaction times are almost meaningless. Every so often a player will give away where he's putting the ball. Even in high school and rec leagues that's fairly uncommon. So almost all keepers guess and pray they get it right.

We can debate all we want about how much luck is involved, but I don't think we're going to get anywhere. I'm just glad to see that you've come off your ridiculous assertion that it was pure luck.

I love assertions like this. How many people do you actually know on this board? Perhaps more importantly, how many do you actually know outside of Minnesota or Wisconsin?

That's nice that you've taken a couple dozen against d-1 players. FWIW, I come to this viewpoint from a keeper's perspective, and I routinely face PKs against former professional players and occasionally against current professional players. I was never trying to make the point that luck doesn't matter. I think we may be arguing to degree (which would be fruitless). I'll repost my examples, and let me know if you agree or disagree:

I'll put it this way, a perfect penalty is unstoppable, no matter how good the goalie reads/guesses. These are typically characterized by being in the upper half of the net, with pace, and generally hitting the corner or side netting. I want to say there was a German study that looked at PKs and found that when players aim for the top half of the net, and their shot is on target, they score something along the lines of 98% of their penalties. Of course, going this route, you run the risk of becoming the next Roberto Baggio.

A good to great penalty is only stoppable when a goalie both reads/guesses correctly, has the athletic ability/agility to get in the proper position, AND is strong enough to keep it out of the net. This is what happened on the 2nd PK stop for Romero. It was a tremendous save. Throw in that it basically sealed a spot in the World Cup final, and it makes it even prettier.

Only a mediocre penalty can be stopped by luck alone. This is typically how penalties are stopped (including how Romero stopped the first PK). The goalie guesses, and the player hits a little low shot that basically hits the goalie (as opposed to the goalie actually making the stop). I would never praise a goalie for making this type of save. It's routine, and stops about 1 in 5 or 6 penalties because the players get too nervous to try and hit a proper penalty.

Well, co-ed rec league does...
...and after the first one (where I guessed incorrectly) I realized that there was no luck involved at all - at least, not in the 4th division adult co-ed league I was playing in, where some of the players had never played before at all. The rule was that all penalties had to be taken by women, so when taking a penalty against women who have only played for a few months, you have time to get a cup of coffee, read the paper, and then amble over to make the save, if it's actually on goal at all. I'm sure I was at least 90% stopping penalties in that league.

At the pro level, probably 30% are unstoppable, and of the others, you do have to get "lucky" to guess which area to be in (left, right, or center), but there is still mucho skill involved in getting enough force behind a hand, foot, knee, elbow, etc to actually make the save. Based on those odds, a really skillful goalie might make 30% of the stops, where a mediocre one will be down around 20%. Definitely enough difference for the trends to show after a couple dozen penalties.

Perhaps you should get off your high horse. You're the one who made a similar assumption about me with your original post.

Settle down there shooter, it was a joke. My assumption was based on your ridiculous assertion that PKs were on par with the card game war, and that there was absolutely no skill involved. You've since backtracked off that assertion.

Nice job of dodging the question though. You'd make a great politician. :p:D:D
