I'm not going to answer for Oliver Stone, but out of respect for the possibility that you went to Vietnam I'm going to defer on this subject except to say that most of that happened 50 years ago so perhaps there's more relevant and up to date stuff going on in 2013 to concentrate on.

Regarding Nixon though, you're fair game. Richard Nixon should have gone to f ucking jail. Anybody who doesn't agree with that is clueless. Who was on those tapes instructing the CIA to interfere with the FBI? Rich Little? Not only is the man a laughingstock, he was also a bigot (recall his comments about the Jews) and corrupt to the core.

But you do bring up something interesting which is conservatism nowadays is influenced by the paranoia of Nixon instead of the optimism of Reagan. Don't know you personally but your message board persona sure fits that. Nixon got what he deserved which is to be a historical disgrace. Admit that and move on.

It's interesting: you proclaim some matters as being too far in the past to discuss. Yet, other matters from the same time frame, are fit topics. I wonder what accounts for that? Your name calling and derogation: "old man," "settle down," "chill pill" "anger management" "opie" and all the rest, mean only that we can add "unserious child" to your c.v. Mouthy, superficial, bull sh*t artist and unserious child.

Opie you're losing it. I was happy to drop the discussion of 50 year old events but then you had a hissy fit so I responded in kind. Should we cover the 100 years war too?

I'm sorry if your side lost, but you ought to be used to it by now. Your ideology is for dinosaurs, you lost the culture wars and your political heroes are corrupt to the core. If that angers you stop voting for them.

Putting my flame war with OP aside for a minute, I'm wondering why the GOP doesn't come back with a sequester deal like this:

Offer up gimmicky tax cuts that represent the low hanging fruit. For example, oil industry tax breaks, AG tax breaks, and carried interest. I believe oil tax breaks are about 5Bn a year for example. Given that The Boner originally offered to tighten up the tax code in lieu of raising the top rates he must have already identified what he's willing to get rid of. Essentually these things are pork by another name.

If they can come up with 85Bn over 10 years time, they could agree to a deal whereby they exchange an easing of the first two years of the sequester (85Bn a year) by cutting the spending reductions in half in exchange for 10 years of tax loophole closings. This has several advantages. First, they should stay in the good graces of Teabaggers who presumably aren't big fans of some of this crap in the tax code that benefits special interests. Next, you keep the defense industry congresspeople happy by cutting in half what they have to come up with for the first two years anyway. Finally you don't walk back any of the deficit reduction but put the next decision date after the next election where if you're a Republican and you expect to do well in the mid-terms you might be expecting to be in a stronger position then. It would also reframe the issue which they're currently getting killed on and paint them as willing to be reasonable. I don't see a big downside here.

If they can't cut 3% responsibly they can't cut any percent responsibly. Let's face it, the private sector has checked out and the government is now running the economy. Trillions of dollars still sit on the sidelines waiting to be invested in China and other places. The Titanic (US) has hit the iceburg, the ship is going down.

Personally I'm fine with the sequester going through. I somewhat doubt it'll survive in its present condition although any action would happen after it goes into effect at this point unless a deal is already in place.

So, once it does the US would have achieved about 4T in deficit reduction. That's not too shabby.

You know, when the link was to a Michael Savage website, I didn't even bother. ;)

With my flame war with Opie, I was trying to post a link not to a blog but to a more mainstream source like wikepedia. I shouldn't have wasted my time.
