The Countries: Forget it, Burkina Faso, Michigan is still the worst.

The irony of them not speaking any Russian and thinking there'd be translators and/or plenty of folks who went through ESL programs is delicious. As RWNJ Anglo-Canadians, I'm sure they whined about the mandatory French classes in their schools, let alone the immigrants to Canada who don't know much English.

Hadn't thought of that; that's hilarious and a wonderful truth!

Apparently a bunch of Americans fell for Soviet propaganda during the Great Depression and did the same thing, thinking communism was the answer. In true Stalinist fashion, most of them disappeared into the gulag system and were never heard from again.

They didn't really fall for propaganda, they were committed Communists and they shared workers' union (Soviet) ideals. Unfortunately, by the 30s both Lenin and then Stalin in a bigger way had purged the Soviets, centralized all power, and converted the Dictatorship of the Masses to the Dictatorship of... well... them.

The betrayal of Stalin and of the leadership of the Communist International is explained by the character of the present ruling stratum in the U.S.S.R.: it is a privileged and an uncontrolled bureaucracy, which has raised itself above the people and which oppresses the people. Marxism teaches us that existence determines consciousness. The Soviet bureaucracy above all fears criticism, movement, and risk: it is conservative, it greedily defends its own privileges. Having strangled the working class in the U.S.S.R., it has long since lost faith in the world revolution. It promises to build “socialism in one country,” if the toilers shut up, endure, and obey. -- Leon Trotsky, 1935

The USSR is basically American Conservatism. It started out saying many of the right things, it had some intellectual underpinnings, and a lot of idealistic and adventurous people rallied behind it. But after a few decades it devolved into an authoritarian sh-tshow and then ground on as a menace. Hopefully it will not take 70 years to execute the New Right.

Lmao. Labour will always find a way to fuck it up. They're worse than the democrats. They couldn't convince half their country that turning into a second world shithole is an incredibly bad idea. TWICE.

The Democrats have changed, maybe Labour will too.

You and I are used to the ancient left being the sh-tshow, but for the entire political memory of people 30 and younger, the left is competent and strategic and the right is the sh-tshow.

LOLDems is a lazy meme, and it is deployed to make sure we don't win and upset the apple cart. Don't enable it.

That wasn't on Labour as much as it was on a bunch of young stupid people who screwed up the vote for funsies. I remember a lot of interviews with first time voters who voted for Brexit not knowing what it entailed (because they didn't care to pay attention) and because they thought it would lose so it was a protest vote. Sound familiar?

I mean, sure. But that's on labour for not explaining it. That was their job.

In a nation with free elections, how do you forcibly explain an idea or consequence to the willfully ignorant? A political party can only do so much.

I understand that, and it's a fair point.

But for something the rest of the world saw unfold and think, "holy hell, electing a bad president or prime minister is one thing, but permanently severing yourself from one of the three largest economies of the world is unfathomable" it's hard to wrap my head around it.

I stand by my statement that it's a failure on the part of labour. It's their job. You can do everything in your power sometimes and fail, but it's still a failure.

Sorry that is a copout. They were told and ignored it. That is like blaming Hillary for Independents ignoring her warnings about Trump and staying home.

People have free will...if they are too stupid to see that the Earth is round it isnt an indictment on their Astronomy teacher.

Yes, and she failed too.

No...she told us in no uncertain terms. She said it on national TV multiple times. People ignored it. She can't force people to listen.

You are blaming the wrong people. The voters failed not Labour and not Hillary. If we knew how could the idiot voters in Britain not? They chose not to. It's their fault period end of story.
