Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

You know what? **** this line of thought. You know why this sport isn't going to grow? Because instead of letting people go out and celebrate like any other GD nation, people like you walk around wagging your finger at them saying, "Nope, don't celebrate!" ****. That.

You know what grows a sport? National celebrations showing wild fans getting into the sport maybe for the first time ever. We score a goal and get a win and people go nuts. Fantastic. I hope people go nuts with every win. If they dragged their friend with to the bar and that friend goes wild with the knowledgable fan, maybe he had a good enough time to watch the next game and if he's lucky, get to see another win.

**** me.

if the stanley cup were a 16 team 4x4 pool play plus single game knockout...

That was held every four years with national teams where the US has won right games since it began in 1930. Then yes.

If you were getting at the Olympics, that's fine. Expect the US has won more games in the past eight years than the us men's national team has won at the WC in 84 years. Hell, we didn't even qualify for forty straight years.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

The UEFA president on expanding it to 40:
"[The World Cup is] not based on the quality of the teams because you don't have the best 32 at the World Cup ... but it's a good compromise. ... It's a political matter so why not have more Africans? The competition is to bring all the people of all the world. If you don't give the possibility to participate, they don't improve."

Basically sounds more like the NCAA Tournament where the little guy is guaranteed a spot, "just cuz." Works well in a one and done tournament, not so well when you have to play 3 or 4 games to move onto the second round.

Looking at the Caribbean Confederation list it would just be a final group of Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, DR and PR every time for qualifying.

Trinidad & Tobago, too. They've made the Hex with some regularity lately.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

We had this World Cup spots discussion awhile ago. I understand not all of you were there for that or paying attention back then but the current system is very fair the way it is...

All the confederations except UEFA, CONMEBOL and OFC get about 1 spot per 10 teams in the confederation:

Africa 5 spots, 52 nations
Asia 4.5 spots, 43 nations
CONCACAF 3.5 spots, 35 nations

CONMEBOL and UEFA get more because of history and strength.

UEFA 13 spots, 53 nations (1/5)
CONMEBOL 4.5 spots, 10 nations (~1/2)

OFC is by far the weakest and has the easiest path to the inter-continental playoffs. 0.5 spot for 11 nations.
New Zealand played 9 games to win its chance at the World Cup.

Resubscribed

I know this is your thing, but when I'm on my phone and don't feel like resubscribing, I either don't reply with quote or if I want to quote something I copy the whole post, go back a page, scroll all the way down and paste it as a regular post and then it doesn't unsubscribe me.

I assume the .5 spots mean a team gets to play a team from another federation for a spot?

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Wait, so it's replying that unsubscribes as opposed to just a regular post?

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Well shjt.

Yes. This last rotation it was Asia vs CONMEBOL (Uruguay beat Jordan) and CONCACAF vs OFC (Mexico beat New Zealand).
In 2010 it was Asia vs OFC (New Zealand beat Bahrain) and CONCACAF vs CONMEBOL (Uruguay beat Costa Rica).
In 2006 it was Asia vs CONCACAF (Trinidad & Tobago beat Bahrain) and CONMEBOL vs OFC (Uruguay beat Australia).
In 2002 it was UEFA vs AFC (Ireland beat Iran) and CONMEBOL vs OFC (Uruguay beat Australia).
In 1998 it was AFC vs OFC (Iran beat Australia)

Huh, I never realized that Uruguay has has qualified for the last 4 world cups via inter-continental playoff. Also of note, the inter-continental playoff is the reason Australia chose to seek membership in Asia's federation...

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I don't want to see 40 teams, to me the qualifying in a way is the real part of the competition as you get to play everybody in your pool twice. The rest of the tournament is basically a one-off sprint. To me this looks more like a money thing.

You got it backwards in 2006. Australia beat Uruguay on penalties.

That's why I don't want things messed with. The World Cup seems to be at a pretty good state. The only real change that needs to be made is how teams are distributed into Pots for the Draw.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Schwandro Peres! *** kind of horse shjt Brazilian name simulator is this, how on earth do I get 2 names? Also I would love to have to hear announcers have to say something that craptastic about 600 times.

Mine was Tando...kinda like it.

I've not found it possible to subscribe with my phone, but I honestly don't miss the feature.

How do you they should change it? Just asking not saying it's perfect the way it is.
