The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

muller is very scrawny...doesn't even look like he had shin guards on either

Stadiums are fine, in fact, quite solid. Issue has been the surrounding infrastructure. With the exception of Maracana, which HAD to be ready for last year's Confed Cup, getting to and from has been a pain in the rump.

Even in São Paulo, arguably the most advanced city in Brazil, I was still left with a good 25 or 30-minute walk to Itaquera Stadium for the opener. You could see where there was intent to build access points, but they never got around to it.

Once inside, things are pretty solid and well-organized. For Brazil.

Shoot. Almost saw one of the greatest comebacks ever. If he could have just composed himself and maybe tried to settle and kick rather than head it.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Jozy starts or doesn't play, and imho that is the out of the box strategy since most disagree with it.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

They're playing in the middle of the jungle. The ice cubes aren't even cold down there.

Wouldn't there be some concern about throwing Altidore in there cold?

He's only been out two weeks, and has been at full practice speed recently. It would be different if he'd been out 6 months and lost all of his match fitness.

I say, if he (and the docs) think he can go, start him. Do NOT sub him in and take a chance on a wasted substitution. Going to need his presence up front - been missing for a couple matches now.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

40 minutes in and I'd say equal chances on both sides. Since France is supposed to have more talent, I'd say Nigeria has played better so far.
From what I saw, the Nigerians weren't exactly angels, but the French were downright goons. My distaste for les Bleus went up several notches on the corner when the French defender wrapped the Nigerian attacker in his arms from behind, effectively grounding him as a beautiful corner sailed over their heads. No PK. No card. Seriously disgraceful. The NHL would be setting him up with a little vacation right about now.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Well today is the day. Let's go US!.

I believe Altidore will start and at half time the formation will change and someone will be subbed in. Regardless of how well the others have been playing, he adds to our team.
I'd like to see us put some pressure on the Belgian defense and Altidore is the guy to do that. If he truly is ready to go.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Got to the bar 20 minutes before the Portugal game and barely snagged the last table.

Just to be safe we're going an hour before today. Even though it's an earlier kick-off on a week day, I'm not taking any chances.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I will be trying to sneak out and watch. Around my office I'm going to guess that sports bars will be 99.8% Spanish speaking, so it should be really interesting. :-)

Go USA!

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I scheduled the plumber to come to my house today and install a vanity and redo some poorly done pipes. It happens to match up with the USA soccer match...I texted my boss this morning if he needed anything else from the jobsite before I head home to meet the plumber and work from home...

His response: "You mean watch soccer?"

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I, unfortunately, have a Dr. appointment at 2:45 PM CDT today.:( Appointment was made 2 weeks ago when I had no idea if they would advance, far less when they would play. Not a huge soccer fan but I have been following his WC (especially since I am laid up at home and able to watch many games). Will DVR it and they do show the games in the lobby...
