The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I think he means the card game.

That was my assumption as well. It doesn't change the fact that PKs are nothing like the card game. While there is certainly luck involved, it's simplistic and incorrect to say that PKs are pure luck. My guess is dxmnkd316 (or anyone else trying to say that PKs are pure luck) hasn't taken (or tried to stop) too many PKs.

I'll put it this way, a perfect penalty is unstoppable, no matter how good the goalie reads/guesses. These are typically characterized by being in the upper half of the net, with pace, and generally hitting the corner or side netting. I want to say there was a German study that looked at PKs and found that when players aim for the top half of the net, and their shot is on target, they score something along the lines of 98% of their penalties. Of course, going this route, you run the risk of becoming the next Roberto Baggio.

A good to great penalty is only stoppable when a goalie both reads/guesses correctly, has the athletic ability/agility to get in the proper position, AND is strong enough to keep it out of the net. This is what happened on the 2nd PK stop for Romero. It was a tremendous save. Throw in that it basically sealed a spot in the World Cup final, and it makes it even prettier.

Only a mediocre penalty can be stopped by luck alone. This is typically how penalties are stopped (including how Romero stopped the first PK). The goalie guesses, and the player hits a little low shot that basically hits the goalie (as opposed to the goalie actually making the stop). I would never praise a goalie for making this type of save. It's routine, and stops about 1 in 5 or 6 penalties because the players get too nervous to try and hit a proper penalty.

Again, this was all in relation to my thoughts on how Romero was deserving of being a finalist for the Golden Glove. The PKs in the semis were a portion of why he deserves to be there (along with keeping a clean sheet throughout the entire knockout stages (330 minutes thus far)). I also made clear that I would have been okay if someone else (including Tim Howard) would have received that final spot. Ultimately, the only way Romero wins is if he keeps another clean sheet en route to Argentina's third title AND is impressive in doing so.

"24-year old Thomas Muller, who was 10 years old the last time Germany won the World Cup."

That's some great math there.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

While I think Germany will win this, I wouldn't mind Argentina winning because Brazil's morale would be reduced to nothing.

If Argentina does win, will they just demolish the Maracana?

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Nice of Tirico to ask Ballack and whatever the Argentine's name is who they think would win the game. What a waste of :30.

I've been enjoying the CBC coverage of the World Cup. Scott Russell is a pro. Plus, Craig Forest is pretty insightful. Andi Petrillo is also pretty nice to look at. :)

Concussion reform is going to have to happen soon. You can't just let people walk back onto the field and then fall all over themselves.

The Uruguay player in one of the earlier rounds was legitimately unconscious and was allowed to go back on.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

At least two yellows by Germany. The first was questionable at best. The last one probably should have been a red, for the nut shot.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Yes Ian, Taylor thought he was concussed:
Here we go again FIFA...#WorldCupFinal and your ineptitude to address the head injury problem is for everyone to see. Kramer was concussed!

It's sad how much crap Twellman got for saying Kramer should come out, then have Kramer fall down.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I think ARG will lose as they are not wearing their sweet light blue and white striped jerseys.
