Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

Hey Wally one thing we all should have learned during the Walsh years is a Hockey East regular season banner means squat! Look how few regular season titles Maine has compared to BU, BC, and UNH. Maine Hockey is about winning championships! Why should I set the bar high for the regular season?

All I am saying is we'll be stronger in Hockey East than last year, and we'll make the tournament. That is what we should expect each year and we have had a 3 year hiatus. In the future I expect us to be back among the top 4 in the league and in the tournament 75% of the time. I think those are realistic expectations for Maine Hockey!
I agree HE means squat other than getting into the NCAAs but they should have been in 3rd this year and I expect some improvement over that. Anything lower than 2nd will be a disappointment and anything but the championship game in the tourney will also be a disappointment. Anything lower than a 2 seed in the NCAAs will be a disappointment also. I saw improvement this year and I expect to see it next year

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

Do you believe if that happens he will be back in Orono next August?

First they'll be the ticker tape parade for Gustav in downtown Detroit for winning the Hobey, then the Wings will announce that they'll allow him to further develop under the tutelage of Timmay, then Nyquist will repeat as Hobey in 2011 while leading the Bearz to their third NC and at some point in the future, be elected governor of California. Oh, I forgot he will marry Miss Arizona when he turns 25.

Seriously, if (when) he wins, I think Detroit will say "good job, see ya at the end of next season". Detroits on a tear right now......they dont require his skills for this playoff run.

Jeez Wally, do you WANT to be disappointed or what? :p Are you telling me if they finish third in HE, lose in the semis at the Garden, get a 3 seed in a regional, and win the National Championship you would be disappointed? All that other stuff is just a means to an end as far as I'm concerned. Get in the tourney, win four games, and I'm a happy man.

I was told not to set goals that were too far fetched. Winning an NC after the last 3 seasons seems out there to me but you go with that if you want:p

Oh, I see what you've done. :p Fair enough. If they make it to St. Paul after finishing third in HE, lose in the semi's in Boston, I'm still happy. Obviously not AS happy, but still happy. But I honestly feel they have a shot next year. If they have decent goaltending.

Decent goaltending is a big if right now. I don't see anyone on the team that delivers it right now.Its possible Darling can, but..... lots of questions there. Sirman, I doubt it. A new guy, like to see it, seems kind of late for that now but its possible. Offense, no question if an NC was won on that alone, good shot. Defense, weak link this season, like to see them get stronger and more physical but not sure the coach wants that? I think the D will improve next season. I'm entering the lottery for St Paul FF tickets so:D

Yeah, I'm going next year too. I'm gonna watch tv this year after 11 straight live ones.

I was very disappointed in 1999. After missing the NCAAs for three seasons, the team didn't win the regular season, or the tournament; and got a #3 seed in the national tournament.

Very disappointing.

He wasn't even named conference Player of the Year, and the guy who won it played for a team that actually made the tourney and is also one of the 3 finalists and you're THAT confident Gus is going to get it?

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

Dekastrozza has played his first professional game and he assisted on a goal.

Gregg Johnson scored the goal... not sure if he played college hockey,
If Gregg DID play college hockey it could not have been for a team that mattered.
Keith Johnson followed his brother's goal by scoring a goal of his own.

Guessing that was a joke, but he played for BU. Younger brother Nick just finished up at Sacred Heart.

Maine hasn't won a championship in over 10 years. BC and BU have. I odn't really care much about a regular season title, but there is a problem when a team has the talent to compete for a regular season title but has a mid season slump or chokes down the stretch.

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

I like that Nyquist keeps stating the following:

Nyquist, a fourth-round draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings, said he expects to return the Maine because he and his teammates have some “unfinished business.”

From today's BDN article.

Absolutely. Nyquist has that certain Hobey look about him. Besides, the committee must prove that they don't hold a bias against European players winning the Hobey. Keep in mind, this is about the best college hockey player this season regardless of age, class, ethnicity, country of origin, or team. Just look at his numbers....that says it all. No one even close to his output.

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

KIA not sure what math system you use, but 3.91gpg and 3.88gpg are drastically different than 5 gpg. Closer to wrong than right on this one.

I hear what you are trying to say, it did seem like in the 2003-2004 sesason that the team played a little different with each goalie.

Wow........has it really been 11 years?.........

Comparing stats of the three, one thing that jumps out at me is that Geoffrion spent a LOT more time in the box than Butler or Nyquist. I wish there was a stat for penalties DRAWN, so you could easily see how much damage Gustav did in that regard, enabling the #1 PP in the nation to get on the ice.

Good points. And as much as I think Nyquist derserves to win the Hobey and should win it, you can't ignore the committee's bias toward seniors. Or that his dad played in the NHL and his grandfather is an NHL legend...college hockey needs all the ties to the NHL it can get right now. And Geoffrion's the only one still playing. And he's from Tennessee. Tennessee fer chrissakes! Lots of storylines in Geoffrion that the press can latch onto.

To be fair a three seed in 1999 doesn't equate with a 3 seed today. 12 team bracket and all.
