The Countries: Forget it, Burkina Faso, Michigan is still the worst.

Queen margerethe of Denmark is abdicating the throne in two weeks. Has back surgery earlier this year and likely just wants to chain smoke and create art til she dies. TIL she loved Tolkien so much she created LOTR drawings that Tolkien loved so much he included them in the danish versions of the trilogy books. She was now the longest serving monarch after Lizzie croaked

her lovable son Fred, often seen enjoying alcoholic drinks around town, will take over as king with his Aussie wife as queen. Will take the attention off the fact he was just busted coming out of a sleepover with another woman at her home in Madrid.

They're just living their best lives. As long as they don't act like the British royals I say hell yes to them

Yeah apparently they don’t do a big coronation so no big waste of money there. The Scandinavian royals don’t seem to have as much cash or extravagance as, say, the Brits or the crop top wearing Thai king.

Fred spent a semester at Harvard back in the day and I don’t think anyone recognized him. I’d see him at bars in Copenhagen and you could barely even pick out his security. Nothing like the brits.

edit; sounds like it's a combo platter. A bit of covid, a hell of a lot of influenza, and probably RSV and pneumonia (though they don't mention those by name).

edit 2: my wife just informed me that Australia had a horrible flu season too. Which is usually predictive of our flu season.

A German anti-immigrant, pro-social safety net, populist political movement allied to international reactionary regimes.

It's not bizarre at all, it's a classic: cradle to grave welfare, but only for people who look "deserving." One of the Greatest Hits of Populism is an equal hatred of both the rich and the immigrant. American Populism's obsession with the economic myth of bootstrap individualism is a weird anomaly. Most Populists want to burn down the Mansions right after they throw the Jew down the well.

This was inevitable and their platform will certainly gain some traction with older folks in the former GDR's steel towns. The old "Sure, we were constantly surveilled and brutally repressed by the Stasi, but at least everyone had a roof and a bowl of solyanka" logic.

You can still find those people in Berlin. I did a paper on them while in school there

but I think many European countries are ripe for parties that are left leaning on some issues and then going hard on anti immigration.

Yeah, at least Germany's economy isn't forever destroyed. The one I'd watch out for is the UK. They're getting more and more desperate as their economy gets more and more isolated.

They recently banned foreign grad students and faculty from bringing family members over. Like... YIKES.

They can still bring spouses right? I thought that was to prevent them dragging mum, dad, granny, etc. Canada has also been dealing with this

I’m not only worried about the UK. Sweden, Netherlands, Denmark to me are just as likely.
