The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Update on Erika Lawler, she expects to play Tuesday against Finland.

That's great news. After going into the boards that hard, I couldn't believe she even got up. What a gutsy player she is.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

There's a first..when I click on it advises me that the broadcast is only available to viewers in the U.S and Puerto Rico.

Bet those Puerto Rican`s are clammering over each other to get to this video...

This Canuck did get to watch in at a rink in the US. It was a beaut.

P.S...5-4...Will give you a full report when I return home. Scores don't tell the whole story.

I have only seen her take a couple of hits harder than this one. One was when she flew head over heals into the boards where she deflected off the goalpost. The other was during her first worlds where she was crushed into the boards by Karoliina Rantamäki.

Not to mention her injury in Minney where Anne Schepler fell on her and crushed her shoulder against the ice.

Both times she was more mad then hurt. This time she actually looked hurt and had a look of concern on her face as the trainers worked on her.

Its being able to come back from things like this that make her the player she is.

Her goal was beautiful, that is the only way to describe it

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Tikkinen playing for Finland and a Minnesota State player is having one heck of a hockey game tonight.

The Puerto Rican's may get it but it does not work in the US with a number of Mac's. It requires MS Silverlight which wont work with Mac OS X 10.4.1 on my lap top or with the Ubuntu system on my desktop (@#$%^ MICROSOFT!!!!)

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

I didn't mean that in a Canada vs. US sense.... Today's US result makes me equally sad for the same reason. All the money and time spent to train and prepare, only to obliterate your opponent in a rout seems like a complete waste of time and money.

I'm excited and hopeful to see the US and Canada ultimately meet, but....to call it a tournament and have only two truly competitive teams just doesn't make sense. And so, if that should become the viewpoint of the IOC, I'd have to say...I get it!

You're probably right, but still, it would be so much better to see several other countries catch up and really challenge.

There are other decent teams.

Sweden beat the US in Torino and Switzerland isn't awful. Finland is pretty good too.

Yes the US and Canada are the two heavyweights but didn't 1980 teach you anything?;)

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

I tried to get NBC's online broadcast through Mediacom.. but using the log-in information it asked for. .I couldn't gain access..

As much as it pained me, I installed Silverlight on the Mac. It worked, mostly. Enough so I could get some hockey fix. The sacrifices I make....

Give it a shot, you can always uninstall. There's some work-arounds in the works out there on the web bust just do it and you'll be a happier fan for the next couple weeks.

How many of the WCHA schools have some connection to the women's Olympic hockey players? MSU-Mankato does; OSU has a D on Canada, US, and a couple players for Finland; Wisconsin has 7 on the US and 2 that I can think of for Canada; UMD has more than I want to try to list at this late hour; Bemidji has Tomcikova; UND's got the Lams; and the Gophs have Räty and two on the US. Is SCSU the only one that doesn't have a representative, or am I forgetting somebody?

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

I enjoyed watching Finland V Russia last night...after watching Canada and the US drub their apponents it was great to see a hockey game that was somewhat close for more than four minutes. It was fun to see Nora in the goal, but I do wish she was wearing maroon and gold next weekend. Any predictions for the second set of prelim games? Will there be a game to watch that will be guaranteed close?

Canada
USA
Sweden
Finland

No.

Best chance and I think it is only a slim chance is Finland v. China. China could hang around until their five skaters get gassed and then Finland with its superior ability and depth should become dominant.

Canada could win by 10 or more goals again.

USA could win by 10 or more goals again.

Slovakia could lose by 10 or more goals again.

These are just my opinions. I could be wrong.

I thought Finland looked very good, even though they weren't able to establish clear dominance until Russia began to lose their energy.

I think the Finland-USA on Thursday could be a lot more exciting than most of us US fans are hoping for. The US team will need to be firing on all cylinders, because with Raty in goal at the other end you just never know.

Not to totally overlook them, but I don't think Russia has enough talent and depth to give the US much of a contest on Tuesday. Their goalie will need to be Raty x 3 for them to have much of a chance.

It is tough to establish dominance when on the PK half the time. Unless you are Canada playing Solvakia, then 4-on-5 would make for an at least slightly watchable game.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Boston Globe Article - Future Uncertain??

I guess I wasn't alone in my sentiments after watching the first couple of games. Maybe it's only we in Boston who see it this way? I sincerely had no intention of harping on the subject, but since the Boston Globe published this article today, I thought it appropriate to share with the rest of you.

I agree with all of this. From what I've watched so far, I don't think Finland or Sweden are pushovers for any opponent in this tourney...well, not Team USA anyway.

Have to admire the Chinese...getting a spanking as they did but playing their hearts out throughout. Has to be frustrating from a fairly early point in the contest...yet no chippiness. Maybe the Chinese don't know what Chippy play is.

Thoughts on officiating thus far?
