The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Thoughts on officiating thus far?
It hasn't been attrocious, but I think some have erred on the side of calling too much. With teams playing a max of 5 games, a penalty here or there can be a huge deal. Officiate with restraint. And as I've stated before, if you blow a play dead, don't allow a goal that results from a subsequent steal of the puck.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

I agree with all of this. From what I've watched so far, I don't think Finland or Sweden are pushovers for any opponent in this tourney...well, not Team USA anyway.

Have to admire the Chinese...getting a spanking as they did but playing their hearts out throughout. Has to be frustrating from a fairly early point in the contest...yet no chippiness. Maybe the Chinese don't know what Chippy play is.

Thoughts on officiating thus far?

For the lower (beginner) teams like China and Slovakia, playing against (and getting pounded by) the US or Canadians is the highlight game of their season. It is comparable to the basketball teams playing against the "Dream Team" from a few years ago. Get embarrassed by Michael Jordan, then ask for an autograph after the game.

I find it amazing that they're able to field as good of a team as they do, with less than 200 registered players in the whole country. With a population of a billion people, just think how much better they could be.

I've only watched the two games that were played yesterday, but from what I could tell on TV (where you don't see everything that's going on away from the play) it seemed pretty good to me. I did like the fact that they weren't afraid to call several in a row on the same team, as opposed to looking for "opportunities" to even it up.

IIHF officiating historicaly has been dismal at best. It seems the deeper into the tournament one gets the worse the calls get.

I harken back to the Peaks Ice Arena in Provost Utah in the 2002 Winter Olympic gold medal game where the American ref called 13 penalties against Canada to the US 4. It was laughable. The Canadians despite the lopsided penalty calls went on to win 3-2 and won their first gold medal in Olympic Womens Hockey history.

The turning point in this game was Katie King et al. deciding it would be a good idea to throw the Canadian flag on their `locker room`floor and step on it with their skates. The Canadians found out and well...the rest is history.

This again...It's been established it didn't happen IIRC.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Thanks for the article...a team member of UNH, Angela Taylor was the captain for the women's Great Britain team, for their last world championships, and the way she explained it was as AJ was discussng during the Canada game...if they win their way into the higher pool to play in the Olympics, that's their reward. AJ was saying that when Slovakia played Bulgaria to get into the Olympics, SLOVAKIA won 77-0!! 39 goals on 39 shots! Talk about competitive....but Wickenhouser's point is well taken. The men's basketball Olympic competition was similar 10 years ago... and I still go back to what Joe Bertagna said at the Fenway games this year, that women's hockey is where the men's game was 30 years ago...and think about it, if you were to coach PeeWee's, wouldn't it be better to bring them to a women's game so they could learn technique over brute force?

The U.S.A. won gold in Nagano in 1998.

It`s folklore then...true or not it re-energized the Canadian team and Thanks to the CBC interview with Wick between periods of that game, a nation.
Or not. Truth is...it was most likely a fabrication from within the Canadian lockeroom. Classy route to motivation.

Well when your getting out penalized 13 to 4 in an American rink with an American ref ...all bets are off. A dark, dark day for American officiating.

Boston Globe Article - Future Uncertain??

I guess I wasn't alone in my sentiments after watching the first couple of games. Maybe it's only we in Boston who see it this way? I sincerely had no intention of harping on the subject, but since the Boston Globe published this article today, I thought it appropriate to share with the rest of you.

It's written by Kevin Paul Dupont, so I wouldn't be too worried. When Powers starts writing stuff like this, then you worry.

The really troubling part is that it is precious inches wasted on negativity rather than being a celebration (by the Globe) of the locals (Bellamy, Duggan, Lawler, Schaus, and Thatcher) and what they have gone through and accomplished to get to Olympus. Again, typical of Dupont, and the Globe.

Have you ever looked at the scores from men's hockey when it first became an Olympic sport??

Be patient the women's game is improving all the time and it will have to grow without the boost that men's hockey got from the cold war.

Sure. Happy that you shared it.

But I hope you have read my post and realized why the argument this piece makes (at one point saying softball was discarded simply because of blowouts) is complete utter nonsense, and it's an embarrassment that the Globe publishes this illogical trash.

This was in the aftermath of 9/11, and only the dimmest of bulbs, like Wickenheiser apparently, would put any stock in the tale. With all of the classy players on the Canadian roster, I've always wondered why Hockey Canada has chosen to make her the face of their program.

Wonder why the nation of Canada would be so low on energy that they needed something like that to get them going? Growing up, I always rooted for the Canadian athlete at the Winter Olympics if an American wasn't going to win, and I think that was reflected in media coverage as well. Canada never represented the things that the East Germans or Soviets did. Do Canadians really believe that we have so little respect for Canada that we would stomp on your flag? That's pretty insulting to our players.

There is another way for the sport to grow internationally; immigrants that grow up in the US or Canada playing for their home countries. Did anyone watch the opening ceremony where there was one or two athletes from warm island climates? They were living in the US and competing for their homeland.

So you can state unequivocally that it didn`t happen...or are you basing your argument on the fact that it shouldn`t have happened.
