The end of leagues as we know?

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

Dear BHHC,

SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!

Cause, um ... I'm not seeing it.
Regards,
D

This isn't about money, this is about hurt pride and to show the big mean B1G schools that anything they can do, we can do to.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

Hasn't the BTN come out and said they won't show non conference hockey games?

But who even is aware of BTN? They're like Versus. Not being on FSN anymore will hurt the Gophers.

From what I have been told here is the early ideas how the Gophers tv schedule will look like.

20 BTHC Games will be shown nationally or FSN picks anything left over. The BTN will only show member vs. member schools. No nc games will be shown.

6 to 18 nc games will be shown on FSN.

FSN will not televise anything not Gopher hockey related because UMD, SCSU, MSU-M, BSU etc have not been able to make money for FSN. This is all early and of course things can change.

Um .. I coined the acronym BHHC. So yeah, I know exactly what it's about. Said nothing but that several times in this (and every other thread here over the last year). HOWEVER, "they" have claimed, are claiming and are likely to continue to claim that this move is in their best future financial interests. NOTHING I've seen from anyone in this thread convinces me that there is anything other than imagined potential revenues from some PR outfit they paid.

But they are not. The BHHC doesn't have a national tv contract.

That's the most asinine thing I've ever heard. All they ever show is Gopher hockey! Well...except for Final Five. How do they know that an SCSU vs. UMD game wouldn't draw ratings?

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

Agreed. Lets throw out Western Michigan since they're out and use a five year sample. Would that satisfy you?

All six programs are easily top 20 programs and over the last 5 years. North Dakota, DU and Miami are probably Top 5 [or real close] in average end of season Pairwise. UND has averaged 26.6 wins, Miami 26.4 wins, DU 23.6 wins, CC 20.8 wins, UMD 19.2, UNO 18.2 [Doesn't factor in ties].

It's impossible to speculate how those teams will fair in PWR in the new world order.

Schools like SCSU and MSU-Mankato were given a shot when they joined the WCHA (and I remember when each joined).

Why haven't they developed "fly on their own" programs? Or is it just easier to ride along in a league.

SCSU and MSU-M should be ****ed at themselves. The only one I feel sorry for is BSU.
Hey jackbib, over the last decade SCSU has been better than UMD. UMD has had one great season. SCSU also just started to renovate their arena. Why don't you learn something and then come over to the adults table.

Don't feed the trolls. He's a proven moron.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

The average KRACH ratings for each team involved in this realignment. I'm assuming Notre Dame will accept the invitation and join the "Little Ten Hockey Conference."

Code:
BTHC KRACH Ave
Michigan	65 6.5
Minnesota	65 6.5
Wisconsin	109 10.9
Michigan St	158 15.8
Ohio St 219 21.9

LTHC KRACH Ave
North Dakota	56 5.6
Denver 58 5.8
Col Coll	78 7.8
Miami 140 14
Duluth 151 15.1
Notre Dame	186 18.6
Omaha 239 23.9

Leftovers	KRACH Ave
St Cloud	115 11.5
Northern	198 19.8
Mankato 208 20.8
Alaska 249 24.9
Ferris 264 26.4
UAA 269 26.9
Western 305 30.5
BSU 321 32.1
Michigan Tech	324 32.4
Lake State	337 33.7
Bowling Green	380 38

The BTHC has an average KRACH rank of 12.32, the LTHC 12.98 and the leftovers average 27.

If the leftovers go geographically, they will likely be autobid conferences like the AHA. Perhaps the new WCHA (MN+UP+AK) will occasionally have a team earn an at-large berth. It is hard to see how the new CCHA (MI+OH+NY+PA?) earns an at-large.

Likely conference breakdown for NCAA bids:
HEA: 2-4
BTHC: 2-4
LTHC: 2-4
ECAC: 1-3
WCHA: 1-2
CCHA: 1
AHA: 1

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

Just a few points.

Miami pushed hard for this --- Its in one of the newspaper articles. Miami's attendance in a decimated CCHA would of taken a massive hit to a program that just shelled out $40+ million for a new arena. This was a no-brainer for them.
Agreed, Miami and whoever else leave from the CCHA have the most to gain from this. But again, it is highly debatable whether simply joining the existing WCHA wouldn't be just as good if not better for MU.
And also, again, Miami's rink holds 3,600. Increased ticket sales are capped at a pretty low level of financial significance.

UNO was drawing 8,000 towards the end of last season. Their fans have proven that they'll back a winner and they want to see name brand opponents. Omaha is a wealthy city and there's no reason that they won't draw the second biggest crowds in the Super League in due time. Most important, Omaha is in the heart of USHL country. Super League teams will be using Omaha trips as de facto recruiting visits.
I don't see how any of this spurs them to want to leave the WCHA. Their fans have proven they will back a winner, but will they back a team that routinely finishes 5th or 6th in an 8 team conference and is outside the NCAA bubble? Is there any reason that UNO wouldn't draw the 2nd biggest crowds in the WCHA? As far as recruiting trips, again I don't see how this is an issue exclusive to joining a start-up conference.

CC - Fanbase are not alums or people tied to the school. CC had had to drop ticket prices despite successful seasons lately because the WCHA had become too watered down. Give Springs residents name brand opponents and a few wins and it will re-energize the program. They will see an uptick in attendance.
Same issue as UNO. A team that finishes 4th-6th most years in an 8 team conference and subsequently misses out on the NCAA tournament. How does that help to create better attendance or re-energize the program? I also find your statement that ticket prices were dropped "because the WCHA had become too watered down" to be suspect. There were a lot of factors at play there. Considering UNO would be making the jump to this new conference with CC, you are basically saying ticket prices were dropped because BSU joined the league. That is a stretch to say the least.

UMD - awesome new arena & NC Banner. Say no more.
Say no more? Say anything? How do either of those things make Duluth want to leave a league filled with natural rivals, low travel costs, and the chance to be a big dog with regular trips to the NCAA for a league where the will be middle of the pack and struggle greatly to get on the right side of the pairwise?

DU & UND - Want to be national powers with NHL draftees.
Indeed. This is the only real reason this league is being pushed. DU and UND are afraid they can't stay relevant in the WCHA without Minnesota and Wisconsin in the league. I find that fear to be unrealistic.

Because by FSN standards the Gopher ratings are mediocre they just hope to break even during the winter months. I don't believe they will take a chance scheduling anybody but the Gophers.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

there are very very few hockey fans in mankato. I really hope st cloud and bemidji pull through this, but i have a hard time caring about mankato (and I graduated from there!). their fans spend more time drinking, chanting and yelling at the other team players/opposing team fans than they do watching the game and b) have absolutely no standards for their coach or their team. mankato considers a season a success if they beat/split a regular season weekend series with the gophers. they are still talking down there about the 3 game series with the gophers 4 years ago when they "gave the gophers all they could handle" in a losing effort.
