That was better...

Question for the week (weak?): Salty or 'Tek?

Re: The 2011 Boston Red Sox: This Space for Rent

Beckett has looked great so far this season and is something to build on. Im assuming Sunday's game will be rained out, so Lester, who was supposed to go tomorrow will probably be moved to Monday morning, instead of Dice-K. Which, is just postponing the inevitable, Dice-Ks last start for awhile.

Sunday's game will be played under mostly sunny skies with a brisk wind blowing out to right. The rain has already ended.

Re: The 2011 Boston Red Sox: This Space for Rent

Thanks to baseball-reference.com for this nugget:

The 2007 Phillies started 4-11 and still won the NL East with a record of 89-73
The 2001 A's started 4-11 and ended up winning the wild card with a record of 102-60

All is not lost for the Sox just yet.

"Brisk" is one way to describe it.

Re: The 2011 Boston Red Sox: This Space for Rent

Yes, it is. And I'll change that forecast to partly sunny. The clouds may not clear out completely until this evening.

Went to the game yesterday. Before the game, Dunkin's Donuts was doing a lot of business, and they were selling hot chocolate and clam chowder in the stands. Of course, the hot chocolate was in a souvenir cup and cost $7.

but it was very good, wasn't it?!? ;)

Re: The 2011 Boston Red Sox: This Space for Rent

Just fired up MLB.tv and noticed that the game is on actual tv:TBSHD. Nice.:)

I'm still optimistic, because I'm stupid.

At some point, if Boston's going to scratch their way back to .500, and then back into contention, they're going to have to put consecutive wins together. Might as well be today, with Lester on the mound (though his opponent is no slouch).

Drop the p...err... play ball

Re: The 2011 Boston Red Sox: This Space for Rent

It's funny to watch Ellsbury and Crawford hitting back-to-back. Someone needs to take Crawford out for a night on the town. Guy is definitely pressing.

Triple post...

Looks like Francona had a different answer to joecct. He's probably right. If Varitek does handle pitchers better than Salty (he obviously has more experience), there's noone in the Red Sox organization who could use that extra help more than Matsuzaka.

Random question: anyone know if his family has been affected by the quake/tsunami/radioactive leak? I'm not usually one to make excuses for pro athletes, but I could hardly blame Matsuzaka if he were distracted to start the season.

Good question. I haven't read anything about it.

Sox currently up 9-0. Maybe they should change the start time for the rest of the games this season to 11am. Leave it to me to go to the one game this series that Jed Lowrie does not play. That kid is en fuego! Good to see.

Re: The 2011 Boston Red Sox: This Space for Rent

As of a few days after the quake, he'd verfied the safety of his family, except his grandmother, who lives in Aomori. Aomori is about as far north of Sendai (the major city most affected by the quake and tsunami) as Tokyo is south. It's inland and I believe in the mountains, so it's likely that the problem in contacting her was more due to infrastrucure and communications problems than any real danger.

He donated $1 million to the relief effort, a big amount, even by professional athletes' standards.

And whatever was bothering him evidently wasn't today. :)

Re: The 2011 Boston Red Sox: This Space for Rent

Lowrie 4-5 today. Another home run and 4 RBIs. Scutero is going to have to sit a little more it appears.

Crawford got a hit today, going 1-5. Its a step in the right direction I guess?

Re: The 2011 Boston Red Sox: This Space for Rent

Quite a game. 3 baserunners for Toronto.

Great pitching, great hitting. Complete performance.

Re: The 2011 Boston Red Sox: This Space for Rent

Who knows -- maybe it was just a really bad start the other day. Hopefully he's able to hang on to the control that he discovered today.
Based on a couple of Dice quotes I saw today, I think he knew it was pitch good or be pitched.

Well it's Easter / Passover season, and a paraphrased quote from Ben Hur seems appropriate:
We keep you alive to serve this team. Pitch well and live.

Plans for Fenway's 100th

In honor of Fenway Park's upcoming 100th anniversary in 2012, the Boston Red Sox revealed the first phase of their plans to honor the milestone at a press conference on Wednesday morning. On the 99th anniversary of the Red Sox's first game at Fenway Park, the club launched a new website, fenwaypark100.com, that details the history of Fenway Park and the upcoming plans to honor the baseball landmark.

Fans can view year-by-year photos of the historic park as well as watch more than 30 videos highlighting historic Fenway monuments such as the Green Monster, Pesky's Pole, the lone red seat and the Monster seats. Fans can also help the Red Sox plan the anniversary celebration by sharing their experiences and ideas on the website.

Also starting April 28, the Red Sox will begin the Fenway Park 100th Anniversary Brick Program. Fans can have their personal messages engraved onto a brick that will be placed in the area of the concourse spanning from Gate B to Gate A. Bricks come in two sizes: 4x8 for $250 and 8x8 for $450 and fans also will receive a complimentary replica brick with a custom case.
