The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

I think there isn't much drop off in the 3rd/4th lines as far as being able to score against a team like China. Because of Lawler's injury, they didn't even have 4 full lines, so they'd have to do some juggling. Also, I think Russia is quite a bit stronger than China.

Beware the Russians. Having coached in International play against them I can tell you that they hate the Canadians and Americans when it comes to hockey. They are trained from a young age to be like this and will stop at nothing to beat us. Matches on both the Men's and Women's side are a must watch and line brawls are not out of the question!

Is the young lady who disqualified Duluth playing for Russia?

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Back in 2005 when the IOC voted out softball there were a couple of posts on this forum worth repeating:

Every Olympics there's always a couple sports columnists who get annoyed they have to cover a 10-0 US/Canada win and end up using their scarce inches to advocate the sport's removal from the Olympics. I forget whether they actually find IOC officials to agree with them, though as PrincetonFan suggested, I doubt such a movement would gain momentum for gender equity reasons. There aren't many true team sports in the winter olympics, so women's hockey's removal would take out a considerable chunk of female participation.
There is a difference between an Olympic sport, which is voted on by all IOC members (not just those with Winter Olympic sports) and a discipline and event which is the responsibility of the Executive Board. I'm quite sure that women's hockey is considered an event in the sport of ice hockey and will not be subject to a direct vote as softball was.

Nevertheless, the women’s game will not help ice hockey with evaluation criteria such as popularity based on press coverage, TV ratings, spectator attendance or worldwide competitiveness, where it fails miserably. Fortunately, the IOC 's evaluation criteria, in addition to these, appear to give considerable weight to participation in World Championships and Olympic qualification. With five divisions of World Championships involving 30 teams from five continents, and an additional 8 countries that participated in Olympic qualification tournaments, the IIHF will be able to report broad geographic participation for women’s ice hockey.

Gender equity is also one of the evaluated categories but I'm not sure how the results are interpreted. Is poor gender equity a reason to eliminate a sport as a punishment to its federation or keep the sport to support the minority gender? What will be evident in the gender comparison will be the lack of a Junior World Championship for women.

The bottom line, as I see it, is that women’s hockey cannot be eliminated by the same evaluation and vote that was softball’s demise without men’s hockey going too. And that’s not about to happen. Let’s hope that the IOC Executive Board is pleased enough with IIHF’s report to the IOC Session to not take it upon itself to eliminate women’s ice hockey as an event. Perhaps it’s time for the IIHF to start a U18 or U20 World Championship.

IMO, Slovakia making it to the Olympics for the first time, regardless of the score, is evidence of the IIHF doing what needs to be done to keep women’s hockey in the Olympics.

The Canadians in attendance gave the Slovakians a nice ovation after the game.

The player pool tells the story:

USA - 60,000 female players - China, less than 200.

Miracle it wasn't worse.

Is the young lady who disqualified Duluth playing for Russia?
Yes. Iya Gavrilova is#8. Is full-time student@UMD majoring in accounting. Plans to be back after Olympics. Played on a UMD men's intramural hockey team this fall. Watched the game last night. Other than the 1st few minutes of the 1st period, the Russians couldn't keep up with the Finns. Lost most the races to the puck.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Does anyone know if the Sweden/Slovakia game is being webcast today? We have friends on both teams and would love to watch the game. Thanks for your help!

[The Russians] are trained from a young age to be like this and will stop at nothing to beat us.
Nothing, except the vast, vast talent gap.
That's how we roll....
Coincidentally, this is also how you roll:

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

I don't believe that she did anything wrong; the fault lies elsewhere.
I'm not saying she did. I just feel like the novelty of getting wrecked by an Olympic athlete would wear off in short order when I can't even keep the puck for 3 seconds before she takes it and scores.

Hey Tony or Grant or whatever your name is that's bull**** and I'm really offended...Like really ****ed.

The least you could have done is point out to your readers that the emblem at center ice has a big C with an H in it. Don't make the mistake of painting all Canadians (not Canadiens) with the same broad brush.

Your an idiot!

I'm pretty sure you can watch just about ANY Olympic event online on the Canadian media network. Check out:

lol.

They're from Canada and they're at a sporting event. I didn't realize your characterization of Canadians as uber-classy in regards to hockey ONLY applied to national team games.

Although I do understand why you'd be bothered by that example, to be honest. Montreal fans are weird. It's like judging the US by Philadelphia.
