The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

All I'm saying is we could easily finish with the same record we had in '94 and finish 3rd in our group and have no chance of advancing. It's simple math. Yes, there are fewer teams so ideally the group should be easier but I don't know anyone going into this world cup that thought this group is easier than what the US had in '94 as the hosts. The hosts are suppose to have a relatively easy group as a guaranteed seed. To say that because we advanced to the knockout round in 1994 we should do it all the time is silly.

Why are you such a negative nancy about all of this. I will not be happy if we don't get out of the group, but I'm also realistic in that we're not there yet. If we ever want to get to the point of expecting to get out of group, we have to do it in back to back world cups...we've never done that...hell this is first time we've won a game in back to back world cups.

What a dick comment to take what I said and turn it that way.

So your perspective is not being a dick? Ok...

If you call my expectation and perspective as being negative, that seems to say more about you than me. Just sayn.

As a review, I'm very excited we won, but it was Ghana and the first round. Lots of play to go, though. As Brazil just found out.

94 was supposed to be the start of something special. Instead people think it's amazing to win against our fellow also rans. No wonder this sport makes no traction.

Ukraine better hopes Russia wins otherwise Putin will be sending more troops to grab some more land.

You're a dick for your dig on where we've come from '94 and your thoughts on how "easy" it should be to get out of the group stage now that there are 32 teams instead of 24...You don't think the sport has grown since 1994?

I certainly don't think the reaction to yesterday's win would have been the same if USA had just held on an won 1-0. I do think a lot of the reaction shot stuff is just soccer people trying to show that the sport has finally arrived, more than anything.

Mark Geiger's second match is listed as Spain V Chile.

Getting a conmebol v UEFA game seems like a good sign...

For the more knowledgeable international soccer types:
What would it take for CONCACAF to go to a full 4 teams in the World Cup and knock these CAF nations to 4.5 and into that playoff with Oceania?

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I honestly have no idea how they allocate those spots. It would make sense if they did it like UEFA and had a formula to determine it by performance in the previous WCs.

the easy answer is that's all politics and it's not likely to change right now...CONCACAF should be happy to keep their half spot playoff with OFC.

It's more likely that success for CONCACAF will help keep them at 3.5 and a bad showing could drop them to 3 due to perception of their weakness beyond USA and Mexico.

Not likely. Every FIFA members gets a vote. That means Africa is about 5 times more influential than CONMEBOL. Now I'm not sure if all of FIFA votes on the confederation spots or if another committee handles that, but there's a reason why the two biggest confederations do not have playoffs to get in.

On the wiki page for the World Cup there's a section about Blatter talking about expanding to 40, which would guarantee a spot for Oceania, as well as a Caribbean club. That would take about 2/3 of the teams away from CONCACAF. He said it would be 1 more to UEFA, 2 more to Asia and Africa, the 1 to the Caribbean, the 1 guaranteed to Oceania and then a shared between CONCACAF and CONMEBOL. So if anything the playoff is here to stay, it would just transition to playing CONMEBOL.

Remember when Mexico almost didn't qualify? Now they have a win and a tie against one of the top 3 teams in the world.

Oh yeah...Costa Rica beat Uruguay too.

CONCACAF sucks....

Love the Goalkeepers Union comment from Keller.

You know what? **** this line of thought. You know why this sport isn't going to grow? Because instead of letting people go out and celebrate like any other GD nation, people like you walk around wagging your finger at them saying, "Nope, don't celebrate!" ****. That.

You know what grows a sport? National celebrations showing wild fans getting into the sport maybe for the first time ever. We score a goal and get a win and people go nuts. Fantastic. I hope people go nuts with every win. If they dragged their friend with to the bar and that friend goes wild with the knowledgable fan, maybe he had a good enough time to watch the next game and if he's lucky, get to see another win.

**** me.

The fact that you call Ghana an "also ran" shows an exteme lack of knowledge.
