The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Sure. Happy that you shared it.

But I hope you have read my post and realized why the argument this piece makes (at one point saying softball was discarded simply because of blowouts) is complete utter nonsense, and it's an embarrassment that the Globe publishes this illogical trash.

i remember the announcers saying yesterday that of the 1+ billion people in china they had 122 registered hockey players. Once that changes...and goes up to say 10,000 by the next olympics, and with the chinese dedication to excellence...one would hope that they can become a player on the national stage. It's just going to take time for these other countries to catch up.

Remember before women's hockey was a real sport in US/Canada the girls were playing with the boys...I doubt this happens a whole lot in these other countries

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

So you can state unequivocally that it didn`t happen...or are you basing your argument on the fact that it shouldn`t have happened.
I wasn't there. You weren't. Wickenheiser wasn't. But all of the quotes I've seen from people who were indicate that it did not happen. Could Wickenheiser state unequivocally that it did happen at the time she ran her mouth on camera, or am I being held to a higher standard?

Can you state unequivocally that the Canadians did not burn an American flag in the Olympic Village last night? I heard it from someone who heard it from someone who heard it from someone...

The guy who sold me those "stealth" tanks said they were totally undetectable by radar, satellite, or USCHO posters.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

I can see the next step with the Chinese - lacking an internal mechanism for developing highly competitive players, they will start sending the to college over here to play hockey.

I wonder how many college coaches were watching that game and thinking, geez a new place to recruit?

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

While the blowouts suck, let's not forget that blowouts aren't just a women's hockey problem.

Take a look at some of the scores from World Junior men's games this year - considered by many (especially in Canuckistan) to be one of the best and most important hockey tournaments of the year.

Canada 15, Latvia 0... .
US 12, Latvia 1....
Canada 8, Slovakia 2....
Sweden 10, Czech Republic 1....
Finland 10, Austria 1

There were only like two competitive games in the entire round robin phase of the tournament, and even the medal rounds had some blowouts: the US pasted Finland in the quarterfinals, and Sweden destroyed Switzerland 11-4 for the Bronze.

Blowouts unfortunately are pretty common in international hockey competition, even at the very highest, most elite level. I bet you'll see them on the men's side too when Russia and Canada get rolling.

I think the problem is that while countries like Sweden and Finland are improving, the US and Canada are improving at an even faster rate. The weight training, facilities and resources for women's hockey absolutely blow away what they must have been in 1998 when there wasn't even a Division 1 NCAA championship yet.

No disrespect intended to the pioneers and the great players who won gold for the US in '98, but if you look at the speed, srength and skill of players like the Lamoreauxs and Duggan and Lawler, it's just miles ahead of what we've seen in the past.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Really..that wouldn`t surprise any of us up here.... :(
That I can understand; the US has done enough goofy things over the years that can make the global community mistrust us. Still, I think you folks were out of line in that US flag burning by Canadians in the Olympic Village last night that Joe is reporting.:p

I don't think that is true. As we are seeing in NCAA hockey, the bottom teams have more room to improve, so they start to close the gap, no matter how slowly. Finland and Sweden are now capable of beating the US. I don't think that was as true in 2002.

How do you know it was the Canadians...by all accounts (even yours) it could have been any number of International countries.

Cookie said it was.:D

EDIT: And yeah, I'm done highjacking this thread. Back to actual hockey rather than urban legends as far as I'm concerned.

Agree to disagree, ARM. Granted, I was only a wee lad watching the games in '98 and '02, but from what I can see the skating and skill now is miles (or kilometers for our World Junior runner-up Canadian friends) ahead of where it was then... while Sweden and Finland are now capable of beating the US on a good day, I think the US and Canada are even more equipped to epically smack the crap out of a lower-table (but still good) team than they were ten years ago.

I have a feeling that if the second set of games gets ugly, the US and Canada will each call off the dogs.

The report I read quoted Darwitz as saying (despite scoring four in the 3rd) the Americans took their foot off the gas against the Chinese.

BTW dont forget to throw us under the bus on your U17 win as well. Might as well get it over with.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

It seemed like they were coasting... I mean, I'm sure they could have poured in 20 if they wanted to. But I think you'll see them go to the 3rd string goalie and double-shift the third and fourth lines even more often next time.

I didn't see any of the U-17 tournament although I was glad to see that the US won. Tough to judge anything when the Canada team is broken down by provinces.

Totally apropos of nothing, but wouldn't it be REALLY interesting to see a tournament w/ NHL players where French Canada and Anglo Canada have separate teams?

I think there isn't much drop off in the 3rd/4th lines as far as being able to score against a team like China. Because of Lawler's injury, they didn't even have 4 full lines, so they'd have to do some juggling. Also, I think Russia is quite a bit stronger than China.

Judging from the beating I'm taking over on the running up the score thread I can only hope the Canadian Women do the same.

If you didn't see the U17 final between the US and Ontario...you missed a beauty. Great Hockey and a pleasure to watch. Our boys were wearing the Maple Leaf however and were therfore expected to win.

I can assure you if the Western Provinces continue to have to send transfer payments to the Province of Quebec the day will come when La Belle Province will be in need of their own hockey team. As well as their own currency, army, constitution and so on...

I'd enjoy seeing that. Talk a good game, eh? Time to sink or swim, MFers. :p
